Another MYSTERY QUILT Train Ride - our 5th trip!
1 Attachment(s)
Hello and good morning to all! Welcome aboard to new and returning passengers, for our fifth mystery quilt train ride. Today you will get yardage for this project which, hopefully, will appeal to beginners and advance quilters alike. To me, the fun is in trying anticipate the final project. Next clue will be posted on March 9th, and on succeeding Saturdays, by 9:00 MST at the very latest. This time, our journey will last for 4 more weeks and you will have a table runner for the dining room or kitchen, or perhaps that coffee table -- so choose your fabrics accordingly. And with that said -- the only clue I will be giving to what you are doing -- here is what you will need from your stash or at the store.
Four fabrics, labeled A B C D. I would suggest you cut a sample, label it with a letter, tape it to a sheet of paper and keep it handy. (I got confused and ended up remaking a set of blocks because I used the wrong colors.) As you can see from my fabrics I’m getting a jump on the season and am making a Christmas gift. You do not need to do as I did and use all dark fabrics. Just use things you like. A - ½ yard B - ¾ yard C- ¼ yard D - 5/8 yard Looking forward to seeing your fabric selections! Approved by Patrice. |
nifty stash digging again. love your colors Judy
I will be digging through my stash when I get home from taking mom grocery shopping. I have some ideas of what I want to pull from my stash. I like the idea of getting started on the holidays.
Thanks again Judy for your hard work on putting these together. |
You found me, chef, welcome again, hope you enjoy this as much as the last ones.
You're welcome, Create. Glad you are with us again.
Thank you Judy. I am sure I can find this in my stash.
I know you can, Florence!!!
Oooo very doable! I've never made a table runner.
thanks judy
Would you believe that I don't have any Christmas fabrics in my stash? Now I have to go shopping. This mystery will be a perfect gift for my cousin who always goes all out on Christmas decorating.
I am on board again, I have never made a table runner. I am going to look for train rides 1-3. I signed onto the board when train #4 left the station. Thanks Judy.
So nice to see all the familiar faces on board. Mulled cider and donuts in the club car for you to enjoy, and get reacquainted with each other.
Going down my check list making sure I have everything. Rotary cutter, mat, pins, scissors, thread, featherweight in the case, check....now choose fabric. Suitcase is already packed. I'll be ready to jump on board. I don't even care where the train is going, I'm along for the beautiful ride and scenery.
Well, here I am again. I love these train rides! Thanks, Judy.
Looks fun, ideas for fabric are spinning in my brain, but that will be tomarrow....today I will be holding my greatgrandaughter in just a few more minutes.......first time this year......she will be 8 mo. tomarrow car is parking now. Bye, And Judy thank you !!!!!!!!
Here we go! My bags and my 301 are packed, I just need to choose fabrics. I have been making Spicy Spirals for my children, but have no quilted table runner for me, so I will choose dining room colors. Will it work in softer colors?

Judy, here are the fabrics that I chose. I have enough of each that if you think I should move one to a different spot it will work. Or change?
I have my ticket, I was just thinking about trying to do a table runner! Now I have a great reason, on the to club car for cider I may skip the donuts. By the way did the hot tub get installed yet?
Yeah I am so excited woke up to find that this thread had been started this made my day. Thank you again Judy for making this all happen. Looks like it make me a smaller quilt and I am all in for that as I did not want to miss it but have so many bigger projects that weigh me down right now. Nice to have something to break up having to work on something double to king size:thumbup:
Oh Drats!! I have A, but will probably have to go shopping for D and possibly C. Yippee!! I have a shopping trip scheduled for Tuesday and a UFO Day on Wednesday, so I will hop the train on Thursday.
I must make a confession --I have not even finished #3 mystery quilt… I take it with me to sew days thinking I will get it worked on…Why? you ask I have not finished it?….Well I messed up on my 9 patches and need to redo them…and I do not have any extra fabric to remake….It will get done…I promises.
Now for this one…I see it as doable and I can make it for my sister as she likes table runners. I got my ticket for this ride and will be there in the club car with some sweets. :) |
Oh that sounds great. I think I will make mine in spring colours . This will be my first train ride so I am very excited. THis can be my saturday evening project for the next month. Will shop my stash this evening and pack my bags tomorrow.
Jan |
I have never done a mystry quilt. Will give a table runner a try. Need to use up some of my stash, will watch for more post.
I have so much going on right now, I am just going to watch this ride. Maybe later I will find the time to do. As I have looked thru the old rides, I have seen some amazing quilts.
At first I thought JUST a table runner????? But you know what? They DO make great gifts and I just might make one to match the quilt made in the last train trip so that it can be used as a bureau scarf along side the quilt. So .....YA, I'm jumping on board! Now, off to the stash piles......
My 3rd mystery.Get ready,sit,sew!!!!!!
Florence, you fabrics will be perfect, and knowing your tastes, I think you will be happy with the order you have them in.
And so glad to see so many of you are already on board for this new mystery. Paulswalia, love the idea for a dresser scarf to match the quilt! And there is no rule that you need to finish an old mystery before beginning a new one! So just dig in and go for it! |
I'm so ready to jump on board. I will pick out my fabric later this week and group everything together for next week. I'm so excited. See everyone at the train station next week, Bye for now.
Oh dear.....I have no use for a table runner and don't really care to make one. Trying to think if I know of anyone else who does so I could make it as a gift. If not then I will be the cheer leader up in the food car.....lol I was going to say the observation car but I would get so distracted by the scenery I would forget why I was there. Although picking the food car may not be a good idea either......although I could sample everything before everyone else and let you know which one is the best.
I'm jumping on the caboose as it pulls out of my station. I like the idea of holiday too, so am thinking of 4th of July, red, white and blue. Fourth color ???, maybe another shade of one of the others. Or maybe a total neutral like gray or black? Or silver for pizzazz? Have to go shopping.
Judy, this really is a mystery because the instructions before have included what fabrics have to go with others for contrast or matching. This time, no. That's very very interesting. :) I too have yet to finish the scrappy but don't want to miss the beginning of this trip. |
I also have no where to use a table runner .... but, I'm game to try this out anyway and maybe I'll have a gift to "stash" away for that unexpected housewarming or something. Off to my "cat-cave" to see what fabric combo I can come up with!
Thanks Judy for taking us all on another ride! |
I'm in--haven't participated in any event on this board yet, so it's time to take the plunge with a smaller project. I'm going with 4th of July--red, white, blut and gold. I'll post a pic later this week. Ready to get on that train--I love to travel :)
Oh JUDY, here we go again & I am so ready!! :D I love your idea of a Christmas gift for the end of this year. It is always so nice to be ahead of the game. For me, I can always make table runners for either myself or my grown children & their families. Now I must go digging through my stash. Thank you so much.
:D :D :D :D |
Think I'll try an Easter/Spring theme. Or maybe Halloween...I have loads of Halloween fabric. Or maybe both
*squeeeee* I've been waiting and WAITING for this. lol. Thanks Judy, me luvs trains.
I've never made a table runner either, so here is a new one for me. I think I'm going to go with some muted colors for the kitchen table. Hm. Although I do like the idea of the red, white and blue...decisions, decisions. Oh and I'm bringing some Riesling for the sweet foods in the club car :) |
I'm also thinking it's a good idea to get a head start on Christmas. Can't start today but maybe tomorrow. I'm so anxious to see what Judy has in store for us this time!
I'm busy packing ready for this train ride, I so enjoyed the last one. Judy you must have known I have just redecorated my dining room and was thinking a table runner would finish it off perfectly. Going to have a look at my stash, I have lots of fat quarters would they be suitable or does the fabric need to be WOF? Will leave some of my triple chocolate brownies and some nice English Breakfast tea in the club car.

Ok, I need help on this one with colors. I like the first four, but...something is missing. I like some of the second four pieces, but not all.
Two views of 1-4. Two views of 5-8. The greens can be used on either side, one side has the strong pattern, the other has a light showing of it through the green. |
Wheeee!!!!! I'm running for the train as it leaves the station! I have a bunch of fabric picked out and in my bag, so will go through them and pick some. I might make two -- one in Christmas fabrics and the other in ???? This will be a blast. Oh, I made a batch of cinnamon raisin cookies to go along with Judy's cider in the club car. See you there.

paulswalia - love the idea of a dresser scarf
Ssulabug - Cheryl, I am NEVER EVER ahead of the game on gift making so this is a first for me LOL Shadowirish - no reason you can't make both, and put them together and make it a reversible runner reesky - no reason a kitchen table can't sport a patriotic theme! As to your fabrics, I would stear away from a strip like you are showing. |
