The FWS Pony Club Quilt-Along Wk 22 Handy Andy & Hen and Her Chicks Discussion Page

Hi Everyone, Week 22 is here and I did notice the there's been alot of activity here...I wish I lived closer to you gals so I too could enjoy all the fresh fruits & veggies being picked. I have a single peach tree that has 94 peaches on them and now I have to cover the tree cause the deer and squirrels eat them.... Again, I don't have any completed blocks this week...I DO have them cut out and almost ready to sew...I seem to be having a hard time picking out fabric for them and the next thing I know it's another week and nothing to show for it...It's like I've got a mental block of some sort....Hopefully the bug will bite me and I'll get over to the machine...H.

QuiltingNinaSue 06-05-2012 04:03 PM

It is one stitch at a time, like the first step is the start of a journey...or task. Did not think I would get down to my blocks this week, but started yesterday and Handy Andy kept changing on me...taking most of the day...of the free time I had. Hen and chickens had me digging into my stash, repeatedly, to get the colors acceptable today. dh helped with lunch, so that saved me some time.

Spent last Friday in a lovely cabin by Lake Rathburn at Honey Creek, visiting a friend until their family could arrive. Of course the guys went fishing...caught couple small channel cat and blue gill. The family is having a wonderful time at the lake, they are staying through next Saturday, enjoying their time together with their kids, grandkids and great grand kids. So happy for her. If her dh does not go to Bahamas next fall, she has offered to take me...guess I had better get my passport. Told her I would never fit in a two piece swim suit.

oksewglad 06-05-2012 09:54 PM

I've been under the weather the past couple days so nothing's getting done! Hopefully tomorrow brings a new and better day!

janRN 06-06-2012 07:02 AM

Anne, I'm glad things are getting better for you. Things are the same here but I'm trying to get back on some type of schedule. Thank you all for your kind words and thoughts and prayers. You are my "therapy"-cheaper than drugs and safer than booze.
I apologize again for being an absentee participant but hope to get back into the fold/campfire this week.

carriem 06-06-2012 10:53 AM

Hello All! I am out in the clubhouse getting ready to choose/cut fabrics for this week's blocks. I had to make a scrapbook page for my mom that took longer than I thought it would. Oh well--it's done now and I can sew. I started new med yesterday for my back pain (going on and off since the end of March) so am a little out of sorts today! Hope to have pictures to post tonight...

JeanieG 06-06-2012 04:02 PM

Anne and Jan - hope things improve for you soon. So sorry for all the trials and tribulations. That is life I'm afraid, and we have all been there!!!

Carrie, sorry to hear about your back problems. That has to be real hard on you. Hope the new meds work out, sometimes they take some time to start working.

mirabelle 06-06-2012 08:56 PM

Carriem so sorry to hear of your back problems, I also have major back problems but so far I have been able to get by without medication, fingers crossed it continues.
I have good news from this side of the world, my 30 year old DS has just bought his first home, had to wait for a few legal issues to be sorted out but everything is in place and he will take possession in 2 weeks. Now I am going to miss him terribly (he is only moving 3 streets away:o) BUT I get to move my sewing stuff into his double bedroom and I won't have to share my sewing stuff with my DD's bed which made life a little cramped. I haven't discussed with DH yet but he will be painting the room for me and I get 3 huge cupboards which take up one whole wall.
There is only one down side and that is it could take him a month to move out completely, we have to go furniture shopping and everything else shopping as he doesn't have anything so that is going to be fun, he hates shopping and DD and I are going to give him a whole day of retail therapy:D

carriem 06-07-2012 05:18 PM

Thanks for your thoughts on my back issues...the meds seem to be working. I have already tried physical therapy and chiropractic. Side-effects are no fun and I was too tired to sew this afternoon, but that is ok I will have time on Saturday too to get out to the clubhouse.

Hope everyone else is feeling better by today!! :)

Since I got home from Texas on Monday I've basically spent the week in recovery mode. I did do the week's blocks and sew the binding on the next two gift quilts. I'm finishing them by hand and have one of them about 1/3 done. When I saw that the FWQ links were active again, I was challenged to take pictures and post what I have done. The pictures aren't always good quality because of my lighting and I don't have sashing on all of them but this will keep me moving on the quilt if only a little at a time. I used Marti Michell's cutting guide so what I have done doesn't follow by week. Here's the baby quilt I finished last month that will be for my DH's first great grandchild. JeanieG 06-08-2012 10:01 AM

What a great colorful baby quilt, gardnergal! The baby will enjoy looking at that, for sure!

Hello All ... anyone remember me?
I haven't forgotten you ... life has been crazy-busy ... and like some of my other PC-Sisters, my back has been bothering me. I know why .... too much garden work!!! At least this time I know why ... whereas sometimes I'm in agony and saying, why? :)

I haven't done any PCs for oh so long! I really feel like I'm going into remission!!
Spare time this week was to getting entries ready for one of our local Fairs. Took my entries in today and then pick them up on Sunday. And this weekend there's a gazillion other things on the agenda. This afternoon I had the pleasure of going to a quilt show. It was the first time for this Guild to have a show ... over 160 quilts, plus 35 heritage quilts, plus several flimsies. The tea room was outside, and at the edge of a butterfly garden! All the tea tables had table topers in the centres to add to the atmosphere! Well done, for a first show!!!

I see I have a lot of threads to catch up on with GGal now posting her FWS' ... and of course others, and the PC threads too.

Gradually, I'll be back ....... I miss youuuuuuuuuuu!!!!!!!!!

You are never forgotten. Take care of yourself. Let's see...red ribbons this weekend? We're cheering for you!

JeanieG 06-08-2012 08:02 PM

We have definitely missed you QuiltE! Hope things calm down soon so you can rejoin us!

mirabelle 06-08-2012 09:23 PM

So glad to have you back with us QuiltE

Termi 06-09-2012 02:36 PM

I was wondering where you were QuiltE. I've missed seeing your beautiful blocks each week. sorry about your back.
Good to hear from you!!

dublb 06-09-2012 06:51 PM

Some how I didn't git this thread subscribed to. I remember goin' & findin' it but wasn't gittin any e-mails for it.
I too have back trouble! Last year I broke down & had an epidural. Wow, what a difference. Don't git me wrong I still have some minor pain & can't do anything too long but I can live my life again. I'd do it again in a heart beat.
So who's got the marshmallows?

Aw shucks, everyone ... it's nice to feel missed ....... and wanted! :)
And to answer your question about the red ribbons ... yes!!!!!! :D I managed to get back into the hall, and get a few pics on Friday night, before I got kicked out! You see, they didn't have things fully set up, and didn't want the public in the building yet. I saw the main ones ..... my quilts, all three got reds/firsts!!!! The other miscellany, I'll know after I'm back to the fair tomorrow!

This one you're quite familiar with already ....... it was entered in the pieced by one person, LAQ by another, judged only on the piecing ....

The green and purple one is mine and the class was "unfinished top, ready for quilting). It's the BCS mystery that I've been working on. I was quite shocked to see the red ribbon on it, as the one to the right of it was a Country Bride, appliqued quilt with embroidery, plus prairie points. I saw it opened up when we were delivering our quilts, and OMG it was stunning. I'm sure it will be back next year as a finished quilt. Mine is so simple in comparison, I sure never expected to be placed ahead of it.

Mine is the white sampler in the centre, and the class "pieced by one person, hand quilted by another". It's 25 sampler blocks, mostly from the Eleanor Burns books.

That's my three quilts I took, well, here's a 4th one ... that Little Mini that I just did recently. I was pretty proud of it, and to have the mini quilt rack too. Take a look to the left at the other mini and quilt rack ... it was in a counted cross stitch class, andwas done as a mini-quilt, complete with an even tinier quilt rack than mine! Mine was in a miniature quilt class.

So, that's the preliminary results ... I had 16 entries! The rest are miscellaneous sewing/quilting related things ... I chose whatever I had that fit the classes. When I was there, it was all confusing ... as they didn't have them all set up and in place yet. So, hard to find my entries ... and to see what else was in the same classes. I'm pleased ... very pleased with what I saw on Friday night. :D And yes, I've beamed all weekend!!!! :D

**blush**
Thank you JeanieG!!!!
**and blush some more!!!**

They had more entries this year, than they have had in a long time ... wonder what that says about the art of quilting? And especially so, that this is no longer a true rural area ... yes rural, but highly influenced by the urban sprawl, with many in the countryside who are very far from the farm, even though living amidst the farms!!!!! :) With the more entries, the display space was very crowded, so as you can see, unfortunately, the quilts did not get much chance to show themselves off! :D

And oh ... how could I forget Miss Mazel ...... yes, she claimed another first!!!!!! I didn't get a pic, but here's one I took before ...

Whoo-Hoo! We have a celebrity among us! Way ta go QE! We are proud of you!

oksewglad 06-09-2012 08:10 PM

Hip Hip Hooray! Hip Hip Hooray! Hip Hip Hooray! for Quilt E!!! Congratulations on all counts.

I was surprised to see Miss Mazel. Most of our local fairs require quilts to be completed in the last year.

janRN 06-10-2012 04:37 AM

Well done QuiltE--we all know how talented you are, now others know, too. Congratulations--they are all beautiful!

gardnergal970 06-10-2012 04:52 AM

QuiltE...love all the red! Congratulations! I will doubly pay attention to your comments on blocks. Keep them coming.

QuiltE 06-10-2012 05:47 AM

Good Grief ... I had a post all typed and went to post and it went poof! .... whyyyyyy?
Let's try this again!! :)

Thanks everyone for all your kind words .... I enjoy the showing not so much to "beat" others, but to learn more and to see how my work measures up. It's one of the few opportunities I have to see my work alongside others. And too, to see IRL how others do things, colour combos, ideas (not that I need more!). I especially like it when a Judge leaves a comment on the back of my card, so I can learn something more.

GGal ... oh please pay little attention to me! We have a lot of better skilled quilters around our PC campfires and throughout the QB than I am or ever will be. What I know has come from others sharing IRL and here on the QB. I have learned ever SO much since discovering the QB last April and am so thankful for the opportunity to be amidst so many talented people.

OKSGlad ... Most of our fairs allow for a 2 year window, as did this one .... thus Miss Mazel had eligibility! Some are only for one year, and some don't specify. It's a little frustrating and tedious, as all the fairs belong to the same association, OAAS, yet they all may have different rules or interpretations of them. Sometimes the different rules are so they can encourage more entries.

For example, most of the fairs and their classes are for quilts pieced and quilted by the same person, with specific classes to types of piecing and/opr quilting. Usually those fairs will have one class for handquilted by someone else, also LAQ, as was this fair, and we must show the quilter's name on the entry tag. Thus I am limited, being that so far I have had my larger quilts done by others. One of the fairs I show at in the fall, a few years ago recognized they were getting few quilt entries as many were not quilting their own. So they opened it up and now they have an incredible show of quilts ... even better because all of their quilts are hung out fully.

The size requirements are easy to figure out ... sometimes they give length/width, though now most give total outside measurements minimum/maximum. Interpreting definitions "wall hanging", "centrepiece", "fibre", "needlework" are a few that create confusion .... and yes, each fair, each judge, and even different members of the same fair committee, may have a different definition. Sure makes it a little frustrating when you're trying to figure out whether to enter an item or not ... or what class to enter it in!

Another little difference I've noticed here in other QB discussions ... most always we are required to include samples of the fabrics used (likewise for knitting/crocheting). So after having to scramble to find these in the past, I've now learned to keep samples when making things if there's even a remote chance I might show it. Much less stress to just have to trim them up when the time comes. And yes, you've guessed it, each seem to have a different "rule" on the size of those samples! Fairs that will be hanging the quilts, require a 4" rod pocket. These may be sewn on or with safety pins ... so I have a massive collection of those, and what a tedious job that becomes! :)

I should add ... you don't get rich when showing here. Often under $10 for a first prize, the most I've received was $25. Sometimes there are extra prizes for example: most points in a section; new entrant with most entries in a section; judge's choice; special classes sponsored by outside groups/individuals (that's the yellow ribbons you'll see along with the reds). Then out of that "big" income :D ... your mileage for two trips to the fair, your time to do so, fair admissions (of course, you have to go to the fair to see the results and check the other entries) .... and all that frustrating time at home trying to interpret all the rules! It's all worth it in the non-$$ rewards!!!! :D

I hope that gives all of you a little idea about showing at our Ontario Fairs.
And too, I hope others will tell us a little about their showing experiences and requirements.

Termi 06-10-2012 07:55 AM

WOW!!!! QuiltE, you've been busy. They're all gorgeous. I especially like the mini quilt. Congratulations and good luck on the rest of your entries.

QuiltingNinaSue 06-10-2012 08:43 AM

Wow, I am so impressed. QuiltE!!! 16 entries and we all know how much work that was!! And your work is note worthy of the 'red' ribbon first place by the judges there. Me, I would award you the best of show the most red of the show and know everyone of the 16 were worthy of the award.

Thanks for all the knowledge about Canada Fairs...its easy to imagine being there from your descriptions. Love all the photos and hope you get the time to post more...love those quilt pictures!!! And its nice to have you back with us. You were indeed missed on QB and email.

dublb 06-10-2012 12:12 PM

QE - I wanted ta comment to your comment about the board. :) When I first joined here I spent so much time readin & learnin'. I feel like I've been ta quiltin' college jammed packed into 2 years.

mirabelle 06-10-2012 02:55 PM

Oh QuiltE I knew there was going to be a lot of "red" in your future. Well done, your quilts are beautiful and the ribbons are so deserved...

QuiltE 06-11-2012 08:04 AM

Thanks again everyone!! ...

Now today I'm trying to get back into the work groove, and digging out from the mass confusion of the past week. When life is crazy-hectic-busy, I have a bad drop-itis habit, so now to dig out of that mess!!! Add to that, it's 32°C ... and of course, the humidex makes it seem much higher. Was out of the office for some appts this morning and that wasn't so bad as a/c everywhere including my truck. This afternoon, not so lucky ... no a/c in my home/office. UGH!! There is good news in that bgad ... my basement stays nice and cool most of the time, and so at times like this, I often seek refuge there, and you know what I do in my basement!!!!!!!!!!! :D

dublb 06-11-2012 11:47 AM

It's hot here 106*F yesterday & supposed ta git that hot again taday.

QuiltE 06-11-2012 01:13 PM

DublB .. I'm not at all envious and pleeeeeeeeeeease do not send it northwards!
I was thinking some more about your cramming College Quilting Degree via the QB... good call!!! I often say that it's my Guild, but I think you're bang on ... plus at times we behave like college kids! :D

dublb 06-11-2012 02:57 PM

We do act up don't we!:D

deranged_damsel 06-12-2012 05:39 AM

!!!YAY!!!! That is so great! Good job! :D :D :D Beautiful quilts! I can see why they won!

carriem 06-12-2012 09:32 AM

QuiltE--I thought I had replied but just looked through and don't see anything from me. :) Great quilts that you took to Fair! Congrats on all the ribbons.

QuiltE 06-12-2012 02:00 PM

Again, everyone, many thanks for all your kind words. And again, I don't see myself as any better than the rest of you! I'm continually amazed at the talent and skill of all our PC riders. Also, the number who have been quilting a short time and turning out wonderful work ... I can only imagine what you will be achieving in a few more years!!

P.S. QNSue ... I'd really like to make some Buffalo Chip Cookies in the next few days!! Hint! Hint! Hint! :D

mirabelle 06-13-2012 04:27 AM

OK so what are Buffalo Chip Cookies ???????

Now that's a question only :D QNSue :D can answer ....... with a recipe of course!

She did tease us in another thread ...... 3 kinds of chipits, corn flakes, and more goodies ...... and made cow patty size, I believe!

QuiltingNinaSue 06-13-2012 10:36 AM

The recipe shows the Texan sense of humor 'cause they made a cookie that looks like a cow patty, the kind we had to avoid in the barnyard. And the original recipe makes up a Texas Big amount of cookies and it is copyrighted so I cannot post the original recipe, but you can use your imagination on how it looks. and tastes so good....mmmmm.

Like most quilters and cooks, I have my own version of it...and it can be made in your own version..pm me.,,,for limited samples free. I do not want to mess with Texas or Texans on copyright issues on QB. And I will try to avoid "putting my foot in my mouth" in the future...maybe.

dublb 06-13-2012 10:50 AM
