My blocks 5 & 6. I had to do block 6 twice because the first one came out 6-1/4".

Here are my blocks 5 and 6. Thank you Megan who was on the chat line in the wee morning hours who helped me figure out how to put block 5 together. My blocks are far from perfect but I'm having so much fun and learning so much with the help of many of you. Thank you, thank you!

I gave in to the call of the KT fabrics and did blocks five and six...one print in each block came from AK....

Block six scanned darker than it actually is....if I knew what I was doing I might be able to fix it....but just use your imagination and lighten it up by about a third or so and you should be pretty close to what it really looks like...

I've been waiting since last Thursday to post pictures for 5 & 6. Now I have clear up to #15 done, and two of Broken dishes, one will be a potholder (alittle on the small side). Using a mix of Kansas Troubles, Buggy Barn, Thimble berries and a few other odds and ends.

Just got 5 & 6 done of the Christmas blocks. I'm not doing #7 for the second quilt. Those tiny triangles drove me nuts.

Gee Whiz---Do you think if we ever do a potholder swap---I'm wondering how many of them will be Block #7 from the FWS Quiltalong    !!! I know of 2 so far!

After seeing all these beautiful xmas blocks I know I'm going to have to do some--maybe just the easy ones--I don't need anymore potholders !!

janRN 08-24-2010 03:22 AM

I love the Christmas blocks.

Speaking of potholders, I have a feeling I'm going to end up with 100 potholders--I love making blocks but don't like the quilting part. Hopefully with all the encouragement I'm getting here I'll make a quilt. If not: I'll be ready for potholder exchanges thru the year 2025 LOL!!

PJL 08-24-2010 05:40 AM

I'm thinking my potholders will all be #7!! Good to know I'm not alone!

I came to work today thinking to myself "I'm going on the FWS board and just vent about this stupid #7" and now I don't even feel like I have to do that since it seems others are struggling with #7 also!

Misery (and frustration) loves company!

rwquilts 08-24-2010 06:20 AM

LOL! When I read this thread's posts, I had to go into my sewing room and count my "pot holder" blocks and I have 3 so far. We really should have a pot holder exchange after this is over, huh? I thought I'd take some and make decorative pillows out of them to match the quilt!

I started this block the second time by doing the very bottom 2 rows of the birds first-it's a small triangle in itself--then I did the top row of birds making sure they are nice and straight- -then I sewed them together--the thing is try not to handle them too much-Starch or whatever you use really helps before you even cut the fabric for this block--I even trimmed off the seam allowance on the paper template to measure my little birds(place paper on right side of the sewn piece to see if it fits in the section you've sewn. If the paper fits in nicely you're ok if there's too much room or if the paper doesn't sit in there--you have to rework the piece.

Now that's a good idea! I had the most trouble with the basket one. I have several of those.

peppermint31 08-24-2010 08:13 AM

Mine is # 13. It is 7 inches! am considering putting it in a corner & making my sashings smaller. maybe I will let it alone for a while and eventually take it apart again

Rosyhf 08-24-2010 01:30 PM

Ohhhhh, I love the Christmas blocks. I have 15 blocks done. I think I will do a couple more today, it's dark and rainy and I have finished reading another book by Cookson.

PJL 08-24-2010 01:36 PM

I am going home now and tonight I'm once again attempting #7. I'm going slowly and using Honchey's ideas above.

Will let you know how it goes tomorrow.

Has anyone posted a picture of #7? I dont have a picture of it and now I am afraid to attempt making it.

You're right number 7 and 13 are both bears. But I feel I should tell you to prepare yourself for number 18. I didn't understand the lay out so I tweaked mine.

peppermint31 08-24-2010 03:43 PM

I looked at 18. That is a draw on graph paper and pp for me.

I worked on #13 for 3 evenings in a row. Finally I threw it down and told my husband I was going to have to finish it later! The next evening I picked it up and finished it. I have no idea how many times I ripped it out and started over. Thought I would never get all the points together.

I've done a quilt based on the same design. Make all the outside triangles that you add to the end of each row larger. The excess gets trimmed off after the block is completed--you will have very nice points.

ruacajun2 08-24-2010 06:32 PM

I made Block #7 It took time and patience but I think I did a pretty good job. Good Luck on making yours.

Robinlee 08-24-2010 07:02 PM

Not sure what to think...........I thought #7 - Birds in the air was a breeze (first time for me to do such small triangles), but #11-Broken Dishes I practically did 3 times. 1st time to large, nearly 6 3/4"-7" then took apart, and redid it and turned out smaller - course now that one will be a potholder or part of a pillow case. The third try was perfect. But explain this : #17 - Cats and Mice was again a breeze for me (now the second set of tiny triangles I've ever done), but give me #19 Checkerboard and I had to do it twice - once again measured just over 6 3/4".

Next question - For the EQ5, EQ6 owners: (I don't own, sister {JAGSD} and cousin do.) Does the Farmers Wife Companion CD work with EQ7? I am thinking about purchasing, but I would rather buy the most recent version. But I also want to know if it works with the Companion CD to FWS. Which is the best purshase for my money. I would have to save to purchase this set and I just want to be sure and to have input from my quilting friends would be great. Thanks

I was told by my LQS that it does indeed work (companion cd) with EQ7.

Robinlee 08-24-2010 07:10 PM

good, my sister wasn't sure....and I knew QB would be the best place to find the answer. Thanks.

I drafted #18 in Quilt Assistant then paper pieced and am still not really satisfied with it. It was HARD to do. #47 has set in seams, wait until you get to it. I ripped and ripped on that one before it came together.

For #7 I used a 1 inch gridded HST paper piece and it turned out OK even though they drove me nuts. Tomorrow I'll post a picture in the correct thread.

AkAngel 08-25-2010 12:58 AM

the new thread page is up if you want to go ahead and post.

Good Morning!

Still didn't get #7 to turn out correctly but I got a couple of new potholders! I thought I was right on when doing the triangle part and then got to adding the big triangle and things just didn't match up. I could attach them but then when I put the quilt blocks together in the end my triangle points will be cut off.

I'm not giving up though. Will be at it again tonight. Thought maybe I'd move on to #8 and then come back to #7 after I have some success with #8!

Suzanne57, I am looking back over this week's blocks and I think your bat wing is one of my favorites-I love the purples.

AkAngel 08-25-2010 06:14 AM

Very nice, looks much better than my bat wing turned out I may have to redo it.
