GGal ... hey, I try! We could have a jolly good time! :)
OMG with your first and only experience. One reason why a private room would be a good idea! I like my space ... and for a get away, I would feel so much better to have a room to myself. Not that I don't like to be with others, just that after being with them all day ..... it'd take a pretty special friend for me to "want" to be with them all night. And to think she didn't take her CPap machine! YIKES!!!!!!!!! So a virtual retreat may be much "safer" for you!

Vrtual Retreat? ... who's interested?

CarrieM ... Looks like a great time is in store for one and all! Smart ladies, to add an extra day. A lot of planning for you and Crystal and I hope everyone appreciates all that you do to get ready for it. Good idea to mix the card making and quilting!!!! Be sure to take all your fabrics and have your PP printouts ready and waiting. So many things to take when you go for a retreat!

DublB ... Of course, we'll all fly in just to be with you. Good for you, for going the distance to meet up with the others. What a deal at $50! Are you taking PC .... or what will you work on?

Basic Net Collage ... I got my email reply with the details.
Yeppir it's chopped up pieces under tulle. And then enhanced with machine work. I'm thinking thread painting? though it doesn't call it that. Here's a link .... http://www.lroytextileart.com/statement.html
I'm a little hesitant ... as to whether she wants greenhorns? or someone who has more of a background?

QuiltingNinaSue 03-02-2012 04:24 PM

For those who enjoy a retreat, hope its everything you want it to be. Me, I am too dern old to sleep in a different bed other than my own at night. I might be an old grouch the next day. I, too, prefer a room to myself and my own bathroom, thank you. And not to miss Holmes on Homes on TV.

My dh little dogs got loose this morning...sad tale of woe again; no more chickens on the farm. And we will not replace then until we find the dogs new homes. Instead of protecting the hens, they finished them off. Not good. But I feel for the people in the path of the tornadoes today; they have some serious problems and more coming tonight.

janRN 03-02-2012 06:26 PM

I've never been to a retreat (or summer camp when young) but it sounds like fun. I'm with QNS though--I like sleeping in my own bed and knowing where the bathroom is in the middle of the night. QE, maybe a Virtual Retreat would be my style!
Ggal, thank you for the suggestion of a memory type quilt. Great idea and so thoughtful of you. You are so right that my mother's health problems, my sick dog, and my best friend starting chemo for ovarian cancer all crashed in on me and I guess I lumped all those things into the problems I was having with my quilt blocks. Thanks to QNS and all of you, I'm much more comfortable with my choices of fabric. Anne and QE pointed out to me that not all blocks are farm-related.
You guys are not just talented quilters but great people to hang around the campfire with!
QNS sorry about your chickens!

JeanieG 03-02-2012 07:20 PM

I've never been to a retreat either. I'm with QNS and Jan - I sleep really well in my bed at home and in the RV. I hate hotel rooms, they give me the creeps - hence we take the RV everywhere!

QNS - so sorry about your chickens. How awful! We had an Australian Shepherd when we had chickens, and she was just great with them.

oksewglad 03-02-2012 07:29 PM

Well this little chick is doing a Happy Dance! (No I did not escape the clutches of evil MO puppy dog! I was safe here in Iowa. So sorry about the chickens and there's no salvaging the meat either after a raid either. )
Back to the Happy Dance, except for the HS on the Bird's Eye View center I am all caught up. Going to post 2 more soon and will post 2 more later and maybe the whole shebang before the night is over. Then I will be out of site for a while. Our annual "meet with the Banker" confessional comes up on Tuesday and I have lots to be prepare yet. So off to posting some pics, riders.

QuiltE 03-02-2012 07:53 PM

You folks have taken me from happy to sad to laughing to ... counting my blessings!

Aren't we just the sorry bunch ... no retreats! :) I think we could have some fun for a virtual one.
**Tightens thinking cap*

QNSue ... Oh dear! So sorry for the demise of the chickens. The dogs are lucky to be left alive after that fiasco!!! What kind are they? so you like our Canuck-man Holmes!! :)

JanRN ... {{{{HUGS}}}} to you Missy! I really like GGal's suggestion to make Lemonade! Shop your stash for fabrics that have significance towards all. Even colours that are special to each. I'm sure that Patches will allow you to use his fabric!!! :) And if you don't have something that you want, ASK here ... and I bet one of us will have exactly what you want for a particular memory.

OKSGlad .. you're been motoring along!! CONGRATULATIONS!! Oh yes the dreaded banker annual confessionals. One part of dairy farming that I don't miss!! :) I can't wait to find those posts!

Tornadoes ... Just heard a bit tonight that they hit six States again today. Only one I heard them mention was Indiana. Hope you're OK GGal. I have friends from N Indiana that were wiped out years ago. This is where I was counting my blessings, knowing that no matter how bad things seem, I'm thankful to not have had to face the devastation a tornado brings. I know many who have over the years.

carriem 03-02-2012 07:57 PM

QuiltE---you asked about QAYG...the first one I did was called a 6-Hour Quilt by Kaye Wood (http://www.kayewood.com/item/6_Hour_...E_Book/406/c51) Since learning the "sandwich technique" I have finished most of my quilts this way by the "row" instead of building out from the middle like in the 6-hr pattern. I have tendonitis in my right elbow which when really flared up even bothers my wrist, so this is the best way for me to quilt....in little bits at a time.

I have another type of QAYG quilt started where you add sashing to connect the blocks...it is working well for the pattern I am doing because they are 24" blocks! This is the pattern (http://www.benartex.com/uploads/Imag...anillaskye.pdf). I can't find the link now of course. I will try to remember to take a picture of this one tomorrow.

I will share a picture when I finish the one I am making I just have one border left to add and binding tomorrow!

Carrie

carriem 03-02-2012 08:01 PM

We have a few at our retreats who snore...we try to put them in the same room. :)

How awful about the chickens! I hope you can find a good new home for the dogs.

dublb 03-02-2012 08:04 PM

I like the idea of a virtual retreat! It sounds great!
As for the retreat next weekend I'm having a hard time knowing what I want to take!! I still haven't done much on my cousins quilt. I've got to finish my DGS's Solar System quilt! Since right now I'm spending all of my quilting time making plates I will take this, & next weeks PC blocks. The March block for the Quilt Story BOM. I've got some charm packs & the Twister Tool, so I would like to play with those. I've also got a jelly roll that I'd like to play with!!! If I finish those I've only got 11 or 12 other UFOs that I can work on!!!
QNS - I'm so sorry that you lost your chickens!
Jan - I'm so sorry that you are going through all of that. I'm glad you are gonna stay with us. My prayers are with you! 3 - 5 yrs ago I went through some of that. Quilting & God got me through!

QuiltE 03-02-2012 08:06 PM

Thanks CarrieM ... I'll look forward to seeing more as you go. I've seen some of the ones where you add the sashing to the blocks. I kind of like that ... though I have wondered if it might be hard to keep all squared up ... and the lines matching up.

DublB ... you don't even want to know about all my PhD! :) You had me totally intrigued about a Solar System quilt as all I thought about was the energy/solar panels!!! Then I went duhhhhhhhh!! :)

CarrieM and DublB ... Will there be any retreat specific projects? Or just take what you want to work on?

dublb 03-02-2012 09:04 PM

OK - Boy are ya sewing fast! Way to go!
Carrie - I too am thinking of doing QAYG for this quilt! It'll be my first king size & I really don't think I can FMQ it on my DSM.
QuiltE - Solar panels HMMMM I'm not sure I could pull that off. :D That sounds like something I would have figured! Great minds think alike.
At the retreat that I'm going to, we will all take what we want ta work on!

I'm going to use fabric that I have in my stash and just make my own "nonPony Club" quilt. I hope you guys won't kick me off this wagon train. I really love all your cute and theme-appropriate blocks but I've been stressing over how to add some cuteness to mine. I confess that I haven't enjoyed making them and I quilt for enjoyment, not stress. So if it's okay with you all, I'll still tag along but I'll have to be your "city cousin"--I just can't do farm life. I love all your blocks---I hope I'm making sense and no one is offended. Please know I really, really love all your blocks. If there's no room for the city gal, I'm okay with that!! I'll still ooh and aah with you all.

JanRN please stay with us, I am not doing the pony theme and am thoroughly enjoying making my blocks. I think the only blocks I will not be doing will be the actual pony block as it will not fit into my fabric theme. I chose the fabric line American Banner Rose for my quilt so definitely no farm scenes (and I too am a city girl, but we can still pretend to like the country life):o

I take very few courses/classes as I find so many of them are nothing "new" to learn.
So I saw this one and thought, maybe I might?
For me, it's about technique exposure.
If I like it great. If I don't, at least I have a bit of a concept what it's about.
At this point, I have no idea the cost.
I did send an email asking for more info, so I'll let y'all know more when I know too.

JanRN ... are we going to have to use our lassos on you? :)
As for "all my energy" ... not so ... remember I don't have all the extra people and animals in my life, so have a little more time on my hands than most of the rest of you.

QuiltE it might be what we call confetti quilting, don't know if anyone is doing that over there. Itsy bitsy tiny tiny pieces of fabric laid down to create a scene, usually from a photo then overlaid with netting and quilted. If it is not this then I have no idea he he he

I admire you for taking such good care of yourself by having something you love to do and doing it! You deserve the happy dance. I wish you clear thinking and good organization for the confessional. I too remember those days and don't miss them a bit. We had hogs.

gardnergal970 03-03-2012 05:28 AM

Mirabelle...I'm going to look for that fabric line. I just love it!
Carrie...I've done a couple QAYG but I'm still not satisfied with the back. I guess like most things, it takes practice. It sure does make the actual quilting easier.
Retreats...there is a workshop coming up at the end of this month and I'm choosing to drive back and forth this time. It's only 10 miles and I'll get a normal nights sleep although I will miss the good stuff that always happens after hours. I'm still new enought to quilting that I'm sure I will learn something.

Tornadoes again went south of us along the Ohio River. A couple of small towns were devastated. No words to describe what the damage looked like and there were fatalities too.

It is just a time for everyone to work on their own projects. The card swap is optional...I think we have 12-15 planning to do that on Saturday. We will just set up the card materials on separate tables and people can make them throughout the day when they feel like it.

MiraB
... yes that's what it looks like. The list of things to brings includes photos/pics. There's a link in post #41 with some of the teacher's work. OMG ... I feel intimidated just looking at it all. :)

GGal ... you go GGal!!! We can always pick up some tidbit of info (or six!). And then you can check for bags under the eyes for whomever is partnered up with the other lady this time, as you arrived fresh as a daisy!! :)

CarrieM and DublB ... we'll all be expecting a full Show and Tell after!

dublb 03-03-2012 11:06 AM

I love how we all are interested in the other things we each are doing. :)

carriem 03-04-2012 05:22 PM

Finished another quilt---QAYG D9P

4 Attachment(s)
This is the quilt I was doing QAYG with this week. I just got the binding done tonight and now am washing. It is another D9P. It is either a large throw or a small twin. :)

I sew the rows together, sandwiching top/bat/back...when two rows are together I mark and quilt big X's through each block then add the last row and quilt those...I add one border at a time...see picture with backing showing to see the quilting a little better. Yes, the pink sashing and what was my center block before cutting has silver sparkles!

The other QAYG method I use

4 Attachment(s)
Here is the other quilt I was telling you about...I can find these directions after my retreat next week if anyone is interested...I just won't have time this week!

Carrie

pictures

#1 is one 24" block...I did SITD around the green fabric in the block only...I usually use a feather stitch for a more decorative look...plus it hides if the stitching isn't exactly straight!

#2 is 2 blocks together (the dark purple sashing is how I connected the blocks.

#3 is a close up of the QAYG on the front

#4 is the back (can you find it?) ...you actually iron the seam allowance in and then glue the back strip on then sew from the front...

dublb 03-04-2012 06:57 PM

Oh, Wow! Carrie, those are lovely!!! I like the way you used 2 different ways to do 'em.

QuiltE 03-04-2012 08:54 PM

Those are lovely CarrieM ... a real girly-girl quilt for the first one!! And so pretty the mix of colours and fabrics for the 2nd one. Could you show us a pic of the whole quilt? I'd really like to get a look at how it all looks for the full top. It's a Beauty! Yes, I'd be interested in the instructions .... I foresee me trying the techniques on some table runners before I try anything big.

carriem 03-05-2012 04:23 AM

QuiltE--I don't have the 2nd one done yet. The blocks are all done and even the quilting, but I haven't finished the QAYG or added borders. This is a quilt I work on between projects before I feel like starting all over again...so it could be together in the next couple weeks. :) If I have a goal (or someone that wants to see it), that is good motivation!

I got to thinking maybe I did save the page instead of just print the directions and I even found them on the QB site...

Carrie

gardnergal970 03-05-2012 06:10 AM

Carrie...In a nick of time...I'm just ready to assemble my D9P and you method A will fill the bill. A little different than what I've done and it looks like it turns out really neat. Now a trip to the LQS to get my stripping and backing fabric and get started. I really want to get this one off of my design wall so I can finish up my Civil War quilt. I'll use the same method for it but I need to finish a couple more blocks so I can get it layer out and start putting it together. I have the backing for that one but will need to figure out the stips. It has Irish Chain for the setting blocks so the strip will have to be very unnoticeable. THANK YOU, CARRIE!!!!:):):):)

dublb 03-05-2012 11:27 AM

Thank You Carrie! I've always wondered about that method.

oksewglad 03-05-2012 12:11 PM

Carrie, thanks for sharing the QAYG projects. Fabrics are so different from what we've been seeing on the PC trail. Nice. Both are delightful.

carriem 03-05-2012 02:52 PM

Thanks for all the compliments. The pink quilt is for a good friend of mine. The purple/oriental fabric is just something I liked and bought then found a pattern to use with it...I don't usually do that, but I am really happy with it. It will just be another throw for in the living room unless I find I need a gift shortly after it is finished. :)

Let me know if you have any questions about the QAYG...I have done the 1st way MANY times. Not sure how well I can describe it in words, but could always take some step by step pictures if needed.

Carrie

QuiltE 03-06-2012 05:03 PM

CarrieM ... we'll look forward to seeing the whole thing, when you get to that point! Thanks for the link ... I remember seeing it from before. I like the looks of it ... it looks like it might be difficult to keep everything squared and straight as you join it all together, so that all the lines are lined up.

cwessley 05-25-2012 07:36 AM

Hey that is my quilt!!! I have the bestest friend in the whole wide world!!! She made this for me and I just love the sparkles on it. Carrie is an amazing quilter and teacher! You should see the bag she made for me to carry my quilt to retreats in it too rocks:) I am just catching up on all the old postings and found this. Hope you all enjoyed her quilting skills as much as I do.
