The FWS Pony Club Quilt-Along wk 41 Floral Bouquet & Seminole Square Discussion Page

Another week into our journey....after this week we only have 8 blocks left to do...more or less... i have more than 8 to do so don't any of you that have alot don't feel bad...I'm right there with you...I'm almost done with the Bouquet block...I'm not sure I'm going to like doing the seminole block....any thoughts anyone???

QuiltE 10-16-2012 07:41 PM

All right Ladies ... being that I'm going to be out of town the first couple weeks of November, I am thinking ahead of something to take and work at in my hotel room at nights. NO, I am NOT taking my sewing machine. It needs to be soemthing mindless ...

I want your suggestions as to what to take ... here's a start ...
** possibly GFG ... have never done it, am I idiotic to think of working on that? do you use regular paper templates? or more of a cardstock?
** knitting ... something simple like scarves for charity for Christmas
** more??

*scratch* counted cross stitch was my first thought ... than I started looking at patterns and I got cross-eyed!!!!!

oksewglad 10-16-2012 07:52 PM

Oh dear QE whip up some minis and then save the bindings for this time!

Honchey 10-16-2012 08:33 PM

QE, I use the reply cards from the magazines I get...you know ...the ones that fall out or tear out.....I have a bag of 500 3" ones all basted...now just to put them together...I did most of them when recuperating from Knee replacement surgery...There's a website that allows you to download & print the size shape you need..You could probably print on cardstock then pass the time cutting them out...when you cut the fabric for them make sure the seam allowance is more than 1/4"..1/3" is best...

mirabelle 10-16-2012 11:04 PM

QuiltE I have started a GFG more than 3 years ago, just need to do the borders but I got tired of it as it is so repetitive.
Do you crochet, how about a knee rug, keeps you warm while you are making it. I am making my son one, have over 100 rows finished and am desperate to get it finished before the hot weather hits.
I like the sound of knitted scarves, very useful and wonderful gifts

QuiltingNinaSue 10-17-2012 04:14 AM

Crochet or knit is easy to carry; or the GFG English paper pieced is done by several here I know. They print the pattern out on their computer printers, cut them out and put them into little plastic bags to carry with them.

The roaming little cowboy is the story of my Father who was orphaned at an early age when his parents both died; no one wanted him, he was too young to work the heavy farm work. Story did not change much, his life seemed almost to be cursed by a witch back in his lineage. His older sister got married and took him in...about when he was 17 or so..but took his paycheck every week for room and board. Married my Mother for limited joy of five years, then into WWII, to escape the 'hell' in the home, earned the purple heart but ended up in the military hospital for over a year. Is buried on the West Coast all by himself. Sad story, no happy ending, sorry. No one wanted Mother from birth, either, (her Father died, Mother had mental break down) and have felt the same at times, but led a much happier life than what they had. At least, have dh to share life with...and had three children who do not live close at all...and have their own lives to live.

Thank goodness for QB and the PC folks that chatter like they do!!! Love it.

QuiltE 10-17-2012 05:30 AM

OKSGlad ... Funny enough, last night, I had that flash, and wondered if I could manage to finish a wall hanging and then bind it. And here you are suggesting I start something NEW? :) I thought you'd be telling me to do some PC blocks instead! :)

Crocheting and Knitting I did oodles in the past. When I was married, I crocheted a lace table cloth for my dining room table! Ambitious young soul, wasn't I? :) Other than straight knitting, I never learned any of the extras til after marriage ... then there were a few years that I went wild on argyles, socks, mitts, and multi coloured patterned designs etc. One year, all 9 nieces/nephews got sweaters done in intricate designs and colours. They were supposed to pass them around ... I kind of doubt that ever happened! :) I still have many mini socks, toques and mitts I did for the Christmas tree (about 2 or3")!! Haven't done any C/K of any account since I had problems with my eyes and while I want to ... I'm hesitant! Of course, I had convinced myself I could not sew, too! :D

GFGs ... what size is reasonable to work with? I did find the online printouts last night ... www.texasfreckles.com 1" and 1-1/2"

QNSue ... what a sad back story in your family ... and I'm so proud of you for making your life what it is. And better still, that you are here and share with us. My parents are gone and my family are somewhat distanced now. My husband's well, I get one Christmas card from his only brother/SIL and not a peep from them otherwise or from the rest of the extendeds. MIL is in a nursing home and I oft wonder if I will be told when she passes? or not? So now you often hear me speak of my "adopted" family who are so good to me, though it still pulls at my ♥ strings that I have no ties, really.

So for me "special" friends and my "adopted" family have much more meaning now to me than the blood family ... and you Ladies are right there in my special world. I am EVER SO THANKFUL!!! Bless each of you for being YOU! :)

Honchey 10-17-2012 06:25 AM

Go with the larger template...the real little ones take forever....

Good thought!
but of course not as showy as the micros.

And you know OKSGlad ... will probably show up and suggest 1/2"!! :)

oksewglad 10-17-2012 07:12 AM

And you know OKSGlad ... will probably show up and suggest 1/2"!!

Moi, never!! Although I've always wanted to do a GMFG--maybe I can save that project until I'm "older"

deranged_damsel 10-17-2012 07:22 AM

I did a GFG last year :D I used a web site for the templates and printed on card stock. I used a jelly roll, I thought it made it simpler.

I Knit and Crochet as well, the Lionbrandyarn website has alot of great patterns

HAVE FUN :D :D :D

ps
the quiltinaday website has a special on 6x24 ruler, factory seconds! if yall are interested :D

carriem 10-17-2012 07:56 AM

I have a friend who is working on a GFG...she says it will be her "nursing home project" since she'll never get it done with all the other things she needs todo. I think she is using 1 1/2".

I have done crochet since I was little...my great grandmother taught me when I was less than 10 how to just do a chain. Then after I got married (at 18) I visited her with my oldest dd to get "lessons" on reading patterns and learning new stitches. She would have been 91 or 92 (died at 93 less than a month after our 2nd child was born). Probably a year or so after Gr. Grandma died, my grandma gave me Gr G'ma's crochet hooks and the book I learned from...these things are very special to me and I am SO glad that I took the time to spend a few hours each week with her during her last few years. I know that she was happy to visit and see her great-great granddaughter too!

Probably 5 yrs ago I taught myself how to knit. I started a scarf but never finished it. My youngest dd has been crocheting and we were looking for some more yarn and I came across it...I couldn't remember how to knit, so will have to find the book and re-learn!

dublb 10-17-2012 09:03 AM

I'm doin' a GMF. It is my waitin' or travelin' quilt. I never work on it at home. I starch my squares around the hex's. When I need to, I can take a hex template out ,then back in, for ease o' sewin' some o' the other hexes. Hmmm I don't think I'm makin' any since here. I don't trim the edges o' my squares & don't intend to. By the time I finish this I won't feel like hand quiltin' it anyway. My Hex.'s are 2 1/4 ". I figure it will take me years ta finish it. I'm thinkin' o' takin' a break & doin' a hand quilt for a little while. These I also don't do at home, most o' the time.
PS I have been known ta take a sewin' machine ta a hotel room.

Boy, Quilte you really started some chatter. You wouldn't have to make an entire GMF. It's like eating an elephant...one bite at a time. Start with one block and see is the flower grows. It is a nice way to use up scraps...just stay consistent in each flower. This is one of my favorite blocks. I actually have some that my DGM pieced oh so many years ago that my DD has spoken for since she knows I probably won't finish them. That's because they are hand pieced and nothing quite fits if you know what I mean. OKSewglad, I did see one made with three quarter or inch pieces. It was stunning to say the least.
I appreciate all your comments on the 7700 but today I took the car to the shop and there was a family emergency and both came to more than half the cost of the machine which really underscored my decision not to buy it. At this point in my life, the last thing I need is debt.
Here is the promised pic of my FART on Monday. I really enjoyed laying them out again. At the shop there is always the nagging question about choices but this morning without that, I got really excited about how they look together. The piece in the background is the background so there will be a lot of that. The only 2 that aren't KT are the right light prints which I need for the Log Cabin setting blocks. There is nothing really light in the KT line!!!

dublb 10-17-2012 10:26 AM

GG - Aren't ya glad ya waited ta buy that machine? It wasn't meant for ya. There will be somethin' down the road for you. I love your fabrics. They will make a great Log Cabin!

 Oh Oh ... are you calling moi oooooooooooooold?

QuiltingNinaSue 10-17-2012 05:50 PM

GG has beautiful new fabric to touch and feel and plan into a new project; Oksewglad has a whole new clean and clear look out her windows; Quilte has dreams of a bag and carry project.

Honchey is wondering about the Seminole block, but it was not hard to do. My Great Great Grandmother (on Mother's side of the family) Clarissa America Hodges Harper was a Seminole Indian. She was about four foot tall...dark skinned. She and her husband, Benjamin Franklin Harper had 15 children. He traded horses, going on trips to trade for more, and worked with leather harnesses and halters.

We have the happiest ducks in, the country... we moved them into our yard away from those terrible turkeys. They will be in the shed with the guineas this winter. Guineas are misbehaving, flying into the chicken yard, hay field behind us and greeting me at the driveway gate...sitting on top of of the gate and being very noisy. Why we are asking ourselves did we want turkeys and guineas on the place??? I am thinking of a neighborhood BarBque and serving up guineas.:p:thumbup:

QuiltE 10-17-2012 06:08 PM

And the ducks are just sitting and smiling at the turks and saying hahahahaha ... we're saved, YOU die! :)
Remind those guineas that they have a choice ... be like the darling ducks or live the life of the turks!! :D

</SPAN></SPAN>
½ cup packed brown sugar
</SPAN></SPAN>
½ cup peanut butter

1 egg
</SPAN></SPAN>
1-½ tsp. vanilla
</SPAN></SPAN>

Gradually beat in flour mixture.
</SPAN></SPAN>

Add and mix in ...
</SPAN></SPAN>
1 cup chocolate chips ( or six squares semi-sweet chocolate, coarsely chopped)

Bake at 375F for 10-12 minutes or til lightly browned.

Well, QNSue did say the ducks got a reprieve til next year .... to go forth and produce ... and multiply! :)

Honchey ... are you quack-ing up? :D

mirabelle 10-17-2012 08:59 PM

QuiltE thanks for the recipe might have to try it, I have everything except for the chocolate, I try not to have it in the house, although I have stumbled across DH's little hidden stash:D

dublb 10-17-2012 09:15 PM

I saved the recipe. DSon & DD will like it.
I tried workin' on my Cowboy's Star tanight & think I got it. I did it different.

QuiltingNinaSue 10-18-2012 04:04 AM

Love the recipe; make one almost like that. More ducks next spring...laying ducks. Love that $6.00 a dozen for eggs. Love to get dozen or two every day, 'cause now I found customers!!

Deep freeze is over flowing, so no kill policy here for ? long. Every one have a very good day...its a new day!!

........ or kill and instead of the freezer ... direct to the oven!
I could eat turkey all the time ... well not quite, as I would still need my beef!!
Customers are good ... cash crop! And maybe they'd like one of those turkeys too?
... reminds me of the Eleanor Burns' book, Egg Money Quilts :)
Took a break from your Buffalo Chip Cookies ... they've been a hit and I've pretty much tossed in anything I had around. I like the corn flake twist.

MiraB ... What I liked about these were the not so peanut-buttery taste. Just enough to enjoy, but not overwhelm. Found it on the Kraft site.

DublB ... DGS will too! :) Looking forward to seeing your Cowboy's Star!

QuiltingNinaSue 10-18-2012 07:31 AM

Have the whole (almost!) Eleanor Burns collection of books including the egg money quilts. And Maria Mitchell's books and templates. Two medium sized book cases of quilt books, two large sized book cases of cook books.

Small and large freezer in garage that is full up to the lid (half of a beef...360 pounds of it!!) and propane tank is filled, so ready for winter and paying of taxes in December...that last always ruins our Christmas...and prevents us from doing any celebration of the holidays.

Peeled and cored the last tomatoes of the season; had my last tomato and bacon sandwich. Deviled dozen eggs, and put a round roast of beef in crock pot for later. Now off to the quilt room to try again. First time this morning I sat down, took the template pieces out of the plastic bag, and promptly lost a piece of the block without moving an inch!! Then the roof of the school house was sewn on wrong side out!! May leave it that way. Ripped out yesterday on a piece (four times) I finally starched heavy duty to get it to sew in right in Verna's favorite block.

Keeping on smiling and keep people wondering what you are up too!!!

carriem 10-18-2012 08:00 AM

Ggal--like those fabrics! Can't wait to see what you do with them. :)

I have the house clean and everything thing ready for my retreat...we even got school done this morning! I leave in just one hour. Crystal and I are going early to set tables up, get name cards and retreat gifts all ready...plus to have a bit of quiet time before everyone else shows up starting at 4pm. We have 24 total coming this weekend! Most are scrapbookers, but there a a few quilters too. It started as a scrapbooking retreat, but since I have been quilting at them others have decided to do the same. We have tried inviting some other quilters too, but the weekend just hasn't worked into their schedules.

Hope everyone has a great weekend!!

Honchey 10-18-2012 08:33 AM

You are all too funny....especially you QE...I stopped at the LQS and there I found such a simple block to do for the bonus and I don't even need a pattern for it... I am going to use bits of whatever I have left from the PC and incorporate them into the block. I think I may have found the right color for the sashing...I purchased the brown from Moda and now I don't like it...
I'm going to DE next week to visit my sister...I need a haircut...She is a hairdresser (retired)...I always get eggs from the Amish when I'm in DE ..they are so much fresher and have a better taste then the store bought...I even get the raw milk from them...you know with the cream on top...it makes the store bought taste thin... I feel so much better knowing what I'm going to do for the bonus...I do have some Moda roses for Mirabelle's block...Now I have to go to EQ to make a pattern for the block...part of it will be pp'd. see ya later, H.

QuiltingNinaSue 10-18-2012 09:05 AM

Have fun with your sister, H. Fresh eggs, too, joy!! Yes, QuiltE, I may sell a turkey or two on the hoof...(feet) Live. They are pets and are so gentle except with other fowl. Carrie, good luck on your retreat, may it be a good one for you.

Winterizing the house a bit more, trying to stop the wind from blowing in as it has since we moved into this all steel house. No code to meet, so they just put it up in a hurry...9 nine weeks and it was done....By one guy mostly.

All PC blocks are done. Now to photograph, put into the computer file, and do the stashing on the blocks and think about the extended blocks. Finishing gs wildlife quilt, and other UFOs.

dublb 10-18-2012 09:41 AM

Ooops I Got my block names mixed up. I was doin' Elsie's Favorite last night. All I have left ta do is cut it down & take picts o' the finished block.

While I don't want winter ... I do enjoy winter ... that is, if it's Christmas card perfect winter! :)

QNSue ... looks ike you and DH will be able to eat quite well this winter! Any idea how big are those turks now?

CarrieM
... another retreat! Wow! Have fun!

Honchey ... honestly, I am not at all funny! Yea for "needing" to get your hair cut ... and some sister time! Good for you for plans on your blocks. I think I have mine figured out.

Will be interesting to see if we have any duplicates in the blocks!

QuiltingNinaSue 10-19-2012 04:14 AM

QuiltE, we think the Toms are in the 25 to 35 pound group; the hens, a lesser amount, probably 18 to 25 pounds now. A big problem to dip into hot water and pick or we could skin the bird...have the big tub to use. No more than one in a day, 'cause we do not have the strength or energy to do more than that. Probably do the Toms first, then the hens.

QuiltE 10-19-2012 04:28 AM

....... and to say the least ... the oven space!

Yes, get those big boys first ... my neighbour had some a few years ago, and kept leaving them, just to get bigger. After all, he figured, with all those feathers, there wasn't much bird underneath. Well, when the time came, the bird wouldn't fit in the oven, and so as we ate, the rest was in the oven cooking!!It was mighty good eating!!

When are you going to ENJOY the first? mmmmmmmm!

dublb 10-19-2012 10:46 AM

Some o' my sister's chickens have started ta eat her eggs. She has started ta glean them out & plans ta eat 'em. Her DH hasn't wanted ta kill 'em. It says it takes too much time that he doesn't have. LOL. I bet he'll git around to it soon. He is a preacher & has another full time job.

QuiltingNinaSue 10-19-2012 12:07 PM

Dublb, the chickens are short a mineral; need to get grit & oyster shell for them, too, to make the shells harder. Our Orscheln Farm Store has a block of mineral for free ranging chickens, ducks and turkeys that I got might help them. Also, collect the eggs through out the day. Never give them scraps with egg shells in it...save the egg shells for the garden, it helps the soil.

Yep, I am happy with the beef that cost us $2.30 a pound...it will go along way into the winter and spring.

QuiltingNinaSue 10-19-2012 12:08 PM

Listen for hen crackle, then run and collect the egg!!

QuiltE 10-19-2012 02:34 PM

Same diagnosis as I was going to make, QNSue!

DublB ... yup, eating their eggs, shows they need the grit or oyster shell!

It makes me smile, thinking of all the different topics we cover here in our threads!
Can you just imagine what it;d be like if we were ever to gather IRL?
OMG ........ it'd be unbelievable! :D

dublb 10-19-2012 02:35 PM

She said that she does give 'em that mineral. At first she didn't & these egg eaters are some o' the first batch. I guess they got a taste for 'em. Her kids go & gather eggs 3 times a day. They now have about 50 chickens. They have about a half acre just for the chickens. (They live on 2 acres.)
