End of this thread is coming to an end very soon, but I hope our friendships last longer.

I asked fabric store owner for her ugliest or most challenging fabric and she showed it to me and I bought a piece of each that are featured in today' s blocks.Have a good day.

Honchey 07-26-2016 08:04 AM

Nina, you are so clever to use all the fabrics you use in the blocks you make...So special! Your quilt will be very bright as your blocks are so bright!! :)

sewbizgirl 07-26-2016 08:41 AM

Beautiful, colorful blocks, ladies! Nina, you are brave to take on the ugliest fabrics in the store. You redeemed them!

QuiltingNinaSue 07-26-2016 10:09 AM

In case you have a problem ID the challenge fabrics, I will give you some hints. They make you think "candy" and or 'pink'. I think they worked well in these blocks.

sewbizgirl 07-26-2016 01:59 PM

I see the candy and the pink! They came out great in your blocks. Fun.

puma 07-26-2016 02:04 PM

nice and bright. will certainly make someone smile. and lord knows, we can all use a smile.

Oops-- last week's blocks, sorry. Here are this week's I think

Honchey 07-27-2016 05:26 AM

Yes Jan, We're almost to the end. What are we going to do with ourselves???

sewbizgirl 07-27-2016 05:37 AM

Gorgeous use of those batiks, Jan.

Honchey, I hope we can keep chatting in the main thread. After all, we'll need a place to show our finished quilts, once we have them all together.

I am going to try and discipline myself not to start another sampler until I get the 1930's one all put together and quilted.

lawsonmugs 07-27-2016 07:03 AM

I been checking out all of the beautiful blocks that you ladies have made and if you don't mind can I as a couple questions? Wow, what a long sentence. lol. What sizes are the blocks ? Where do you get the patterns? are they paper pieced? Will you be posting pictures of your finished projects? I think they are so pretty. You have all done fabulous work. Mary

QuiltingNinaSue 07-27-2016 08:31 AM

Mary, Honchey is leading us thourgh the third book of Laura Aaron Hird's quilt books. This is the third one that we have done together called The Farmer's Wife 1930. It is available at most quilt shops or Amazon. It is collected stories and quilt blocks from the reading of stories in the Farmer's Wife Magazine from 1919 to about 1933 that she has put together. Most are using the reproduction fabric of the era, but a few wild cards like myself are using what ever I want too. Yes, we paper piece most of them...but not all, depending upon the block. The book comes with a CD with; the blocks, templates and paper piece patterns. There are 99 blocks, so we are three weeks from the finish line, but you can began anytime and access this site by week that we did two per week. Hope that clears up the story behind what we are doing. Ask whatever questions you want and someone will answer them. Our main 'chat' site is the Pony Club discussion page that we have almost finished with. Mine is at the LA place waiting its turn to be quilted. That was the second book of Ms. Hird. The first was the Farmer's Wife Sample Quilt.

Such bright, colorful blocks this week. QNS, it wouldn't surprise me if Givio has some of that fabric! I enjoyed making these two.

lawsonmugs 07-27-2016 10:52 AM

Thanks NinaSue. They are just so pretty. What size are the finished blocks or are the different sizes?

QuiltingNinaSue 07-27-2016 02:12 PM

Mary, the are six and half inches, finish at six inches. Ms. Hird can really cut a lot of pieces into that six inches for sure. first book used six inches also; the second one she used 8 inches. Her fourth book will be out this fall, called Bible verses, or something like that. We have all refused to consider the four book, moving on into the Gypsy Lady, starting in September lead by Honchey again or that is begining discussed at this time.

sewbizgirl 07-27-2016 03:19 PM

Hi Mary,

I joined this group late... they were over halfway! So I have been trying to keep up weekly and also work from the start of the book too-- on my 'catch up blocks', LOL. If you want to make this quilt with us, there are some of us who are behind the others and will not quite finish in three weeks. We go to the thread for the week's blocks and post them in their proper thread when we are done making them. Then there is a main thread where we chit chat a lot. I hope all the ladies still visit there when they are done. I will miss everyone if they don't!

I paper piece all my blocks using the 1930's repros, and most of mine come out at about 6.25" square. Some are 6.5". I'm sure I'll be doing some adjusting when it comes time to put them all together.

lawsonmugs 07-27-2016 03:46 PM

THanks again ladies. For now I'll just sneak along in the background Bonnie. I have really enjoyed seeing all the pretty blocks.

sewbizgirl 07-27-2016 03:48 PM

They are fun to do. Some are hard... a real sense of accomplishment when you get one done.

Honchey 07-28-2016 10:57 AM

Yes, We need to keep the original Updated thread going...Where else would we show our finished tops/quilts??

Love your perfect blocks, Katybob...

Here are mine:

Starlight

I suspect the pink in this block was a blend... that's why it puckered up when I put the iron to it. I 'inherit' a ton of scraps from my quilting group so sometimes a blend slips by unnoticed... until it behaves like this!

Honchey, that orange and yellow is so pretty against the black background and white flowers. :)

QNS you go girl. Those are great and playful bright colors. Lots of those yummy candies on one including that touch of brown that represents chocolate? I like those bright playful flowers on the other. :)

JanRN when I seen the first two you showed us, I thought wow I am losing it, because I could have swore she did some like that already. :D The two you put on after that are very pretty. The first one reminds me of blue skies, and the second one is just gorgeous batiks. The second one has those places that look like summer green caterpillars climbing along a leaf. :)

Katybob those are pretty red and yellows in the first block, and you did a good job of keeping those stripes lined up in the second pretty one. :)

SBG that is such a pretty background print you used in your first block, and those other fabrics coordinate just beautifully with it. Pretty pink, white, and blues in your second block. :)

I will have wonderful blocks you girls finished to look back on when I begin again to finish mine.

Honchey 07-30-2016 02:20 PM

Hi Everyone, I cannot access the updated thread..anyone else having that problem??

sewbizgirl 07-30-2016 03:51 PM

Yes, our main thread is messed up. Been trying to get to that last page in the thread all day and it just shows a blank gray page. I pm'd QuiltinNan to tell her of the problem. Wonder how in the world just one page on the whole site can be out of whack?

sewbizgirl 07-30-2016 03:57 PM

Thank you Susan for that great encouragement... I'm sure you will finish your blocks in your own time. I still have a bunch of old ones to get back to before I'm done.

Today I did an experiment... I joined the BOOM swap which will start soon, and they require you swap 12.5" blocks. I thought some of our 1930's FW blocks would be so pretty, so I tried blowing them up 200% to see if I could get a block that finished at 12.5". Hey, it worked! I made a beautiful experimental block that came out just the right size. That means I can draw from all of those neat patterns to use (enlarged) in the Boom swap.

By the way, the Boom closes tomorrow (Sunday) at midnight. There is still room for about 4 more people... hint, hint. I'm a newbie there... been thinking about doing it for years, just never did. But it sounds like so much fun, making blocks for everyone else's quilts with their fabrics, and then getting yours back all ready to put together into a quilt. Since our project here is winding down, I thought some of you might enjoy the boom. The group with space available is the 2-month group... plenty of time to get blocks made. Think about it!

Yes, I cannot understand why the one page of discussion is not working. Hope they can get it fixed.

Me too... I also contacted PatriceJ and posted to the Help thread. It wouldn't hurt if others would also...

I think the QB is trying to tell us something..

Maybe this is why?

We can all detour here!:o

sewbizgirl 08-01-2016 09:58 AM

Ladies, I just posted a new thread, since it seems we ran out of space in the old one. It would have been nice to be told what happened, but since we were left hanging I started a new thread so we can continue with our fun chatting. Hope that's ok with you all...

katybob 08-02-2016 03:41 PM

Great blocks, Jeanie. Love that yellow fabric -- have you used it before?

sewbizgirl 08-02-2016 06:57 PM

Those are super pretty, Jeanie!

morganfam7 10-28-2016 07:28 PM

Are people still posting to these threads when they finish blocks? My husband was in the hospital for awhile, so I'm just now getting back to all these sweet squares. I was going along with Gnomeangel, but I'm so far behind everyone. I finished Susannah tonight, and I'm thrilled with it! Thanks for all the pictures y'all posted. They really help a newbie with fabric choice :)
