The FWS 30's Quilt-Along Week 15 Block 29 Doris & Block 30 Em

Hi Everyone,
Doris looks to be an easy block & Em is rather busy but fairly easy to do.. I have my fabric chosen for these two blocks and that is as far as I am with these two.. How about you ? Anyone have blocks to show?

I do! Em was very time consuming!

Honchey 11-10-2015 07:09 AM

Thank Goodness Pam!!! Pretty blocks and fabrics. Love the little umbrellas and your Em looks better than the photo in the book :)

Pam P 11-10-2015 07:18 AM

Thanks Anne, I have been waiting to use the umbrella fabric. It came in a collection I ordered online. This seemed like the right block for it. I was happy with Em too but I swear I worked on it for 3 hours. Glad to see you back online and hope you are feeling much better.

Honchey 11-10-2015 09:03 AM

3 hours, that's all????? a block like Em takes me all day!

QuiltingNinaSue 11-10-2015 09:35 AM

I may well be the slowest kid on the block (s)! Doris is done, but after many frustrating days, Em is only half done...but I like the half that is done except the colors...the ones I wanted to use did not come together. I am pp Em since the first try not pp did not work out, it was 'wonky' for sure.

Pam, I love your Doris and Em. Well done. Love your fabrics and colors and block-work too!

Pam P 11-10-2015 10:28 AM

haha the 3 hours did not include choosing the fabric nor cutting the pieces. Just the sewing part and it may have been more than that because I stopped a few times.

Thank you QNS : )

These aren't my favorites, not happy with my color choices or that the stitching shows. Guess I should have used darker thread. Pam, your blocks are so pretty, happy blocks.

QuiltingNinaSue 11-10-2015 06:47 PM

JanRN, I love your uses and batiks and how you combine your colors there. Wish I had that 'better' eye to see the vision in batiks. Just half of Em is done although I now have all the pieces cut out to put together...hopefully, tomorrow.

Depends on the storm that starts at midnight tonight with strong winds, possible tornado or two in the area. Hail comes in the afternoon tomorrow. We shall see what happens tomorrow. We do not have a weather radio 'cause radios do not work in a steel constructed home. May it be a good day where you are tomorrow.

givio 11-10-2015 08:48 PM

Oh! my goodness! Is that 84 pieces in a 6" block? Oksewglad will like it! :-) ...I'm glad I didn't look ahead. Still behind on the blocks, but definitely not giving up. Just behind. I've been working a quilt top-- but it's finished now and I can get back to where I left off with FW.

Whew! Every which way but right way down to the last seam of EM. Doris was a sweet one to do. So happy Em is done, too.
Weather man is like the little boy who cried Wolf repeatedly when there was no wolf to see....'severe storm warning' so far is a big fat zero...no rain, and no wind, sunshine is shinning.:o

janRN 11-11-2015 02:33 PM

Love your blocks, QNS. Doris is almost Christmasy and Em very pretty. Thanks for your compliments on my color choices--that's the hardest part of quilting for me. I'm pretty confident in my sewing/piecing--but picking colors takes me longer than making the whole block. And I'm still not always happy with my choices. That's why I like these quilt alongs--it's nice to get someone else's thoughts and encouragement.

QuiltingNinaSue 11-11-2015 05:02 PM

Thank you JanRN for your kind words. the photos changed some colors in Em, the 'pink' looks red in the photo, but so be it. It is done.

The storm never came in like they predicted, but we did get rain no hail no tornado here Any body else have Doris and Em ready to show?

Pam P 11-11-2015 05:11 PM

Jan I love your batik choices. I would never trust myself to do an all batik quilt. All my colors would be dark. But yours are bright and I like the purples. I like how the white square almost looks 3 dimensional on Em. QNS your Doris does look Christmasy, love it!

QuiltingNinaSue 11-11-2015 07:24 PM

Thanks, Pam. Maybe I was thinking about Christmas year around fun.. reading Christmas story novels. LOL!

oksewglad 11-12-2015 05:50 AM

What a nice variety of fabrics...Will we ever get over our amazement at how different the blocks look with our fabric choices. Must say the umbrellas are sew cute.

Dare not use an umbrella today...gusty wind blowing through..Work today...have a good one

I was beginning to doubt whether I'd ever finish Em. Whew! Not the most difficult so far, but certainly the most time consuming. Such pretty fabric in everyone's blocks this week. I think I have some scraps of that umbrella fabric somewhere. It's in the quilt on the guest bed, so I must still have some tucked away.

QuiltingNinaSue 11-12-2015 02:04 PM

Kakybob, another neat set of blocks. Yours really look like the sample in the book. We are one third of the way done with this project.:o

katybob 11-12-2015 02:38 PM

Like Jan (but unlike Givio), I'm not too hot at choosing fabric, so I'm pretty much selecting fabric based on the book. There sure seems to be a lot of orange in the samples.

Pam P 11-12-2015 03:46 PM

Me too Katybob and I feel like there is more than a fair share of blues in them.

janRN 11-12-2015 06:00 PM

Great blocks, Katybob. I love the peach fabric in Doris. Em had to be the most boring block in the bunch to make, hope there are no more like that (altho once finished it's a nice block).

katybob 11-12-2015 07:06 PM

Thanks, Jan. Em was really boring. I just ran into a problem with Eva and although it's one of next week's blocks, I wanted to bring it to everyone's attention before you start. The paperpiece templates finish at 6 3/4" and not 6 1/2". I thought at first it was a problem with my printer, but the one inch scale on the printout is one inch for me. If I trim it down, it'll cut off the points.

JeanieG 11-12-2015 10:20 PM

Oh yikes katy! Not there yet, but a definite problem. Now, how do we resolve this! Is this mentioned on the website???

I did a quick search and didn't find anything about it. I'm sure Honchey will see our posts sometime today and get back to us.

janRN 11-13-2015 05:31 AM

Katy, I just measured my finished Eva and it's exactly 6 1/2". Did I do something right or wrong LOL?? Most of my other blocks range between a little over 6 1/4" to 6 1/2". Once I press & block the smaller ones and add sashing they'll be okay. This happened with FWS & FWS Pony quilt and they turned out fine. I also measured the block after Eva and it's 6 1/2" so you may want to check that one, too, if all your other blocks are 6 1/2" so you don't end up with different size blocks like I do.

katybob 11-13-2015 05:51 AM

It just occurred to me that I may have jumped the gun and needn't worry about it. I haven't put the pieces together yet and the ones that measure 6 3/4" are the long diagonal ones. I bet when they're joined I'll have a 6 1/2" block!

Rosyhf 11-14-2015 12:10 PM

Beautiful blocks ladies. After studying Em for a while and counting the patches (64) patches. I went into Eq and pulled up the 64 patch blocks and picked a different variation. They are just HST and squares and can be arranged anyway to make whatever. ...so maybe today I will pick three fabric and see what comes out. I am so glad I have EQ and Block base......

I edit in eq and colorize the block and eq just colors it in.

Honchey 11-17-2015 07:03 AM

Just a reminder ladies there's no new thread this week..See you next week...H.

QuiltingNinaSue 11-17-2015 08:22 AM

Thanks, Honchey. Next week is Thanksgiving, so is it the 1st that we post new blocks? Now if I can find my printout of your dates, it would be great...oh, my mind forgets so much any more! LOL! :o Life goes on.

JeanieG 11-17-2015 10:57 AM

Oh good, I am a week behind, hopefully I can get caught up! I also thought it would be Thanksgiving week we would break.

Honchey 11-17-2015 01:44 PM

Boy oh Boy!!!! You would think I would get my weeks straight..I will post the new thread right now..Thanks Nina, what would I do without you????? :)

givio 11-17-2015 08:31 PM

Hmmm. :-) I was thinking the same as Jeanie...

Em-- what a tedious block! If the points aren't perfect, who cares, it's done! I applaud all who got her to iron out smoothly.

QuiltingNinaSue 11-26-2015 04:53 PM

Givio, love your block. I hope we are done with Em and do not encounter another one like her.
