Hi Everyone, Time to talk about these 2 blocks----

janRN 09-28-2010 06:35 PM

In a word: HARD!! I had trouble with 17 but got it done okay. 18 was easier but doesn't look "right". I'll post pics tomorrow so you all can tell me what I did wrong; kept re-doing but still not happy.

nursie76 09-28-2010 06:38 PM

Oh my! Is it time for them? I thought we started new ones on Wednesdays! AWHHHHH! I thought I finally got caught up and had a day to breath before the next batchtomorrow...drats!!!!!!!

Can't wait to see your blocks.

Hi, I post the 3 new threads for this quilt on Tuesday Evening after 10 p.m. Anne

Phew! Good to know, I was so proud of myself that I had finally gotten caught up :-D . Thanks!

mirabelle 09-29-2010 09:14 PM

I enjoyed making these two, paper pieced both of them, took me about 2 hours for each one so I'm a happy camper. I even like my colors...
I am now officially 2 weeks ahead, will be able to post next week then I am away for three weeks visiting my daughter.

pookie ookie 09-29-2010 09:19 PM

I enjoyed being ahead... and now I'm playing catch up. :0)

Odd blocks this week. Would like to see an entire quilt made of #18. Gonna go search now.

JAGSD 09-30-2010 05:08 AM

Oh My! I guess I have joined the Slackers.... I'm still working on 14's, hmmmmm...........

I'm still laughing about #18. Someone saw angels, Hochey saw Transformers, I see a fat bottom. Hmm-wonder what the block represented originally?

DodY: welcome. Go to the thread titled "I wonder if anyone is interested in doing the FWS"; easiest if you go to Virtual: all the threads about FWS are in one place. I'm glad you're joining and look forward to seeing your blocks.

rwquilts 09-30-2010 08:44 PM

I was worried about piecing #18, because of the points, but it paper pieced beautifully! I did take creative license with the color placement and changed it up a bit...welcome dody!

We all have the "Farmers Wife Quilt Sampler" book. I use the templates, some people paper piece, and there are rotary cutting instructions posted each week. Welcome aboard. I hope you enjoy doing this quilt as much as I am.

violetsfarm 10-01-2010 09:25 AM

Honchey.. these two blocks came together really well for me. I have a general question for the experienced quilters... when quilting a "scrappy fabric" quilt as I am doing for this sampler, does a person use a quilting thread of all one color or match the quilting thread to the blocks?
I really don't have enough experience to know the "rule of thumb". Violet

margie77072 10-01-2010 11:36 AM

I seem to be lost....is there a link to show what block is due when. I haven't been able to find a posting that says ...this week's blocks are...

Hi Margie, You have to go to "Blocks of the Month and week" That's where all the threads for the FWS are. We are doing the blocks in numerical order--2 a week. Tues evening I post the new weeks's blocks. This coming Tuesday eve will be week # 10- blocks 19 & 20.
You work at your own pace. Some are just starting and there are those who are almost done. We post out photos of the blocks and discussions on the appropiate weeks thread (most of the time :) ) There are no quilt poilice here! just a great bunch of ladies on the same journey. Anne

I have been using templates and have been struggling a bit with my points. How would I paper-piece a block? I know there are patterns for certain blocks but can you turn anything into a pp block?

It sounds like these are going to be hard but Century of Progress is one of my favorites to look at. I like how you did the color placement rwquilts and I plan to do mine in the same way. I thought the fabrics had been turned by accident in the first few I looked at and that it was supposed to be done like you did it  To me it looks like a beautiful Christmas tree topper done the way it's supposed to and I think it's nice that way too.

I think these are the prettiest blocks so far! The fabric is so striking in them all. Good job, ladies and I'll look at all your gorgeous blocks again for inspiration as I work with all of those angles...it can be done.

These were surprisingly easy for me - don't know why but they came together quickly. I used templates for the first time (I've been following the rotary cutting directions) for block 18, and just followed the order of piecing for both blocks. I'm having so much fun with this - I've organized by fabric shelves in the process since I'm pulling out all my smaller-than-fat-eighth scraps. (Isn't is shocking sometimes how much fabric you realize you have? Just remember, it's "money in the bank" - even your tiniest scraps cost about $9 a yard!)

QuiltingNinaSue 10-02-2010 05:09 PM

I am trying to use pieces of my stash that would best depict the name of the block of the quilt currently under construction. Therefore, Cats & mice block is put together with novelty prints depicting cats & "robot" mice; Century of progess is constructed from red, white and blue:progress in America.

I was ahead of the blocks ask for each week by ten, but find myself almost falling behind now...think its number 27 currently under construction in the quilting room.

I find each quilt block is a challenge; and fun to do, yes, but not that easy to do. I have joined the ones in this project that has a notebook with protective sheets to "display" each block in order. I thank them for sharing that thought. Thanks for all the tips and the sharing of the beautiful blocks. You all are the best!!!

I have a question about #18. I'm using templates. Which edge of the triangles do I line up along the grain line of my fabric?

I used freezer paper for my block so I felt it didn't make a difference- but I would think looking at the finished block you can get an idea of how to place the template on the fabric to get the least amount of stretch in the direction that it's used in. Do you understand what I'm trying to say???

You can turn most any block that can be drawn with straight lines into a paper pieced block. The easiest way is to use a program like Blockbase or EQ to help you, although you can do this by hand as well. Some blocks work just as they are and a few you must make into smaller straight pieces to work.

JLazane 10-05-2010 02:12 PM

I got #18 done, although I can't tell you how. I measured a little, cut a little, and then trimmed to make it the right size. I figure in a quilt with this much to look at, if someone finds a "dull" point, that's their reward for looking that close at any one block!

Thanks, Honchey, for the rotary instructions. They're lifesavers!!!

HELP......help....help ....Please.............I have been paperpiecing my 3 and 4" (the pieces are the same for the 6")blocks (I have the companion cd)and have gotten to the cats and mouse and I am blocked how to put it together. Could you tell me the order you sewed the sections together? I have all the section ready to sew and have drew a blank. Is there set in seams? I have not been able to figure it out.

Hi, Take 2 of the larger triangles -sew one on each side of the strip that has been already pieced ( 2 Hst pieced, 1 solid square & 1 small triangle)- just make sure that the widest part of the triangle is on the outside. These 3 sections create a larger triangle which is then sewn to a pieced strip which is made up of 3 solid squares 2 Pieced HST's and 2 triangles. You need to do this for the other side also. I hope I didn't confuse you.

Don't you have the book? It shows the layout in the book.

JAGSD 10-20-2010 11:49 AM

Hi Honchey,
The paperpiecing isn't the same as the book block assembly I wish it was it would be hugely easier. It's layout is a touch different. Sections are split a little differently.I still am not able to dfigure it out.

Anne,
oh no! I actually discarded it and started totally over but will get it and do so. Cause I would really like to know. I ended up revising the pattern that came out on the eq5 with companion cd. Then it took me only about 45 minutes to do both the 3" and 4".
I just can't figure out how they wanted it to be done without set in seams and with the 3"block that was working with a piece that was 1/2" and trying to turn for the set in it just wasn't working. I will get a picture of it and post it on here if tht's ok?
Thanks for your help on this!
Judy

ok, I rescued it from the garbage can, pressed it and here it be.....
I am trying to download these pictures for Anne, hope this works this time.

It is actually the piece marked H that is the bugger(the little tiny triangle)where should it be sewed before putting this silly maze together. Then the rest of the steps to sewing.

The pattern I posted says 4" but the 3" pattern prints out the same sections and pieces. So should all go together the same. I still think it must have a set in seam, but very difficult at 1/2"piece.

This is the pattern I used from the campanion cd and eq5

These are the pieces I have to put together. The "H" is my question as are the rest really

Now what?

Hi, If you look at the pattern--H is part of the hst of the section that is the second down from the top of the page on the left side. in other words--if the whole page was the face of a clock. H belongs to the section that is sitting in the area of 8 O'clock.

I believethe section is the letter E. That tiny triangle H completes the E section where it becomes part of the 4piece square. the 2 sections on the left side 8 and 9 o'clock go together then. Hold on i'm printing out a copy and will get back to this in 10 minutes. A challange!!!

OMG ! What a nightmare this configuration is. Yes, there is a set in seam. I have been cuttiing these little pieces outand trying to get them to go together without the inset seam--it won't work. and the only suggestion if you want to do this over is to section it yourself in your software program in an easier to put together pattern. When I did my block I used Freezer paper templates for the 4 pieced squares then added the solid squares to make one long diagonal strip then I did the 2 smaller strips the same way. I then sewed 2 of the large solid triangles-one on each side of the smaller strip- do this for the other smaller strip also--then sew these completed pieces to the sides of the very long strip. I followed the block assembly from the book. I did this block twice before using the freezer paper. If you were to cut off the small triangle from the center triangle and add it to the H triangle then sew it to the section where the H belongs- it would be a larger inset seam and easier I think to put together. 2 longer seam to point pivots. I'm going to bed now. Let me know how you are going to finish it. Anne

That is pretty much what I had come up with too, I had tried putting it together with just paper and it wouldn't happen without the inset. With the Little tiny triangle you would just about lose the triangle I think trying to set in seam it. At one time I did sew it to the other piece but even then it does not sew up even. All in all I did go and resection the pattern a different way then what EQ and The companion CD showed and made the block a different way. But I think I will go ahead and try this one with the set in seam since I have it made up and see what happens. DR. appointments today and dad had surgry yesterday so may be late today before get a chance. Thank you for all your help with this.
Judy

rwquilts 10-22-2010 05:43 AM

I have had a couple of paper piecing patterns that I have had to re-section to get them to work well. That's really not uncommon, as the computer doesn't always give you the best way to do it.

mirabelle 11-02-2010 04:46 PM

Hi JAGSD
Sorry I didn't reply to your request for help, I have been away, keep forgetting to log out.
For most of the FWS blocks I have been drawing my own blocks onto foundation papers. (I have EQ6 still don't know how to use it).
I just find the easiest way to cut apart the sections and sew them back together, remembering to keep the seams straight.
Thank you Honchey for helping, you are the best

I just finished block 17. I started paper piecing block 18. Can't figure out why the piece that is the same color is 2 pieces in the paper piece pattern. I just made it one. I suppose as I go along I'll see why it's that way. Am I bringing up the rear in this project? Really loving the blocks.

PiecesinMn 05-21-2011 07:31 AM

I finished 18 and it works just fine having it pieced as one.
