I'm pretty sure I saw it somewhere, but I was looking for estimates on how much of the consistant fabrics to have on hand before starting. For example, approx. how much blue should I have for the sky, to have enough for all 12 blocks? I know it's a guess, but for those that have done this before, maybe there are some guidelines?

all this blah, blah, blah about paper piecing. it's so simple even i can do it. just pull up your big girl pants and jump in. only kidding.
sometimes we fake ourselves out before we try a new project. i found it wasn't as difficult as i let myself think it would be. however, it is time consuming tearing away all that foundation paper. i did an entire quilt for my dg and it turned out beautifully. sure hated it for a while though. swore i would never pp again. but, here i am! shouldn't be so hard to do only one little square. all the completed blocks are wonderful. good starter pattern, sulabug. thanks for all your hard work getting us up and running. |
This was my first time pp and I was looking forward to it after watching a couple of videos on it (just search online or YouTube). The test square itself was eye opening for me as I realized that I need to make sure and check that when I iron back on the seam that the fabric reaches to the SA outside the block I'm working on. I did have to rip out a couple of seams at times. Another one of my boo-boos is that I'd jump to another number out of sequence, thinking I could make it work. That doesn't always work and so ripit I would go!
In the end, I do like pp but it does take some getting acquainted with the orientations. I was not only inspired by Sulabug's House of God choice, but enjoyably challenged! Thanks Sula! |
I have never done this before but I decided I would use 3 different "sky" fabrics. Saw a day, evening, night quilt once that was lovely this way. Found a dark blue fabric with small gold stars that will be used for night, a lite washed blue for day - looks like thin clouds with the "washed" look. Forgot what other is. I am thinking about a muted gold for the dome/steeple. NOW what colors for the church. As this will be night, I am going to use a pale yellow for windows. Remainder up in air. Any suggestions helpful. Gosh I love all of you and your help.

Hello everyone! Had a great time paper piecing this block today. I have never made a pp block of a church or a building before and it was a change from the usual. One thing though, found it tricky piecing the slanted edges of the roof and sky! Managed in the end. As I did not have printed copies of the pattern, I drew them out manually and was able to measure and match the various pieces without too much trouble. It was fun! Can't wait to see what the next block is going to be!

if you fold the paper several times and press it sharply on the sew lines, it will be much easier to tear it off later. I use regular printer paper because I rarely have all my supplies in the same place
