Very cute bunnies QuiltE

QuiltE 04-08-2012 08:20 PM

Thanks Ladies for taking a look!
I had SO much fun when I was making them ... and might make them sometime again, and add on fuzzy bunny tails and other trimmings.

Ok, here is something else I finished during our Spring break. It is the quilting and binding of Roll, Roll, Cotton Boll, the 2010 Mystery Quilt I finished a year ago January.

I finally just got up the nerve to quilt it on my DSM. I followed advise of Penski (on this board) who said to put the backing, batting, and quilt top together on a large table. Divide the quilt into 3rds, and cut just the batting out of the sandwich. Number the battings where they were butted up together so you can reattach the batting after you finish quilting the center section. I used quilting spray and sprayed the center parts, then quilted just that section. I then used some fusible interfacing I cut into 1" strips and ironed the next piece of batting to the quilted middle section. I then used the quilting spray on that section and quilted it. By doing it in sections, I did not have to deal with the whole quilt getting in the way. I thought it worked really well.

I stitched in the ditch first, then traced designs on Press and Seal. I put these on the quilt and just followed the lines. I cannot do FMQ without following something! The Press and Seal pulled off easily and I am happy with how the quilt turned out.

The quilting does not show up it seems, I used invisible thread on the top. I should flip it over and take another photo.

JeanieG your RRCB is beautiful, I made one but did not put the string blocks in it.
Hope everyone had a lovely Easter

QuiltingNinaSue 04-09-2012 03:42 AM

JeanieG, love your mystery quilt; beautiful colors. Neat quilt inspector too. Looks like you rated high with him.

janRN 04-09-2012 04:41 AM

Very nice, Jeanie-I love the colors you used. Thanks for the info on quilting in sections and glad to know it worked for you-that's something I may have to try. I absolutely hate quilting a large quilt so I don't make any!
Cute kitty. Why is it when our furry friends see a quilt spread out they immediately claim it??

carriem 04-09-2012 05:17 AM

Jeanie--great quilt! Thanks for sharing with us.

QuiltE 04-09-2012 05:38 AM

ooooooooooooh JeanieG .. that is a beautiful scrappy, indeed! The beige strings really make the pink/green blocks pop, but not attack!

What a good idea to get rid of a lot of the bulk and let you quilt. Now you have me curious about the PressNSeal .... does it actually stick to the fabric? and not shift off? Do you mark it before you put it on the quilt? or after? How large a patch do you put on at a time? (*note to self* buy PressNSeal!)

gardnergal970 04-09-2012 05:52 AM

Jeanie...your quilt is gorgeous and it must make you feel sooo good to have another UFO completed. Mystery quilts can be such a mystery but your choices of fabric really make this one shine. I'm waiting for your answers to QuiltE's questions. I'm still not a FMQ'er. Need lots of practice.

The PressNSeal really does stick beautifully to the fabric. The string blocks are 10" squares finished. I cut off around 9" of PressNSeal laid it onto the quilt pattern and traced it with a fine point Sharpie. I just stacked them on top of one another after I traced them. Then took one at a time and laid it onto the section of the quilt and firmed them with my hands. I used small vertical and horizontal guidelines on the top and sides to align it onto the block so they would be in the same place. I had already used my stitch in the ditch foot to do all the straight lines (in the middle section only), I only put one piece of PressNSeal on at a time, and quilted that following the lines. Because your only doing around 9" I just made sure that that section would move easily, not like your moving the whole quilt around.

I don't do meandering or anything like that, but I can follow a pattern line pretty well with the feed dogs down. I cannot say this is "really" FMQ, but I am pretty happy with the results. Hey my quilts are for me, and family and I don't plan on putting them in any shows or sell them! They don't have to be perfect!

They have great buys of PressNSeal at Costco.

dublb 04-09-2012 07:52 AM

Oh Jeanie, It's lovely. If ya git a chance we would like ta see that back. I bet it feels great ta git 'er' done. :)
I've used Press & seal w/good results also.

He had already been napping that quilt as I was working on it! I sometimes had to move him to get to another section! LOL

:D:D:DMy cats love all of my quilts.

Termi 04-09-2012 07:58 AM

JeanieG, taking some of the batting out before quilting sounds like such a great idea!! Thanks for that tip! Your quilt is beautiful, just love the colors. What a pretty white quilt inspector you have too.

QuiltE 04-09-2012 08:10 AM

Thanks JeanieG for the PNS technique details. Great explanation. I'm sure going to try that one! Much nicer than having to mark a quilt, and deal with the removal of the markings. I don't know why you wouldn't consider it to be FMQ?

DublB and Others ... any further tips to add to the PNS method?
I've never heard about it, so am all bunny ears!!! :)

gardnergal970 04-10-2012 04:57 AM

Spring break must have "broke"....or everyone is preparing to have this weeks blocks ready to post the minute Honchey posts the link. I must admit the chuck wagon's overflow of goodies has left me stuffed and I am suffering a little jet lag from the trip to Hawaii....but wasn't it fun? Thanks again QNS for all of the wonderful plans and for everyone else for contributing and enjoying it with me. So today I finish putting the borders on my D9P and arrange the strip quilt on the design wall and start sewing the blocks together.

We've gotten just a little frost over the weekend and more predicted but the strawberries are covered and should be okay. Raspberries are showing buds and I saw my first rose bud showing color last evening. The clematis is covered with blooms and has reached the top of the 7 foot trellis. So pretty. My DH has decided he doesn't want to bother with the grapevine that is barely living so I'm going to move it up by my garden and give it a little TLC and see what happens. My DGF had rows of grapes along his driveway and then a couple on a trellis over the walk to the kitchen door. I'm dreaming of a trellis....

So goodby spring break...hello summer!

QuiltE 04-10-2012 05:13 AM

Good Morning All!

One more day of Spring Break ... is everyone busy doing last minute things of Spring Break? Like IRL holidays how we push to do more the final day than the whole time?

GGal ... it looks like you've been busy between gardening and your sewing! You had me smiling, and wondering if your strawberries and early plantings were tucked in with pretty quilts, to protect them from that frost!!! Now wouldn't that be a picture?? :)

Honchey ... Thank you for your wisdom in giving us the Spring Break! It feels so nice to be caught up. I stayed focused on the job and am happy for it. Of course, there are other things I let go a little, but that's OK, as that was in my plan!!! Now to stay caught up!!! :)

All this extra food and fun has been good ... though now I need the garden work to work it off. However, I will probably resist for awhile on that. It's far from "safe" gardening weather here as they were talking some snow/rain today. It doesn't look like it though ... but who knows? the weatherman does like to keep us in surprise!

This is the little surprise that is visiting with me until the end of the week. We went to the beach yesterday...it was a gorgeous day. ...I got a little sunburn not too much...just a little pink...Tommy had lots of fun.

QuiltE 04-10-2012 06:17 AM

Oh cuuuuuuuuute!!!!!!!! .... and it looks like GrannyHonchey won't be doing any quilting for the rest of the week!!! :) Have FUN with your Lil One!

Paper Piecing with "Y" Seams

I have to follow info in another posting...Have to leave to take DH to the golf course.

carriem 04-10-2012 08:12 AM

I have fabrics cut for cat's paw and "confounded" rose so hope to get those sewn up today. I think I have 10 blocks done, far from being caught up, but not worried about it since I didn't get to start until the end of February. I am having so much fun with these blocks.

I am having a "girls day out" with 3 friends Friday. We have 4 quilt shops on the list and maybe a couple more on the trip back if there is time. I will take my KT fabrics to see what else I might like to add. :)

Excellent tutorial, Honchey!! and to think you could post while taking care of grandson Tommy. He is a real cute guy.

Getting ready for incoming turkeys & ducks...may be they will come tomorrow. I gotta go to Kirksville and have my window in the van replace tomorrow...I pushed too hard with the 1x6s & 1x8s 12 foot long to get them to fit and they cracked the windshield. Of course, we had raised the deductible so it comes out of our pocket. But I will be able to visit the quilt shop there...

QuiltE 04-10-2012 10:30 AM

CarrieM ... take your time for CR and you'll be just fine with it! Looks like you have a great Friday FART oin the works!

Honchey ... great pics and explanations for all!

Extra Y-seam tip ... I stab the pins thru in several places along the seam, to get it all lined up good. Then do the traditional in/out pinning, and pull out the stabbed ones. If I have problems holding it all still and lined up, I also stab thru the seams that I'm not sewing, and that has helped a lot (just figured that one out last night while doing CR!)

OMG
QNSue ... yes, glass is not forgiving when trying to cram things in! Poor you for the extra costs. So the question that begs to be asked ... what are you building?

Which leads me to ask
Everyone ... does anyone have one of those wooden barn quilts on their property?

I don't! ... If I was on the farm, there'd be one for sure. Here, there just really isn't a "right" place for it. Unless I had a small one in the flowerbeds?

Honchey 04-10-2012 10:56 AM

Closed Seam "Y" as in Eastertide

8 Attachment(s)
I hope this helps anyone that has a problem with this type of joining. I only remove the paper in the area of the seam I am sewing. that helps with keeping the bulk down and I also press seams open when they won't cooperate.

With right sides together place pin thru point of the square to the closed "V" of the main section

align the corner points and sides to make sure they are squared and straight.. stitch from the outside edge to the end of the line do not go over it...pivot around...sew a few stitches...remove from machine.

Clip the seam at the "V" to where you ended the stitching on an angle to just inside the point leaving one or two threads... Do NOT go past it.

finger press the seam open...swing the square around so that you can align the other side for sewing...pin the points then fold the piece so it lays flat and you can see where the other seam ended.

sew from the outside edge to the ended seam then pivot around sew a few more stitches remove from machine...finger press the seam ...turn the piece over and it should be nice and flat.

Oh I had been thinking about that Honchey!! .... and wondered if DGS would be Home Alone so that you could go? Or if you'd be taking him along!! :) Have FUN ....... and win win win!!! You've had a nice long stay this time!

Great tutes Honchey! (note; I put a tiny drop of glue right by the pins that were stabbed. Place the pieces w/the pin head down & heat set it with the tip of the iron.) For me this works.
QNS Thanks so much for all of the plans on this Spring Break. This was fun!

Great tut Honchey, thanks for sharing with us.
Lovely acorns, QE. May have to invest in some of that fabric.

I'd be *shocked* (and disappointed) if you didn't, OKSGlad! .... I particularly like that all over one ... and curious if the bling might be subtle enough for my PC sashing

First reaction--gold might overpower browns in smaller cuts. IMHO

True .. though I would so love to see it IRL! Maybe when you find it, you'll send me a smidgen. :) I'm thinking of a leaf fabric from a few years ago ... the gold was very subtle, and was thinking it would pull/blend with the gold. Regardless, it's a lovely fabric and I can see using it ......... somewhere, somehow!

gardnergal970 04-11-2012 04:42 AM

Honchey...I did as you've shown for the y seams except clip the fabric. Instinctively I wanted to but was afraid it would cause a problem. I'll do that with the other half of the D&D block. I bet there will be no puckers. Thank you sooooo much.

QuiltE...no barn quilts here. I'm too busy trying to get my family covered to worry about that right now.

QNS...that little bit of length should fit right? After all the first board probably did but then the window curves a little and the next board is the same length. I guess that's why they made pickups. Sometimes us "can do girls" just don't know when to call it quits! But the bonus is the LQS's will have the pleasure of your company and I'm sure you'll find some winning fabrics.

Honchey 04-11-2012 04:58 AM

Gardnergal...In D&D there is no clipping...the seam where you need to turn the added piece over to should be open because you wouldn't have sewn past the intersection. H

Termi 04-11-2012 08:02 AM

Honchey, thanks so much for the tutorial with the pictures. I'm a person who is "Y Seam" challenged.

janRN 04-11-2012 08:10 AM

Thanks for the tutorial, Anne-you make the instructions clear and easy to follow. I did Does & Darts but I have a new bumper sticker on my car: Life is too short to stress over Y-seams! I might (said Might!) try one more with your instructions but I'm not promising nothin' LOL.
