May I be the first to say it in this official thread...the Birds in the Air block was..."for the birds"? LOL! Thankfully, by paper piecing it, it worked...whew! This one was my first block that was really tricky!

donnap 08-25-2010 05:39 AM

where can we get pp direction or the papers

stefanib123 08-25-2010 05:42 AM

Ughh....I'm still working on 5 & 6!

I officially nominate myself for chairperson of the Slackers Club!

Akangel, move over!

Toward the bottom of this page is a PDF link to different sizes of paper gridded HST. The 1 inch one is what I used to make my Birds in the Air. These files are good to save in a folder under quilt patterns as they are used in other blocks as well. They are from Block Central but I couldn't find them on that site. Unfortunately, any odd size squares have to be drafted.

You have to either have a computer program to help you or you have to draft your own. You can use any paper you would normally use for paper piecing. Good luck to you! I use EQ but I know there are different programs that work equally well.

I'm pressing a lot of mine open to avoid big lumps. I always do this on anything that is angled because I know that probably both ends of the angle will be sewn into other seams; this makes for too much bulk, which is especially obvious in such small blocks. It would be so much easier if I could just press them all to one side, though, and I do that ... to the darkest side ... wherever I can do so without "bulking" up the block.

I agree with weezie! That's just what I'm doing as well...some of these littlbe buggers just have to be pressed open!

When there are so many intersections with lumps I press whichever way it lays best.

I really thought from looking at the photos for block 7 that I was the only one having trouble with this one....even with the pp I still had trouble on several of the points...I almost did the block over but as someone said several pages back how will I know if I am making progress if I re-do every block that gives me trouble...so for now it stays as is....

The scan of block eight is pretty close to accurate this time...but the "leaves" of the bouquet are actually a very deep green-they look brown but really green...

Now that I am caught up it is time to get back to work on the pinwheel sampler that I am behind on-it is the quilt along that was hosted by Rachel Griffeth at her P.S. I Quilt blog over the summer...

MzMcKee 08-25-2010 04:20 PM

Everyone is doing a wonderful job...be proud of yourselves!

Rosyhf 08-25-2010 04:22 PM

I imported birds in the air into EQ from Block Base and printed out a pp. It went together real well.

Well I have not even finished blocks 3 and 4 soooooo if I had enough energy I would challenge all of you for the queen of the slackers title.

But instead I am going to go take a nap

wvdek 08-25-2010 05:41 PM

A nap sounds good. Enjoy it while I look for my camera. Arrghh!

AkAngel 08-26-2010 06:33 AM

Ok, I was looking for the link for the 1 inch squares, but I'm not seeing it can someone tell me again. I won't be able to work on this til this weekend but anything that will help those little boogers go together easier is appreciated.

pookie ookie 08-26-2010 01:13 PM

I have the blocks cut out but they're just sitting there mocking me. I'd rather mop the kitchen floor right now. :0D

Kathleen charnell 08-26-2010 01:24 PM

I don't see the rotary cutting instructions yet for block 5 & 6, am I too early? thanks

SNUGQUILT 08-27-2010 07:15 AM

Did I miss it, or are there rotary cutting instructions for 7 & 8 somewhere? Thanks!

Look for the above thread in: Blocks of the month and week. Every week there will be a new thread for that weeks' instructions.

SNUGQUILT 08-27-2010 09:50 AM

Thank you!!! :)

Anyone doing the Farmers Wife in scrappy fabrics.... have you thought about what color fabric to use to frame the blocks and borders? I am trying to think ahead with my scrappy "stash" fabrics.

Yes, I've thought about it, but until I get all the blocks done, I'm just not sure what color will call out to me so I need a bunch done before I try and go there, but it will likely be a subdued neutral color so as not to compete with all the blocks! What do you think?

weezie 08-28-2010 06:46 AM

It's "early days" yet, but unless I'm mistaken, I have a fabric that will work nicely as the border; I don't want to use it for the sashing, though, so I'll need 2 more fabrics that will complement both the border and the blocks without "blending" in. I have a visual image of what I want, but can only hope to get lucky when I go fabric shopping for those other 2 fabrics.

janRN 08-28-2010 07:06 AM

I'm doing scrappy for the first time ever--it's really hard for us anal retentive types LOL! I take so long trying to "figure out" what works in a block that I can't imagine trying to figure out sashing and borders. OMG-another thing to obsess about!! I have a feeling I'm going to end up with about 100 potholders instead of a quilt!!

I'm leaning towards Connecting Threads charcoal Mirage but will wait until more blocks are done to see if it still "calls" to me. Whatever I use will also be the backing fabric.

I am doing scrappy and I don't consider color when I do that. I just divide into light light, light, medium and dark.

I don't even think about border or sashings until I have them on the board and then will choose. I have done three blocks today.

I am working on #20 right now.

shamrock 08-28-2010 04:57 PM

I am doing scrappy and trying to use similar colors as in the book. I am skipping # 7 right now. Next month we go to Pensacola for a Navy reunion. Hubby and his buddies are taking a day tour to Biloxi. I will not go as gambling to me is as exciting as watching paint dry. So I will stay at the hotel, room or poolside, and handpiece #7, and maybe another one like it. I love to hand piece. If I get bored I can always go own to the bar and pick up some old sailor that didn't go on the trip. (LOLOLOLOL) Quilting sounds better.

Too funny Shamrock! Good luck and have fun! I admire anyone who hand pieces block #7!

Actually, I admire you folks machine piecing #7,LOL! I think its waaaay easier to handsew something tiny like that than to machine piece it.

I'm skipping 7 for now, too. Well, I've got it in my hand piece basket to do while I'm watching tv with DH.

violetsfarm 08-29-2010 08:22 AM

I have the new catalog, I will look that fabric up. Thanks for responding.

Thank you Leakus! There is no pattern. I started with the center and worked rounds & then added to the top and bottom. The flowers are paper pieced. I found a pattern a long time ago on the internet for the flower and then drew it into EQ, but will see if I can find it again...

linmid 09-03-2010 01:54 PM

Where do you get the pattern for BOM? I joined a few months ago but so far have done nothing but read all of your emails.
