Aren't the weeks just flying by??? Can you believe it's almost 4 months since we started???
Yay, I'm a happy camper... I have my blocks done for this week...

dublb 04-24-2012 06:22 PM

Oh Honchey, they take my breath away. Ya did a great job!!! Such lovely contrast. ET has contrast in the same color & In ES the blues, browns, & creams work tagether fabulously.

oksewglad 04-24-2012 06:26 PM

Also breathless in Iowa. Just lovely, Honchey. You catch the "spirit" of both the blocks.

carriem 04-24-2012 06:49 PM

I agree with the others comments...WOW! Great blocks Honchey!!

Honchey and Anael your blocks are beautiful, I have mine made and will post tomorrow. It is waaaayy past my bedtime, and I really shouldn't be on the computer. (So don't tell anyone:eek:)

Anne & Anael--just gorgeous blocks! I substituted a block for Eastertide. When I think of Easter I think of my dad and the beautiful hyacinths he grew (he had fantastic flower gardens). QNS sent me the hyacinth fabric so I used Monastery Windows (Quilters Cache) to showcase them. I hope these pics go through; I'm in a coffee shop at the rehab center visiting my mother.

QuiltE 04-25-2012 04:50 AM

As JanRN would say .... yipppeeeeeee!!! my favourite morning of the week (OK, the yippppeeeeee was my own touch!)

Honchey ... Your PPPPP speak totally of Easter (that'd be Perfect PP'd in Purple)!! So much motion in the background, the FC horses bodies, the points and with the stars, that the whole block really looks like it's spinning.

Anael ... Looks like you and Honchey were working together on Ella's! And your Eastertide looks so Easter'ish and Spring'ish! Great FC and PPing!

JanRN ... What a lovely tribute to y our Dad's flowers and I'm glad you switched the block up, so that you didn't lose those beautiful hyacinths. I can almost smell them now! And more flowers for Ella. You've really mastered PPing! :) Glad you have an internet connection nearby to your Mom ... how is she doing?

I'm always amazed at different fabrics, and placements, and how blocks can look so different. I had to shrink the page way down in size so I could get JanRN's Ella's up on the screen at the same time as the others ... to convince myself it really was the same block. And yes it is ... just takes on such a different look that my eyes were being tricked! All are beautiful!!!!!!

I second QuiltE's yipeeee. I love Wednesday mornings for all of the beautiful blocks and all of the comments. Here are mine for the week. I fudged on the little square frames and just used 2 pieces. I knew that little bugger would not stay square and the y seams are challenging enough without any more help. I looked ahead for them too....there will be more. They are becoming a little easier. Honchey, your tips really helped me. I also left out the little square in the middle of the block since I didn't use a different color. KISS!!!

Honchey...great way to lead the posse this week. Beautifully done.

Anael...again you've done beautiful work. Everything is so square and matching just where they should. Great fussy cutting.

JanRN...those hyacinths are perfuming my sewing room they look so real. Beautiful blocks.

QuiltE 04-25-2012 05:35 AM

GGal ... what better for our GardenerG to have in her blocks than some purdy posies? And beauties they are, along with the piecing and the innovations! Soft and romantic for Easter ... and me-thinks you snatched from my stash for your yellow and blue! :)

wendiq 04-25-2012 06:49 AM

Guess I need to get to work this week.....I'm out of blocks so have to make some....LOL!

Honchy......Just put 2 & 2 together.....You are also on the Yahoo site....well, whatever, your blocks are so good....:)
Anael.....You know I'm a fan and these blocks just keep me raving.....
janRN....I can smell those flowers.....beautiful
gardenergal....Well done......more flowers to enjoy......

I LOVE seeing what you all make....so much creativity......so many ideas.......:)

Anael 04-25-2012 07:18 AM

JanRN, gorgeous fabric! I can see why you changed the block and made this one!
GardnerGal, beautiful! Once the block is in the quilt nobody will notice the block isn't square.

Wendiq, thanks :D I need to go back to work too! I'm not out of blocks yet but will be soon!

JeanieG 04-25-2012 09:33 AM

Great job everyone. I envy those who have these finished. I've finished Eastertide (except for the corner squares), but have not started Ella's Star.

Anael 04-25-2012 10:15 AM

Hang in there Jeanie! You can do it!

Well, after seeing everyone else so perfect...I post my pictures that shows problems, but not changing mine. I tried paper piecing, but not much better luck, so I winged the other side...Twins, this week. Less challenging blocks coming up, I have worked ahead a bit and having fun with Flying Cloud.

oksewglad 04-25-2012 04:41 PM

Yeah it's Wednesday!! Gonna dash and get my blocks started.
Anael--beautiful color contrast in your Easter block and look "snow" horses. Visited with the Dutch connection this weekend and they said they had lots of snow this year.
Jan-love how the green slows down the color in those hyacinths--what a nice substitute. I think it's neat that we feel we can use something else for whatever reason. The second block has an Oriental feel to me.
GGal your color combos are very unique and showcase both blocks very well. Color placement of those 2 small triangles change the look of the 2nd block, don't they?
QNS-wonderful interpretation fo Eastertide. I too have chosen "wood" in the center of my block--wonder where I snatched that fabric from (lol)? The star fabric in Anael's looks the same in block 2. Again we see how fabric placement changes the block.

Now off to the sewing room for sure!

dublb 04-25-2012 06:03 PM

Wow look at everybody's blocks!
Anael - I love your mint & blue in ET & I do think of snow when I see your ES. Perfect points!
Jan - Hyacinthes do represent Easter, & a great way ta remember your DF. What a great substitute for ET. The blues & white make those oriental flowers shine. Nice blocks!
GG - Oh, I love how your sashing & cornerstones are lookin'! I love those FC flowers & ya picked the perfect accent fabrics for each one!
QNS - When ya put your blocks in with the other blocks ya won't notice any small imperfections. Don't sweat it. Your colors are beautiful & all i saw at first was the horses! Had ta look really hard ta see anything wrong. (I have a very large monitor that makes the blocks bigger than they are IRL.) I see that you & Aneal have the same blue star fabric in ES. I think that I'll use it to 'cause it is so pretty in both of your blocks.

I'm gonna print out my Freezer Paper & pick out fabric tanight. I plan on sewing tamarrow afternoon.

QuiltE 04-25-2012 07:26 PM

QNSue ... I like how your Easter horses look like they are charging as a group, and then scattering in every direction! Then some 4th of July horses .... the whole family, I am sure! :)

Everyones blocks are so beautiful and I am so envious of those perfect rascally corners. I tried and tried and tried to set the seam but it was such a tiny seam that I ended up sewing it in by hand. My first time at hand piecing, will wonders never cease. They are definitely not perfect but as the saying goes "I'll quilt it out"

mirabelle 04-25-2012 08:03 PM

They look worse up close like that, I may just redo them..

QuiltE 04-25-2012 08:19 PM

Oh how I love the fabric mixes you've used for both blocks MiraB ... as usual beautiful they are!
I can't wait to see your first 30 grouping,
MiraB!

I think we're all finding some challenges in this quilt ... which is good for us ... otherwise, how will we ever get better, if we don't have challenges to grow our skills?

Oh no they are beautiful! Don't redo 'em. On the monitor they are bigger than IRL, so all of the little things show up. See how they look when ya take the picts of 'em all tagether. I bet ya wont even notice it. By the way, beautiful colors. I think they are lovely!

I think ya hit the nail right on the head. I've learned so much from all of the challenges this quilt has thrown me!

mirabelle, your blocks are lovely. I like the different color values you used in the Eastertide block. I'm sure some steam pressing will help those corners as well--yes they were buggers. It also helped for me to press that corner patch so the both seam allowances were pressed toward the center of the block. Have you used the roses on blue background yet? As always, great FC them in!
I couldn't help but think of The Old Rugged Cross when I first saw this block, so like QNinaSue I chose a wood fabric complements of her. Ella's Star was fun to PP. (Quit snickering QE!!!) Oops looks like I cropped off more than I needed to!

Anael 04-26-2012 12:30 AM

Great blocks mirabelle and beautiful fuzzy cutting! I wouldn't worry too much about some flaws. My former sewing teacher used to say: steam pressing does the job LOL.

Oksewglad, your blocks are beautiful and the fabrics are lovely.

QNS: beautiful! Great fuzzy cutting!

mirabelle 04-26-2012 04:15 AM

Thanks everyone for your words of encouragement. Will post pics of my first 30 blocks tomorrow. Today has been a long day.

QuiltE 04-26-2012 04:28 AM

Perfection in the fabrics chosen, the work done, and of course, I have to remember to give a nod to the PPP!!!!!!
Your Easter block really did pick up the Easter theme ... I've been tempted to use Easter fabric, but the block speaks totally to the true Easter. Maybe Ella's will see something juvenile? :)

gardnergal970 04-26-2012 05:04 AM

QNSue...you do such a great job with the fussy cutting plus you have such beautiful horses to showcase! I'm glad that we don't have to have perfect blocks to post too.

Mirabelle...looking good. I can't wait to see what your show and tell looks like. You've chosen such classic fabric. I bet we would never know that it was made on a dusty trail ride! And perfection is for the quilt police...none allowed on this ride. It really is encouraging when people who have quilted for many years finds a challenge and is willing to let the world see it.

Oksewglad...you braved the little squares in Eastertide and conquered. Great job.

Termi 04-26-2012 08:01 AM

Eastertide and Ella's Star

What beautiful blocks all. I'll have mine sometime in the future but for now I'm going to oooh and aaah over yours.

Honchey, your blocks are stunning and look perfect. I love the blue/brown/cream color combo!!

Anael, beautiful blocks and perfect points. Love that blue/white color combo!!

JanRN, oh I love the hyacinths!! They're one of my favorites. I can just smell them now. Beautiful fabric in both and such great work!!

gardnergal970, love the colors in both your blocks. Great job!! Blue and yellow is one of my favorite color combos.

QuiltingNinaSue, your blocks look great!! The horses look so pretty with the surrounding fabric. Great choice of wood for the cross.

Mirabelle, your blocks are so beautiful, no one will notice any little imperfection. I think they look great!

oksewglad, your Eastertide is wonderful!! It does look like an old rugged cross. The block has a feeling about it, can't explain it. Very pretty fabrics in Ella's star.

dublb 04-26-2012 10:49 AM

OK - The Easter Tide blocks with wood for the cross are perfect! I have ta break away from my fabric & at least use a brown for my cross, Hmmm & blue for the background. Your ET is awesome! You & QNS have inspired me. Your Ella's Star has some great fabrics with wonderful contrast! Not ta mention great PP!

Termi 04-26-2012 11:53 AM

OK, I need to vent. Those little corners in Eastertide are kickin' my butt. Honchey, I've tried but keep getting a tuck in the corner. I'm going to take nap.

Termi, Did you look at the photos? and read the instructions? are you sewing into the "V"?... sew the first seam going into the "V" (inside corner) from the outside edge. sew just till you come to the 1/4" seam lines...don't cross over that line...put the needle down into that seam line..lift the presser foot and turn the block around without removing it from under the needle. sew several stitches to anchor/fix. remove the block from the machine...finger press the seam. you should then cut the seam allowance on an angle into the "V" just to where you just finished sewing at the pivot point.Photo 2. look real close...can you see where the angled cut is? this is the part that is most critical..if you don't cut deep enough into the seam allowance the little square will pull up on the fabric you're sewing it to and create a pucker when you have to turn it around to sew the other seam. you need to cut up to 1 or 2 threads of that inside corner. if you have to ..practice on some scraps....or even on paper until you get the hang of it. H.

Honchey, yes, yes, and yes. The photo is a little blurry but I know what you mean about cutting the seam allowance at an angle. That's the one thing I didn't do. Thank you so much for the detailed instructions! I will persevere so I can stay on the trail ride with everyone. But sometimes I may fall off the horse.

oksewglad 04-27-2012 09:22 AM

That's why we're all here together-to catch anyone who falls for it may be me next time!

Honchey 04-27-2012 09:54 AM

We've all been there before...I sat with Does & darts for days trying to remember my first handpiecing classes doing open-ended seams and turning the piece to fit...and it doesn't always come back alltogether...rip, rip, I forgot to do this or that. Ugh, take the whole thing apart and start again...One thing I have learned and it works for me is to re-press the pieces after handling them too much..H.

Ok I wasn't happy with my first attempt at Eastertide so I did it again, I did the main part yesterday and it has taken me all morning to sew in 4 little bitty corners. It's a little better but not perfect.

Termi I complete sympathise with you, I too have a sore rear end :o

Now lets see if I can get the next two made without any dramas

mirabelle 04-27-2012 07:59 PM
