One of my favs of yours Lesley...I like your fabric choices on this one!

Nettie Phillips 05-04-2011 05:45 PM

That one is pretty also.

Love your fabric on this one, Lesley. Very pretty.

Here's mine

Butterflyspain 05-04-2011 10:35 PM

Ooooh donīt they all look lovely. I love them both and they are so different.

Lacelady 05-05-2011 01:18 AM

This one does lend itself to different coloured petals in all the flowers if you have enough - Love your choices Judy.

Some of mine on this one aren't batiks, they are fusion florals and the fabric seems quite thick after the batiks.

sandpat 05-05-2011 06:58 AM

Lovely Judy! Lesley's is bright and cheery, yours is soothing...incredible..the same block, such different feels from it.

JudyG 05-05-2011 02:21 PM

It is interesting how different the same block looks just because different fabric was used. That's what I'm finding so great about the AOTH. So many people doing the same thing and all of them being individualized.

Here is block 2. I wanted to try to make the whole block form one piece of fabric that has different shades in it, I think it turned out ok.

Why, I would have to agree with you Elle! Now, are those purple centers from that same piece? You did a fabulous job on this one technique wise too...:D:

Butterflyspain 05-13-2011 10:32 PM

No Patti, its not the same fabric, it just needed a bit of zing and the purple did it. Thanks, I THINK I am getting a little better on those points.

sandpat 05-14-2011 05:25 AM

I think your points look great Elle....I've found that I am better or worse depending on the type of fabric I'm using. I'm getting pretty darn good, if I'm using batiks! Regular slightly bulky cottons on the 7" blocks...not so much! But I have been doing this new "sweeping" under of the tip prior to trying to get the point done and that is seeming to help.

I figured the purple wasn't on the same piece...just HAD to mess with ya', you know!!

Butterflyspain 05-14-2011 05:29 AM

Yep and you always catch me out. LOL

I find regular cotton so different to the batik material, I think its harder to work with personally.

sandpat 05-14-2011 05:32 AM

It is to me when doing applique...but sometimes, its the best way to go! I'm learning to be slightly careful about what pieces I'm using it for on the blocks though.

Butterflyspain 05-14-2011 05:34 AM

Donīt think thats a very good pic the colours are much brighter than that. Could be I took it at night.

d.rickman 05-14-2011 01:23 PM

They are all so different, but all very beautiful, can't wait to see all the finished quilts. Great work Ladies.

d.rickman 05-14-2011 01:30 PM

Beautiful.

oh, I just 'got it'...all these pieces were cut from the same piece of fabric. mahvelous dahling! It looks so good and nice idea to keep block coordinated! I love that fabric too!
It amazes me all the combinations ppl come up with, and as we go along and more and more blocks get made and you see a person's "group" of blocks...how nicely they all go together, forming their style. It's awesome.
So individual and unique and all pretty! :-D

well, it LOOKS like it came from the same fabric. Great job on it, Elle!
This is like ice cream and we have all flavors :XD:

Since you mentioned taking pictures, Elle, could you guys give me some pointers on how to take "good" pictures?

Patti, you took some and said your colors were pretty "true" in the pics...what's your secret?
Inside...what was the lighting like? bright, medium, dim
Do you use those regular yellowish light bulbs in your house, or do you have the natural looking ones...swirly bulbs.
I have those.
I think I use too much light sometimes.
I've gotten a piece of black velvet to use for "posing" my blocks on...think that will help.
Do you use flash inside the house?

Think this other camera I have is not as good as the other. This one only has 5.1 pixels and the higher the pixels the better the photo. Yes I use flash havenīt got an option with mine. I am not a good picture taker, I aim and fire LOL

sandpat 05-15-2011 04:50 PM

Mousie, I'm not an expert by any means but I have found that the setting for "scenery- floral" is what makes the best pics for me. To take the best pics, I use daylight from the window or take them outside. The best light is in the AM...not so much of an orangish tint to it. I don't use an external flash. Sometimes I will add some fill light from Picassa when I load them onto the computer too. It just depends. I'm not sure you need to "pose" them on the velvet. For your black background, you might rather use a white sheet.

Patti, what do you mean by "sweeping under the tip"? I am having an enormous problem with my tips so any tip will be appreciated.

sandpat 05-16-2011 07:13 PM

When I'm sewing along, tucking the allowance under with my needle..I will get to the end and all of the allowance is then over to the left side of the tip...Then I take the pointy end and fold it under leaving the tip "flat" (swept under), then I take a toothpick and sweep under the piece to make sure it is smooth, then I pull my thread just a tad to get the point out there, then take a stitch right in the point, then start tucking the allowance under again and start up the other side.

If this was clear as mud...which I'm sure it is...I'll try to take some pics tomorrow to show you.

Roxanne 05-17-2011 03:54 AM

I had read previously about toothpicks and have some on my machine. I'll try this today with the new block. Thanks I hope it helps since I haven't had a leaf or flower petal look right yet!

all great tips, Patti, thanks! I'll try the sheet too...outside.
I love outside pictures! Nature seems to know how to give great lighting.

oh, but that's GOOD mud! I had that idea in my head, but now I have confirmation! and it wasn't my question, lol!

Roxanne! your blocks are lovely and I'm not just soft-soaping ya!
In fact, we are all really hard on ourselves...
not that I've shown anything yet for aoth,
...but I haven't seen anybody cranking out crappy blocks!
You, my dear, have a fabulous eye for color and coordination!

Roxanne 05-18-2011 04:38 AM

Why mousie, Thank You!
I have been using only my scraps so far and didn't intend to buy anything new for this quilt. So far, so good...

Patti---thanks for this tip. I used it last night to start on block 21(?) and I am much happier. I'm still having problems getting the fit right (I'm not using a pattern or template ) so by the time I stitch down one side, I'm sometimes kinda short on the other...I guess it takes practice.

I'm not doing any of the embroidery as I'm saving these to work on when my sisters and I go on vacation next month. They think I'm crazy, but I know I'll need something to do in the evenings or early mornings.

sandpat 05-18-2011 04:52 AM

Rox, I found that when I trace the template on the piece I'm using for the applique AND on the block that I can get it in place better. I stick a pin through a point on the applique piece, then poke the pin through the exact same point on the block..I use at least 2 pins to start with to hold the piece. This helped me tremendously, maybe it will work for you.

Roxanne 05-18-2011 05:02 AM

Patti,
I use pins also to hold my piece on the background on which I have traced the pattern. But, still get some shift in my pieces--not all, but some.

sandpat 05-18-2011 05:08 AM

It didn't work for me just using the pins Rox...I had to draw the shape on the applique piece so that I could pin the exact points together. Things tend to get a little difficult for me sometimes and it seems that I have to do extra steps to make things work. Oh well...LOL

Roxanne 05-18-2011 12:27 PM

Well Patti, I tried this today and think it works a little better! I still think the problem is with the "operator" ya know? Maybe by the time we finish I'll know how to do it.

Mousie 05-18-2011 04:40 PM

I'm a tell you what...it is so fantastic to get all the tips and tricks you guys so generously share, but it also helps me a lot, to know that even the "cream of the crop" quilters have to do some of the quirky things I do!
I love you guys for making me feel a little more normal, lol!
I've always thought I was slower at doing things, bc I seem to have to go the long, hard way around...fussy, just too finicky, I s'pose! :XD:
I played with fabrics earlier and got all the colors stacked,...lots of 'em...now to do the 'weeding'...for me, it's not what I use, it's what I take away, and don't use...that's hard...I want them all!
Once I get one done...I know I'm gonna be eating, sleeping and breathing this stuff...I can feel it coming on! :XD: :XD: :XD: woo hoo!
