The FWS 30's Quiltalong Week 33 Block 65 Mother & Block 66 Mrs Anderson

Hi Ladies, I can't believe this Quiltalong has only 33 blocks to go after this week.. Where has all the time gone??

Time for Show & Tell...

Here are mine.

JuneBillie 04-12-2016 08:09 AM

Pam P your blocks are just so pretty. The red/blue is so pretty with the different colors of little dots, and your dark purple and lavender is so pretty together. :)

Pam P 04-12-2016 08:46 AM

Thanks Susan. The dotted fabric in Mother is actually two different color combinations between the squares and the rectangles. It kind of makes the block look a little 'off' I think but I still like it.

Honchey 04-12-2016 08:53 AM

Pam P, Love your blocks & colors .. Y seams don't seem to be a problem for you. That's great..

Pam P 04-12-2016 09:28 AM

Oh they are still a problem, I still haven't managed to get May finished. Threw two of those away. This block provided good practice though. Thanks Honchey.

I finally have the new ckicks happy, so here are mine:

Pam I like your two blocks. More 'eye[ candy, please, ladies.

What bright, cheery blocks you've both made. I swear no drugs or alcohol were consumed when I made these blocks. They sure turned out wonky.

Honchey 04-12-2016 02:17 PM

I love the way you avoided making the Y seams Jan, I may copy it when I eventually make this block..

Pretty spring colors in yours Nina...

givio 04-12-2016 07:17 PM

Pam, I like your subtle look with those two fabrics. It's like a whisper, or a secret. :-)
QNS, love that center fussy cut and the pansies too. But the choice of yellow and green fabrics, really sets your block off!
Look at you, Jan! Aren't you the clever one! Why wasn't that pattern that way in the first place, I wonder?

sewbizgirl 04-12-2016 07:24 PM

Those are some gorgeous blocks, ladies. The fussy cut pansies sure are cute.

I am totally intimidated, tho. I have just printed out the paper piecing patterns for Mother and Mrs. Anderson. Now I have to figure out how to paper piece-- ack! Everything is so darned tiny....

lynnie 04-12-2016 08:44 PM

the fussy cut pansies look wonderful!

JuneBillie 04-12-2016 09:21 PM

Pam P, I looked back at what you were talking about with the dots, and then I seen the difference, but I also think they are so pretty.

QuiltingNinaSue, your blocks are so pretty. I love those little pansy faces. I always say they have little faces. The purple with the batik is so pretty too.

JanRN, there is two more pretty ones you have made. Your blocks look great to me.

I don't even have my Monette done yet, but do have it started. Here is why! (seeing my dad quite unresponsive, but I think he was a bit better today, and then got word that my sister that's 4 years younger than me fell and broke both feet, and to end my evening I got a call from my clinic and they said I am at the very least a carrier for Hemachromatosis, but it will take Genetic testing to know if I am a carrier or have it active. Now I have to tell my siblings that they need to be tested. My son has the same thing.) I hope all of you girls had a better day!

My favorite line in "Gone With the Wind", "I will think about it tomorrow. Tomorrow is another day." lol....My hubby calls me Scarlett. lol...

You have a lot on your shoulders now, Susan. One day at a time. Lifting you up in prayer....

Well, here is my very first 30's FW block, paper pieced, no less! I think I have figured out the paper piecing thing, more or less. Here is Mrs. Anderson:

I hope these blocks are not supposed to come out at 6.5" square, to finish later at 6".... Mine was just a shade over 6" from raw edge to raw edge. I trimmed it down ('shaved' would be a more accurate term) to 6".

QuiltingNinaSue 04-13-2016 04:24 AM

Well done, Sewbizgirl. Very well done for your first in paper piecing!

Susan, you have so much on your plate, but take it one moment at a time...and it will all workout for you...I know it will. Trust in the One above your own way.

The flowers are not pansies although they look a lot like them. These are an ate-able flower I love to plant every year or freeze them in ice cubes.

janRN 04-13-2016 04:24 AM

Wow, Sewbiz, if that's your first attempt you are going to ace paperpiecing. Very well done! As to size, they're supposed to measure 6 1/2 UNFINISHED. When I measure mine, the majority are 6 1/4 but I have a few that are 6 3/4 and some that are only 6. I'll block, stretch and fudge them to fit--the sashings can be adjusted a little, too.

Very proud of you that you jumped right in!!!

Will be thinking of you, Susan, and sending positive thoughts your way.

What great blocks from everyone this week! Sewbizgirl, your first attempt at paper piecing is as close to perfect as anyone can get. And JanRN, I wish I'd studied Mother's pattern more before I started her. What a smart revision!

Honchey 04-13-2016 06:25 AM

You girls have been talking about dots and didn't understand at first then went back to the block to see...It's almost undiscernible.. ( couldn't think of another word)...

Great job Sewbiz.. I find when I don't pp or use a guide my seams are bigger than 1/4". most of my blocks are coming out at 6 3/8". I'll be setting them on point so there won't be a problem...

Katybob, is that an initial "P" in the middle of your block.it sure looks like it :)

Susan, Sending hugs your way...

JuneBillie 04-13-2016 01:37 PM

Thanks everyone for your well wishes.

One wonderful thing I have to share today is that my son and daughter in law are going to have a special ceremony in September to say their wedding vows again for their anniversary. I look forward to this. He is my only child. :)

You girls are making wonderful blocks. Each block is so pretty.

Sewbizgirl, wow, you did a great job on your very first paper pieced block. It's beautiful. I don't know about you, but these blocks have helped me to really learn and understand the paper piecing process. I am hooked on them now. I am still working on my Monette, but I am having fun, and hope to have a bit more time this week to do some sewing. Maybe I will get a bit more caught up.

One question I have. When you girls that started on time last year finish everything, will the rest of us still just keep posting as we have been on the designated week for the block we are on until we finish? Can we still yell for help if we need it? lol.....

Have a great rest of the week everyone. :)

Honchey 04-13-2016 03:06 PM

I think that we might just keep the last thread going until all the blocks are done & everyone is finished.
What do all of you think about that????

Pam P 04-13-2016 04:19 PM

Yes I would love to keep up with everyone's progress. I'm looking to see which one I will do next! Plus I will still have some to catch up on after the last week.

givio 04-13-2016 08:23 PM

sewbizgirl, you are right, the pieces are tiny. :-) Yesterday I cut out and sewed a 12" block, which I haven't done for awhile, and all the time I was thinking, "wow, these pieces are so big, wow, this is going together easy, wow, this is a big block," etc.

Fun to see the new blocks posted! I plan to get to mine on the weekend.

The ceremony sounds like a real special event for you to see, Susan. It's wonderful when your children are happy and doing well, isn't it? :-)

Honchey, I suppose anyone could start the blocks at a later time, so I suppose the Board could leave the threads posted to be available for other people to use, either now or later. It seems like late-comers can always go back to post on the proper thread. When they do, that seems to make the thread come up near the top of the list, then other people can look at the new post if they want. Maybe after the last block you could post a thread where people could post pictures of how they are setting their blocks and how they finished and quilted the tops.

JuneBillie 04-13-2016 08:23 PM

I would like that. :)

sewbizgirl 04-14-2016 10:37 AM

I'll be around, posting blocks late too, Susan!

JuneBillie 04-14-2016 05:27 PM

Yes, me and sewbizgirl will be around. Also Pam P, but I know you are way ahead of us. :)

Here is my Mother, side by side with Mrs. Anderson... These little suckers are fun! And kind of addictive. I got a lot faster at PP on my second one. The first was the worst!

givio 04-14-2016 08:20 PM

sewbizgirl, some nice vintage looking fabrics there!

JuneBillie 04-15-2016 03:07 AM

Sewbizgirl you did great with having your mother finished. It looks great. I hope to get these two worked on over the weekend, and try to catch up to all of you. I agree, they are addictive. We put a lot of work in them, but when I get one finished I feel so proud of it. :)

Honchey 04-17-2016 05:15 AM

Love the vintage fabrics Sewbiz and the other block is so soft & pretty....and Yes, they are addictive!

JuneBillie 04-17-2016 05:50 PM

I almost have Mother done. That still leaves me with Mrs.Anderson. Well, I will still have Monday. Will I or won't I catch up? :D I am having fun so that's all that matters. I love the whole process.

Will that book that comes out in November that has bible blocks be another quilt along that you girls are planning or is it just a thought at this point? Just curious.

Honchey 04-18-2016 04:45 AM

Quilt'nBee.com did a block of the week? with Bible blocks named after women called "Women of the Bible" the blocks are different sizes and have a story about each of the women...I downloaded every block...I'm not sure if I want to do another quiltalong..That said, maybe one of the group here would host it?

Here is my Mother block, but it sure is wonky.

I didn't get a good picture, because it looks like I cut off some of the lower corners, but it's a full block. It's jjust wonkly in the middle. lol....

I don't know why my pictures turn out so big, because I resize them.

katybob 04-18-2016 05:30 PM

Great job, JuneBillie! I love your fabric -- especially the dotted black with the yellow flowers.

Pam P 04-18-2016 05:37 PM

Me too! I love that fabric. Great block Susan!

JuneBillie 04-18-2016 06:51 PM

Thank you.

sewbizgirl 04-18-2016 07:42 PM

Love your block, Susan... and your vintagey fabrics. That block was HARD. But it's going to look great in a quilt.

When I get to Paducah I'm going to be on the lookout for some more reproduction 30's prints. I have lots of colors but not much in neutrals or white backgrounds. I also hope to find more solids in the right colors to use with these prints. Most of the blocks seem to have one print and two solids.

Honchey, I'm sorry to hear that you have lost interest in this project. :( But if it's not floating your boat, I can see why you'd want to move on. I love making these complicated little buggers. It would be so easy to stay up all night sewing, as I get so engrossed in them.

JuneBillie 04-18-2016 08:27 PM

Sewbizgirl, I need to pick up more solids too. I've got to get by a fabric shop. I know I will want to pick up a few more 30's fabrics too. I will be trying to use pieces from some of the fabric I have already used in a future different block. I think it will connect good like that.🌻

givio 04-18-2016 08:56 PM

JuneBillie, great choice of fabrics on this one, it looks really good. I'm procrastinating on this block. To me, it looks like, "ok, is this one worth the effort?" and "All those tiny triangles in the middle..." and "Maybe I'll do a substitute." I just keep putting it off-- and tomorrow is the posting day for next week already. I'm going to be behind. All weekend I sewed until my back hurt, I made a top nearly from start to finish, all because I'm procrastinating on Mother. And the name of the block doesn't help either. *little smile*

sewbizgirl 04-19-2016 05:06 AM

I thought that too, Givio! "Mother" really was a mother... :D

JuneBillie 04-19-2016 07:31 AM

Make it three. I thought that too with Mother. lol... Now if one of these next blocks are full of y-seams I may start putting it off. hehe.. I will have to look. After all I have plenty from the start to do anyway.
