The FWS Pony Club Quilt-Along 46- 60 Block Completed Milestone Photo page

Hi Everyone, I know there are a few of you that are up to date with completed blocks so give yourself a pat on the back and show us what they look like all together...H.

QuiltingNinaSue 08-08-2012 03:59 AM

Looking forward to seeing them; just got my on the vertical display board and working on setting them together or starting to do that....then I will post...at the correct time on the site here.

I'll go first. PLEASE tell me what colors I'm lacking (the colors on the monitor are just a little duller than IRL). The white you see between the blocks is batting-they're all quilted except the last 4. (No, I'm not an over-achiever--blame it on insomnia). Spotted dog paws in upper right corner will not be in final quilt. Be brutally honest PLEASE!!

carriem 08-08-2012 04:43 AM

Jan--WOW!!!! Your blocks look amazing all laid out!!! If I had to choose a color, maybe more yellow??

gardnergal970 08-08-2012 04:47 AM

JanR...how nice your blocks look together. When I first saw your blocks my eyes were drawn to the two bright blue blocks in row s4 & 5. Looking closer there are a couple more blocks that have a brighter tone with the pinks. Maybe more brights in the mix would help the few you have blend in more and give more balance. You seem to have the color wheel covered otherwise.

I don't know if I can show all of mine in one shot but will give it a try. I agree, Jan, that this will be a large quilt. I'm also thinking of doing two. There are several blocks that just beg to be set on point, too. I have fabric that I can use for setting squares that compliment the sashing I'm using, too. I like what Anael has been doing with her blocks.

I couldn't get all 60 blocks on my design wall so I'll post separate pictures

critique welcome. I am planning to make several quilts out of these blocks. I like what Anael is doing and some of the blocks are just begging to be set on point. I have fabric that picks up the color of the sashing I'm using and got bumped from it's original project a year ago and needs to to move on. I'm planning to do QAYG like Jan does. I'm learning so much from the thread in the challenge section that I have a lot more confidence to do it. What I'm finding though is that I still like piecing better. Probably because that skill is improving and getting better results as I go along. I can't begin to tell you all how much belonging to this group has helped me and how much I've learned. You all keep me going!!! Thanks so much.

janRN 08-08-2012 10:20 AM

Ggal, those look great together. Not the dog's lunch at all LOL!!! You have a nice balance of colors and I love how your sashing and cornerstones pull everything together.
I like doing mine QAYG. It's the only way I'll finish it. I do mine differentlly. I'm quilting all the blocks with batting then I'll sew them together and add the backing as one large piece. The only quilting that will show on the back is when I quilt the sashing and cornerstones. It makes for a really blah back of the quilt but no one sees that usually. I didn't want to do all the hand sewing between the sashing and blocks that most people do with QAYG. I have a little neuropathy in my fingers and have trouble holding on to the needle for too long. This works for me--I don't have room in my life for the quilt police LOL.

gardnergal970 08-08-2012 01:56 PM

Jan, you might want to investigate Jenniky's tut under the orphan block challenge. She does everything by machine. Her instructions are very clear and she welcomes questions. BTW...thanks for your kind comments.

JeanieG 08-08-2012 05:23 PM

Oh those are looking great gals! I have got to get going on mine again, but like Anne, I cannot keep away from the Olympics. Just love watching all the events!

carriem 08-08-2012 05:59 PM

Ggal--WOW to you too!! The sashing added to your blocks just finishes them so nicely.

I too am going to put some of the blocks on point in one of my quilts. I could probably make 3 quilts, but have decided instead to make 2 plus some throw pillows and a runner for my cedar chest.

QuiltE 08-12-2012 07:50 AM

*gasp*
*take my breath away*

and yes, I'm green with envy, that you ladies are so far along the trail!!

JanRN ... You want brutal honesty? See above!!!!! :D Your colours look well balanced and a nice mix of the brights with some duller colours. As already said, perhaps a little more yellow? ... I know, I know, you are not a yellow fan. See how the yellow you have used dances and shines? Just a wee bit more to enhance it a bit more. Did you decide on your sashing/cornerstones? The white batting looks grand, so what about white? and yellow cornerstones? :) or a light green? And oh how I like those pops of turquoise1!! Maybe even a lighter turquoise for the cornerstones?

GGal ... another beautiful grouping. I shrunk my display down to 22% so I could get a look at them all on the screen at the same time!! Again, a good mix of colours. I like the Civil War fabrics, or perhaps not, but the more muted tones that are in your mix. If anything, perhaps a little more white, as where you have used it, it seems to just add a little sparkle. I see this as being in reverse to Laurie's comments about it's good to have a muddy block every so often to give the eye a rest. Likewise in a more muted blend, I think the clean white (or other clear colours) adds and even brings out the muted colours.

Looks like there's going to be lots of
PC QAYG finishes ... and variations of how to do it. I haven't decided yet, but have bought enough backing that I can do it as QAYG if I feel competent enough!! :)

JanRN ... do come on over to the QAYG thread, and share of your experiences. I didn't quite understand how you did your QAYG process till just now! I finally do!! :) When you do your quilted blocks, do you use a fabric on the backside of the batting? or is it just your pieced block and batting, and no fabric?

PC Quilt Size? ... I keep reading how large it is? ITA when I see mine on my design wall. However, I think we are getting optical illusions, because the blocks are so big compared to our FWS. Keep in mind that we are making fewer blocks. Plus I believe the final dimensions for Laurie's PC is smaller than her completed FWS!

janRN 08-12-2012 05:16 PM

Thank you QE for the nice compliments. Yes, I know yellow (ugh!) but I did add it to some future blocks. My sashing is a dark navy blue with pale green swirls. I found some white fabric with very faint navy blobby things that I think I'm going to use as cornerstones. It reads mostly white.

As for my method of QAYG, I just made it up. I quilt my blocks with just the batting behind, no fabric. I like Warm & White batting--it's thin enough but holds its shape. It also doesn't get caught in the feed dogs (which I leave up). When I did FWS I made the quilt in 3 sections; then after I attached the backing I quilted the sashing and cornerstones then put the 3 sections together. I'm planning on doing this one (or 2 if I make 2 quilts out of the PC blocks) as one large backing section. I don't know. I'm intimidated by the size of this one.

QuiltE 08-12-2012 06:32 PM

You're welcome JanRN ... the navy and white with blobs will work perfectly! Truth be known, I am not a big yellow fan either. However, I think it's because of the "colour" of the yellows. I see some and can drool over it ... and then some just have a funny tinge/tone that has me right back saying I don't like it! :) Don't let the size intimidate you ... you've got enough experience from doing the other ones that you'll be ready for the next step. Of course, perhaps the next step will be LAQ on your friend's machine? :)

JeanieG 08-12-2012 06:47 PM

I am not a fan of yellow either! Because I am a "summer", I really look my best in pink, and blue tones. So I gravitate to colors that I personally know look good on me. Yellow I cannot wear at all!

Do your quilts wear yellow?

Way back when, I was told, no matter what season we were, every colour was in our palette. Just that it was a different shade/tone etc. for our season. So, which yellow for our summer ladies? I'm guessing a nice clear soft pastel sunshine yellow?

I'm an autumn ... so I suspect my "official" yellow probably has a brownish tinge? Like sunflowers? And oh yes, I remember, I was supposed to wear "mustard" to which I turned my nose up ......... I hate the food, mustard, and sorry, any connotations of it in clothing, just turns me off. Now call it a different colour ....... and maybe!! :)

I couldn't have said it better :D

I don't have any milestone to show, just my first finished PonyClub quilt. There are more to come!

I hope you all like what I did. I'm not sure it needs some more quilting. I only quilted the light blue blocks and did SID on all straight lines. And of course the white and blue border. So tell me what you think.

After seeing the pictures it looks a bit weird. There are 3 pics but it looks like there are only 2. The quilting in the blue block is not very clear, when you look at the picture with the whole quilt you can see the quilting better.

JeanieG 08-13-2012 10:44 AM

Oh Anael I think it is beautiful - your friends will love this new nap quilt!

QuiltingNinaSue 08-13-2012 10:45 AM

I like what you have done in making a very special quilt for a very special person...and will look forward to more similar to this one. It will be loved.

I am usually more of an orange person than yellow, but do use it once in a while for an accent like in the D9P blocks I am working on this week (well blocks are done and waiting to be quilted now)....

carriem 08-13-2012 02:08 PM

Anael--I don't think your quilt looks weird...you did a really nice job showcasing the PC blocks and pretty quilting on the solid blocks too.

QuiltingNinaSue 08-13-2012 03:18 PM

DP9, CarrieM, looks great. I use yellow to brighten or 'pop' a block...but not in the New York State block coming up in 2 weeks...for some reason the author used Yellow for the center of the star...not me in our Flag, it is symbol of the home of the brave and free, not cowards that the yellow implies. Oh, I know some religious groups do not say the Pledge of Alliance any more in schools, and even fail to stand in honor of those who died defending our freedoms. My grandfather, father, and dh served in the armed forces and I do not think that is right. Millions of Americans lie in graves across the sea that never came home to live here again...

Honchey 08-13-2012 07:40 PM

Anael, Your quilt turned out great ... your hand quilting is impressive! Carriem, I have 2 0f the fabrics in your DNP and look at them once in awhile wondering what to do with them...Now I know...I have made several of the DNP...so easy...haven't quilted them..just tops...some day maybe..H.

QuiltE 08-13-2012 07:46 PM

Anael ... what a lovely quilt, all finished! Your quilting in the border looks very even and such a pretty design. Sorry, I can't tell if it's hand or machine quilting? Your SITD will stabilize the sandwich. About more quilting, what distance does your batting say? That'd be your big determination, I'd think.

Anael 08-13-2012 10:04 PM

Thanks all for your kind words. It's machine quilted on my Bernina. My batting doesn't say a word! I bought it on a 50 meter roll and it came without instructions. It's a polyester batting.

gardnergal970 08-14-2012 04:50 AM

Anael, you block turned out great. Such an inspiration. I plan to make several out of my PC blocks and your setting is a great idea.

Carriem...your D9P has such wonderful colors especially the larger floral in your big squares.

carriem 08-14-2012 02:22 PM

Thanks for the compliments on my block. :) I got all the rows together today and have posted on the UFO thread if you want to see...I am VERY excited about how the quilt came together. Not just another D9P...take a look: http://www.quiltingboard.com/quiltin...ml#post5440936

JeanieG 08-14-2012 03:11 PM

Oh Carrie, I just love your D9P with a twist. That is an awsome looking quilt. Can hardly wait to see it with the borders on.

gardnergal970 08-14-2012 03:46 PM

Carrie...it took me a couple of looks to find the twist. How clever. I love the colors you've put together.

Anael 08-15-2012 02:21 AM

That's a gorgeous D9P Carrie!

oksewglad 08-17-2012 04:14 PM

What lovely starts and finishes! Congratulations everyone!
After cleaning the sewing room and then sharing my projects with family members I need to tidy up the area again
 But family members went home with some small quilts which means I have an excuse to make more!! Can't wait to get caught up on the PC now and plan on working on the FWS as well.

Well, I finally finished all my backlog of blocks and BOM's that I got behind on when we were gone on our trip. I pulled out my two stacks of blocks - one with horses, and one without and put them separately on my design wall. Here is what they are looking like - not in any layout order as yet - just stuck up there so I could get photos.

oksewglad 08-22-2012 08:05 PM

Oh lots of nice colors, Jeanie. Are you planning two quilts--one with ponies and one without or have you just sorted blocks as such? The ice cream bowl block is a nice bright spot:)
Got a pair of FWS posted tonight and block instructions up to block 50 on that. Also a Barbara Brackman block done as well as the PC blocks I have posted. Now my printer won't scan
. Back to troubleshooting.

Honchey 08-22-2012 08:36 PM

Oh Jeanie, me oh my, your blocks look so good together.. I'm jealous...64 blocks done! here's a pat on the back!!!

JeanieG 08-22-2012 09:16 PM

Yes oksewglad, I am planning one quilt with the ponies and one with all the misc. blocks. I made two lap quilts for my FWS quilt also. Much easier to quilt on my DSM! It is kind of amazing to see them all together!

Anael 08-22-2012 11:56 PM

Beautiful blocks Jeanie!

gardnergal970 08-23-2012 04:04 AM

Very nice, Jeanie.

janRN 08-23-2012 04:20 AM

Jeanie, beautiful blocks in both. You have such a nice balance of color and really good contrast. Great job.

QuiltE 10-16-2012 07:58 AM

OOPS! It seems I forgot all about this thread ....
So nice to re-visit and see the beautiful groupings

JeanieG ... Beautiful! So nice to see ... and now you'll be even closer to the finish line!

and me-thinks there are Some Ladies who are holding back on us and have the requisite number of blocks done to post to this thread!!! ........ and have NOT! :D

Pleeeeeeeeeeeeeeeeeeeease favour us!!!!

_______________

CarrieM ... I really like your D9P batiks ... great colours!

QuiltingNinaSue 10-16-2012 08:15 AM

Who on earth are you pointing your finger at, QuiltE of this PC group?? There's four fingers pointing back at yourself! (I have a good excuse...camera battery hinge is broken..that's my story and I am sticking to it.) However, I am enjoying the show of blocks and patting these wonderful folks on the back for showing their work of art. Wonderful. Great. Terrific job.
