Patrice, it sounds like you get some of your fabrics from Wal-Mart too. Well if I didn't I would not be able to make the quilts,that I have already made. So far, I made a queen for myself, my first project, a baby quilt for great grandaughter, a twin for my friend up north and another baby quilt for great nephew.
I had two of them professionally quilted, but I cannot afford to do that anymore. On a limited income you know. I had to quilt the last baby quilt myself, and also my own.Didn't come out half bad. However on the baby quilt I quilted one whole border which was so bad I had to rip it out. I quilted over it with a decorative stitch,so I hope they dont notice it. |
Patrice, I love this one too, maybe I will try it too. I tried to do satin stitch on baby quilt, but i couldn't do it the little animals were too intricate, so I had to just straight stitch them.
I got a big surprise after having it professionally quilted that it covered it beautifully. Mary |
Ladies, Your tulip blocks are very cute.
You said that you had all opted to satin stitch the pieces to the background. I'm new at this. How do you satin stitich these pieces? Do you add a fabric on the back of the background to stabilize the block? How do you keep all the pieces in place while you are sewing? Thanks for your help. Connie |
I use a washable kid glue stick put on the back anf then put where I want it and sew

can't seem to type today. I use the kids washable glue stick place on back of the pieces ( in the center) then put them where I want them.
I then use a fine satin stich on my machine to sew in place |
All of your blocks are "FAN-TAB-ULOUS" & the stitching is SUPERB!!!!

Some fabric does pucker, I take a piece of computer paper and put it on the back just in case and if I remember right loosen your top tension. Any one have any other flowers that would go with this one?

i ron reezer paper to the back to stabilize. almost no pucker at all that way. peels right off when i'm done.
i'm lucky to have access to a variety of computer programs. I used Adobe Acrobat Professional in combination with Microsoft Word to shrink and multiply the flowers so i could get the size i wanted to fit two onto an 8.5" block. miscalculated a bit so there isn't "enough" space on the sides but i figure that's why they put the word "practice" in the dictionary. and ... really ... G-d bless the little children for giving us the concept of "do-over". LOL what kinds of flowers would you like, Ruth? i'd be happy to make you some templates if i can find what you want in my clipart collection. |
Connie, I just pinned the pieces to the background and satin stitched around them. A satin stitch is usually one of your decorative stitches on your sewing machine. On mine it looks like a zig zag, but when you shorten the stitch length and loosen the tension a bit it comes out close
I did not use a stabilizer. Look in your instruction manual, they explain how to use the stitches and then try out the different lengths until you find what you want. Mary |
