THE FWS PONY CLUB Quilt-Along Wk 6 Broken Heart & Boy's Playmate Discussion Page

I'm so glad the distractions of last week are over with.....Go GIANTS!!! Yeah! and now I'm trying to clean up from my grandson's birthday party which was also on Sunday.....balloons all over the place...

I found Boy's Playmate very easy to do and now I have to find some broken heart fabric...being Valentine's day is just around the corner I'm tempted to do it in red and white....this block reminds me of one or two from the first Quilt-Along... I didn't like making them very much.

Our group is moving along really great...can't wait to see some blocks !!! Honchey

dublb 02-07-2012 07:56 PM

Love those B-day parties! Fun! Red & white sounds good.

oksewglad 02-07-2012 08:18 PM

I just finished Broken Heart and I'm done for the night with it! Was very frustrating for me.

QuiltE 02-07-2012 09:02 PM

Just for you
Honchey .......
Under the B .......... 42
Under the G ...............4

Go ahead .... admit it, you're missing it tonight! :)

I was tempted to use my Valentine's fabric that I'd used in FWS ... just didn't feel that it fit the theme.
I'm sure I'll regret it!

OKSGlad ... you got the tough and slow one done .... Boy's Playmate goes quite fast!

oksewglad 02-07-2012 09:11 PM

When I started I meant to have my darks and lights reversed, but cut my triangles wrong and not wanting to waste fabric, I changed plans. I had already marked d (for dark) on my paper patterns so that confused me the whole time. I con't know how many times I sewed and frog stitched. Glad that one's done. Going to pick fabric for the Boy's Playmate. Then call it a night.

QuiltE 02-07-2012 09:15 PM

OKSGlad ... you'll have Boy's Playmate sewn up in no time tomorrow!

**Here's a Hint** ... I code my PP using highlighters according to the colour of fabric I want in the section.

I find it easier than looking at printing (eg. D for Dark ... and then switching it up!)
Of course, it's not foolproof for this ol' fool ... but I do find it easier to just see the colour and try to grab the right colour of fabric! :)

And guess what? I looked ahead at next week's ... UGH! circle and templates!! UGH! At least it's partner is an easy one!

DublB ... Thanks for to you, I started the thread with the Alphabet Soup of Acronyms and Quilters Dictionary!

Anael 02-07-2012 11:30 PM

Next week's Bird Eye's View is not that hard, the curves aren't tiny so there's enough room for lots of pins! The middle part is applique. I'm not too fond of curves either but this one went together smoothly.

mirabelle 02-07-2012 11:45 PM

QuiltE I just finished Birds Eye View and it went together really easy. I just clipped the concave curve about 1/8 inch in and pinned in the centre and lined up the side seams. ssshhhh I have next weeks blocks finished don't tell anyone

janRN 02-08-2012 05:25 AM

Did anyone use the templates to make Broken Heart? I tried 3 times and had the same problem each time-the outer 4 "heart" sections were too big. I was wondering if there was an error in the template size or just me. Thanks to Anael & QE I bit the bullet and paper pieced. I have to replace one outer triange that I cut too short on one side but it went together pretty easy pping. Thanks again for the help. I love this group!!

gardnergal970 02-08-2012 05:47 AM

JanR...after you noted that you had trouble with the templates, I carefully measured them against the line drawing and the outer heart diagonal piece was just a smidge longer for the trmplates so I didn't try to use them. I thought I would try freezer paper but those little triangles were unruly so I went to paper piecing. I expected that I might meet Miss Froggy there but she brought along Mr.s Wrong Side Up, Can't Reverse Thinking, You Cut It Too Small, and Not Enough Fabric! What unwelcome intruders. You'll see what I had to do when I post the pictures. I wasn't about to do the flying geese again. I thought I had them vanquished for the day when the Boy's Best Friend went together like a breeze but they were just hiding in my Civil War Quilt! They just wouldn't go away so I finally quit for the day but Miss Froggy is waiting this morning before I can do anything else. What a way to start the day.

Honchey 02-08-2012 07:14 AM

Guys, When PPing I used to just mark the sections with pencil...then I got smart and started using the Crayola colored pencils that I originally bought for my grandchildren..They are more into crashing cars & trucks than coloring. there are 24 colors in a box..No more confusion...When PPing alot of little triangles...I cut strips the length of the fabric I'm using generally on the straight grain and the width 1/2 " wider than the size needed..I find there's less waste that way.

dublb 02-08-2012 07:42 AM

Hey ya'll, I started PP!!
Mon. night I did the A section of Broken Heart. When I finished I realized that I had the seam allowance too small! I redid it again last night, & got it right! I looks great, now ta do the rest. I plan ta sew all afternoon today!

JanieW 02-08-2012 08:10 AM

Broken heart just about did me in. I was so pleased when I found a dark green in the stash to match the toile to do this block. There wasn't much of it, but enough. Then I promptly wrote on the back of the paper where to put the dark, but I did it exactly backwards. So I followed my incorrect markings correctly ,made the flying geese sections, went to put them together with the corner squares, realized they were wrong. So I had to pick out the tiny pp stitches as I needed to salvage the dark green. Ack.

After that, Boy's Playmate was a walk in the park.

dublb 02-08-2012 08:38 AM

After looking at the photos I realize where the hearts are & have decided ta my switch my fabrics. I guess I'll start over! Boy am I glad that I've only finished 1 section! A good place ta start over.

I'm laughing here; glad you have a great sense of humor!

Yeah, I'm doing something right, Honchey. I cut strips like you suggest and then used my Easy Angle and Companion Angle rulers to cut the triangles depending on where I wanted the grain line to be. Thanks for the color tip, H and QE.

QuiltingNinaSue 02-08-2012 10:48 AM

I am highly frustrated because I finished my blocks, put them into Picaso (I think) but cannot find them again to post here. Lettering on this new Dell and System 7 windows is too small. Sp I am eating chocolate and thinking. Instead picture files (FWPQ) are dupicating themselves worse than rabbits. Love what has been posted here.

I remember almost how to get into the programming and increase the size of the text; tried repeated though personcalize on right click and that does not do the trick. Any suggestions here? Maybe I can rember in a week or two.

QuiltingNinaSue 02-08-2012 12:32 PM

Finally, with dh help traced down where the photo was and it worked to post. Like the blind leading the blind. Must eat more carrots, cannot see with my one eye very well today. Hope for tomorrow and better day than today.

Love all the posted blocks. Just had to use my valentine cloth and put a broken heart (s) into my block.

dublb 02-08-2012 12:40 PM

I'm so glad ya figured it out!

gardnergal970 02-08-2012 02:56 PM

About the Bird's Eye next week, I found when I did my circles that if i had the circle on top of the cut out background and made sure I had the centers of each piece matched and pinned and kept the square edge of the block square, the 1/4 inch seam allowed for it to be eased without a problem. This is probably as clear as mud but don't be afraid of the Bird's Eye. It's much easier than the flying geese that were in the Broken Heart!

QuiltingNinaSue 02-08-2012 05:40 PM

I do my flying geese the way Alex Alexander and R. Tibbs show on U-Tube as the English way...making a little "book" out the the "covers" of side color and fold an oblong fabric piece right side up between the layers of the "book", sew on one side and open up to be a "flying geese" made. Love it.

Can you post the link to this please??

QNS- is the method?
http://www.youtube.com/watch?v=78Mu0C_QL8Y
I've wondered if they really worked.

QuiltingNinaSue 02-09-2012 06:24 AM

It was posted on QB last year; figured a search on QB or y-tube would work. I do more trial and error than I do the math formula. FWSQ had cup & saucer block which I did it that way and loved it. Displayed an 18 inch block at the LQS of the method and they loved it. You have to visualize a "book" the sides are a square(2 1/2" or whatever), and you slip the oblong piece, the "goose" right side up, in between, allowing about 1/4 or little more at the top, about 2" folded over and side on just the right side. Open it up and you have your "flying geese". Adjust for desired size, and have fun zooming along with this method. Seeing with just one eye, this method seems easier to me than the Quilt in a Day way and other ways that I have seen. Good luck.

JanRN ... that's what I'm loving about these threads that we can all pitch in and help the other along the way. You for the Broken ♥. Me for the curves coming up. And more for all of us!

Thanks Everyone for the Bird's Eye View hints ... here we are discussing week 7 in week 6! I'm now going to try to have my blocks done a week in advance, so that if life gets in the way, I'm still on the trail!! I wasn't yo for the Bird's Eye challenge last night, and opted for the easy-peasy Bright Hopes. Even made it easier by PPing with the line drawing!

GGal ... looks like you had quite a crowd there!! No wonder you ran into problems with all that commotion going on. Hope they at least brought chocolate to nibble on!!! :)

DublB ... yeaaa for your maiden PPing! I thought I saw paper over there in the photo thread. :)

QNSue ... Looks like you had some gremlins creating challenges too ... and found some chocolate for solace!

OKSGlad ... I see that you're finding your PP style! <CLAP><CLAP><CLAP>:)

janRN 02-09-2012 08:47 AM

QE I work a week ahead; never know what's going to happen with my mother. I didn't do set in seams on Bright Hopes. Look at the block: if you split one of the long rectangles into 2 squares it goes together like a 9 patch (or 7 patch in this case.) Please don't tell the Quilt Sherrif!!!!!

Hope that things perk along OK with your Mom! And how's Patches doing now?

For Bright Hopes ... I did a partial seam on the first rectangle, then the next 3 for full seams ... then finished off that first seam at the end. I had lots of practice in those partial seams when I did my Double Rose Trellis quilt! :)

Anael 02-09-2012 09:23 AM

QuiltE, that's how I did Bright Hopes too.

Glad I'm not the only one, Anael ... this PPing has made me lazy ... so when there wasn't a PP pattern I just "had" to make my own! :) And just for JanRN, there's some bling in mine!

I looked this up and it is really a slick trick! My question is now do you figure out the sizes of your fabric when you can make flying geese in so many sizes. Also do you ever trim out the background fabric? Three layers makes it bulky for quilting doesn't it?

No chocolate. It would have been nice but I'm gaining ground with losing weight and don't keep it in the house right now. Did have a Snickers thanks to my husband when we were out an about over the weekend though so I don't feel deprived.

Like this idea. I think we lost the Sherrif so tricks are encouraged.

QuiltingNinaSue 02-09-2012 11:06 AM

No, the cotton fabric in the flying geese are not "bulky". Its the Stack 'n Whack 6 point centers that try patience. Learned to stop 1/4 from end of seam and that helped. Then, there is the method that lets you take a hammer and pound on the bulk. Have fun. :)

Atta GGal!! ... I keep some of the Hershey Nuggets for when I need a chocolate fix ... small enough that they aren't too dangerous, and large enough I get the fix without feeling I need more ... and more ... and more!

JeanieG 02-09-2012 03:57 PM

I keep the new Simply Lite sugar free dark chocolate bars in my desk. I just need one square to satisfy my sweet tooth, they taste great - but what I like is no sugar! I try to keep my sugar intake down.

dublb 02-10-2012 02:53 PM

Hey Ya'll I'm sewing taday. I've sewn 4 more pieces of Broken Hearts. I started sewing the next ta last piece & I've sewn on it wrong 2 times. I'm taking a break! Sometimes that PP is confusing!

QuiltE 02-11-2012 09:45 PM

I already saw that you got it done DublB ... looks terrific.

Moi? ... Break for me from PC ... finished the binding on the Hospice Passage Quilt tonight. Now just need to get a label done. Getting frustrated over my search for the FWS sashing/border/binding fabric I want/need ... and that the LQS has not been able to get yet. Called about 30 stores today, to no avail ... so now am <pouting>!

Tomorrow, I'm hoping to tackle some more UFOs.

QuiltE 02-11-2012 10:22 PM

DublB ... Just wanted to make sure you saw this one ... inspiration?

Here's another pork and apple recipe ... it's absolutely delicious. It looks a little complicated, but really isn't. I make it and then love it as leftovers the next day. And possibly, like it even better then!

~~~~~~~~~~~~~~~~~~~~~~~~~~~~~~~~~~~~
Sage Rubbed Pork Chops with Apple Slaw
~~~~~~~~~~~~~~~~~~~~~~~~~~~~~~~~~~~~

NOTE: To make this quicker and easier you can use one 16-ounce bag of pre-shredded carrots and cabbage, called "Slaw Mix" instead of starting with whole cabbage and carrots. This dish can also be a one-pot-meal if you need to swap around. Just serve with some nice brown bread or whole-grain or whole-wheat bread.

For the chops:

1 Tablespoon chopped fresh sage or 1 teaspoon dried
1 large clove garlic, minced (about 1 teaspoon)
1 teaspoon salt
Freshly ground black pepper
4 (3/4-inch) bone-in pork loin chops (about 8 ounces each)
2 teaspoons olive oil

For the slaw:
2 teaspoons olive oil
1 large onion, cut in half, then thinly sliced into half-moons (I use more than one!)
1 large Granny Smith apple, cut in 1/2, cored and coarsely shredded
1 Tablespoon chopped fresh sage or 1 teaspoons dried
1/2 head green cabbage, cored and coarsely shredded (about 9 cups)
3 large carrots, coarsely shredded (about 3 cups)
2 tablespoons cider vinegar
teaspoon salt
3/4 cup low-sodium chicken broth

Combine the 1 Tablespoon of the fresh sage or 1 teaspoon dried, minced garlic, 1/2 teaspoon of salt and a few grinds of fresh pepper. Rub this mixture all over the pork chops and let the chops sit at room temperature for 10 minutes. Meanwhile, thinly slice the onion, grate apple, cabbage and the carrots.

Heat 2 teaspoons of the oil in a large non-stick frying pan until hot but not smoking. Add the chops and brown on both sides, 1 to 2 minutes per side. Remove the chops to a plate.

Carefully wipe out the pan. Heat 2 teaspoons oil over moderate heat and add the onion, apples and 1 teaspoon fresh sage or 1/2 teaspoon dried. Cook, stirring occasionally, until the mixture is soft and golden brown, 4 to 5 minutes. Add the cabbage, carrots, vinegar and 1/2 teaspoon salt and continue cooking until the cabbage and carrots begin to soften, about 5 minutes.

Add the broth and return pork chops to the pan burying them in the vegetable mixture. Cover and cook just until the pork chops are just slightly blush in the center, 5 to 7 minutes longer.

To serve, arrange the warm slaw on individual plates and top with a pork chop and pan juices.

Bon Appetit!!!
<o:p>

</o:p>
<o:p>OKSGlad </o:p><o:p></o:p><o:p>... I think we need to quit supporting the pork industry ... and start getting them onto beef and dairy recipes!! :)</o:p>
