Yes, Morganfam, many of us are still following these threads and would love to see your blocks and cheer you on! Your Susannah is just beautiful.

JeanieG 10-28-2016 09:33 PM

Very pretty block Morganfam! Keep posting!

katybob 10-29-2016 04:12 AM

Love your Susannah, Morganfam. I used that fabric in a bed-size quilt I made a couple of years ago.

morganfam7 10-29-2016 10:22 PM

Thanks!

Thank you Sewbizgirl, JeanieG, and katybob! I couldn't do these blocks without paper piecing. I guess I'll paper piece them all. Having loads of fun!

Katybob, I got some sample books for a little bit of nothing from a quilt shop last year. This fabric was on one of those sample books. I like that it's all there together and coordinated. I bet your quilt was beautiful!

I learned to paper piece for these blocks and used PP for all of them. Couldn't have done that tiny piecing any other way. I got pretty good at it by doing that much.

morganfam7 11-03-2016 01:24 PM

That's encouraging! I see some experienced people struggled with some blocks which made me wonder how in the world I could do them. I'm glad to know that pping worked for you all the way. Maybe I can do it too. :)

Mine were not always (gasp!) perfect, but it made me happy as I finished each block. And I learned a lot on the three trails (FW three books) with the ladies here on QB. Yours look great, Morganfam7. Looking forward to seeing more of them..

morganfam7 11-04-2016 03:29 AM

Thank you! I feel the same way - not perfect but thrilled with each block when I finish it. I didn't know there were three FW books! How fun!

Farmer's Wife Sampler Quilt was first, based on the Farmer's Wife Magazine from 1919 to 1934. FWSQ was based on the letters written by farm wives on the topic "Would you want your daughters to marry a farmer?" Blocks were 6 12 blocks, all 110 of them. Next came the Farmer's Wife Pony Contest where children won a pony and harness and cart by selling subscriptions to the magazine...and wrote 'Thank you' letters and sent photographs back to the magazine. Blocks were 8 1/2 inches, some 99 blocks. FW 1930 was from reproduction prints of the 1930s, but we used whatever each of us desired in the 6 1/2 blocks, 99 block quilt. Each case she selected the numbers of stories and designed blocks for each story. Enjoy the journey and stories. We all did. However, we are not planning on doing her most recent book coming out this fall bases on Bible verses.

Thanks for that info. The Bible one sounds good. Maybe I'll have enough experience to tackle it alone by then.

When pping, do you pull the paper off afterward and do you reverse at the beginning and ending of each seam? I haven't and when I pulled the paper off today, I noticed that an end unraveled more than 1/4". :(

givio 11-04-2016 12:35 PM

Leave the paper on until you have sewn all the pieces for it. When a block is made using more than one paper pattern, then I remove the paper before sewing the connecting seam. I think it's easier that way to get all the paper off the completed block.
If you are using ordinary printer paper and having some trouble with it, you might consider using thinner weight paper. A lot of people use pages from an old telephone book to print on. I've seen pictures online of blocks made decades ago that still have the paper not removed, and the quilter used newspaper (with dates and interesting news stories that can still be read!!).

I use newsprint when paper piecing. You can use a child's scribble pad paper, or I buy a ream of newsprint which can be purchased from Dick Blick. I buy 2 at a time as the shipping is the same, and it is really cheap and runs through the printer just fine.

mmac71 11-04-2016 04:24 PM

Oh my! JeanieG I didn't know there were so many choices for newsprint paper. Which do you order?

sewbizgirl 11-04-2016 06:57 PM

Also, if you sew with a shorter stitch length, your paper will tear away more smoothly and the seam shouldn't pull out at the end as easily.

JuneBillie 11-04-2016 08:14 PM

Your block is so pretty. I love those fabrics together.
I am way behind. I am maybe going to sneak another in soon.

JeanieG 11-04-2016 10:09 PM

mmac, I got 2 reams of 8 1/2 x 11 newsprint because the shipping was the same as for one. It goes through the printer beautifully, and tears off like a dream. I have almost one ream left from my 1st order.

I used the Carol Doak from www'CarolDoakFoundation.com that sells the paper piecing patterns and supplies.I was s 'sucker' fro all their wonderful paper piecing patterns on sale by email and have most of them on my computer. My long arm quilter was looking for the "Tears of Job' and I found it on Block base on my computer. Block base, I think, came from Electric Quilter that produced EQ7. If anyone does the Bible verses from Laura A. Hird, I would love to see them posted here or where ever.

Yes, I learned a lot from doing the blocks on line with the wonderful ladies who did the blocks with me. Even the Y seams I can handle now. Good luck with all doing this journey. Other Laura A. Hird threads are archived here on QB.

morganfam7 11-07-2016 08:19 PM

Ok, that's a good tip. Thanks!

morganfam7 11-07-2016 08:23 PM

Thank you JeanieG! I just ordered a couple of reams. I bought some dollar stare scribble pad paper for doing triangulations, but I have to trim it down to fit in my printer. I'll be glad to have the right size paper available. For whatever reason, when I started this a year ago, I printed some blocks ahead of schedule. Those were printed on regular printer/copy paper. I don't know why I didn't use the scribble pad. Maybe I was being lazy and didn't want to cut it. Now I regret it, I tell ya.

morganfam7 11-07-2016 08:27 PM

Thanks for that reminder. I noticed that when I reverse, I always pull the lever down to the widest stitch length out of habit. I need to adjust the screw, so I'll know where my pping stitch length should be. I'm sewing these on a lovely 1937 Singer 201A. Such an elegant lady of a machine. I love her!

morganfam7 11-07-2016 08:30 PM

Thank you JuneBillie! We'll both be behind together then :) I'm going out of order, so I'm not really on Week 47. Since I'm a newbie to paper piecing and sewing points or anything more than strips and squares, I'm doing them in the gnomeangel order. I think hers are arranged from easiest to hardest. I think. :)

When I reply, what is expected? Does it alert the person that someone has replied if I click on the Reply that is on the person's post? Or should I put it all in one post by using Quick Reply and include names? Sorry if I did it wrong.
