I just picked up my FWS from the LAQ .... squeeeeeeeeeeeel !!!!!!!

Final step of binding soon to come!! wheeeeeeeeeeeeee!!!!!!!!!!!!!
:D :D :D

QuiltE I picked up my FWS from the LAer a few weeks ago, I have the binding on ----- and I'm not sure I am happy with the quilting she has done on it. I think I need a day to myself to lay it out and keep coming back to look at it. She quilted it in a dark thread and to me it seems the blocks are lost..

janRN 05-14-2012 04:21 AM

Mirabelle, have you posted a pic here yet? If so where and if not PLEASE do!! I'm so excited to see yours & QE's FWS. I'm sure it's beautiful. It looks so different once quilted that I understand you looking at it and wondering. I've never quilted with dark thread so that too would take me getting used to looking at. I'm so excited for you & QE.

mirabelle 05-14-2012 04:37 AM

JanRN will post a pic tomorrow, I have to hang it on the clothes line as it is so big. Should I post here or on the FWS chat... although I think most of the FWSer's are here..

QuiltE 05-14-2012 07:52 AM

Oh MiraB ... I'm :( for you that you are :( and disappointed with the quilting. Maybe by not looking at it for a few days, and then seeing it from a distance, it will help you take your eyes off the dark? And I'm sure I haven't helped much, with my excitement. I'm sorry. As for where to post, whether right or wrong, I've continued to post it over on the original FWS completion thread, so that anyone following the thread sees it. Meanwhile, as you know I do tell everyone here about it so they won't miss it.

I left it with my LAQ for the thread choice and she used a brown for the main part, with a matching green for the final border as she felt the brown was going to emphasize the quilting too much rather than let the border frame it. You still see the quilting there, but it's more subtle. I can see what you mean with the quilting taking you away from the work of the block, as I can see that in some of mine. And then, there are some of the blocks, where the quilting has improved the block!! Almost every block has a different quilt design. My backing is a beige/cream marble look with some bling, so with the darker stitchings, it makes for a nice reversable whole cloth look!

JanRN ... not sure when I'll get the binding done. Then to figure out how to get a good photo! I wish I had a clothesline .... maybe the eavestrough of my home? :D

dublb 05-14-2012 04:42 PM

Miribelle; I hope that your quilt looks better after time. I'm so sorry that it wasn't what ya thought it would be. Did you & the quilter discuss thread color, or did she do it on her own? Do ya need ta talk ta her about it? {{Huggs!}}

dublb 05-14-2012 04:48 PM

It's rain' it's porin', The old man is snorin'! He fell outa' bed & bumped her head & now he is roarin'!"
I'm so excited!

I did post on the FWS thread but will post here, so I hope nobody minds,
I couldn't get a full photo of it as it is just so big, hope you like it

QuiltingNinaSue 05-15-2012 03:42 AM

Beautiful!!! Wow. Maybe this will inspire me to finish the last four rows of mine...all blocks are sewn together down to last four rows. It was a BIG project, and so nice to know and see one finished.

janRN 05-15-2012 04:23 AM

Oh that is wonderful!! You have a great balance of light & dark blocks, colors, tones--just beautiful. I understand your initial reaction to the dark quilting thread; I'm not used to that either but it really enhances your blocks. We look at our quilts up close and stare at individual parts--piecing, colors, quilting, etc. but when viewed as a whole you get a different perspective. It is stunning Mirabelle and you should be very, very proud of yourself. Great work!

gardnergal970 05-15-2012 05:04 AM

I agree with JanRN. Wonderful balance of color values and beautiful work. It looks like she used a computerized design. Have you looked at how other LAQ's choose to quilt this quilt? There are endless possibilities I'm sure. It's difficult when the finished product doesn't meet our expectations. Is this a nudge towards your own LA? You do a lot of quilting from what you've shown us and you might really enjoy it.

wendiq 05-15-2012 05:53 AM

Mirabelle,.....that is B-u-ti_ful!!!!!!!!!!...Since I had no preconceived ideas of what it "should" look like, I love it.........I, personally, think the quilting is very complimentary and a job well done. I had a quilt done last year that I was not happy with, but everyone I showed it too thought I was nuts and said they really liked it. I know I was nit picky, but like we all know, sometimes we are our worst critic. I hope you come to like this as it certainly represents a HUGE amount of work.....

oksewglad 05-15-2012 07:17 AM

mirabelle--thanks for sharing your quilt on both threads. Just getting your quilt finished is an accomplishement and made even better by it's beauty.
Since my FWS is still in the infant stages, I am rethinking how I will put it together and may make 2 quilts instead of just one. Like QNS you have inspired me to make sure I finish it!

I am glad I made 2 lap size quilts out of the FWS quilt. Hubby and I used them all winter, I kept them over the back of our chairs, they made the living room look so cozy all winter!

Again, Mirabelle, that quilt is wonderful! Great workmanship!

gardnergal970 05-15-2012 03:05 PM

To avoid a long-living UFO, I just might take the blocks I have done, about 65, and make a couple of lap quilts. I would have to alternate with fabric squares but it could be very nice and it wouldn't be hanging over my head while I enjoy going on to new things. Maybe???

Yes the LAer has a computerised Gammill and she alternated 2 designs between the blocks. I was going to quilt it myself but it was just so BIG. I had visions of each blocks being quilted differently and I discussed this with her, but I think she really forgets what customers tell her.
SO I am seriously considering quilting the Pony Club quilt myself, maybe in 3 sections and then the final borders. Having never quilted sections and then joined them I will have to think about it a bit more. I do enjoy FMQ but large quilts are beyong me with my back problems

Thank you again everyone for your kind words and all the encouragement that was given throughout this very long journey. I never would have made this quilt without you, it would still be a wannado

Mirabelle, that is how I did my last Bonnie Hunter Mystery Quilt. I sandwiched the three layers, visually divided the top into three. I then cut the batting from the two outsides. I labeled them right and left, so I knew how to put them back together. I then spray basted the center section. I also found I needed to pin the edges of the center section so I knew where to quit the quilting. LOL - ask me how I know.....had to unstitch some of it! The quilt was on the diagonal, so was confusing when I was quilting. When the center is done, I then cut Wonder Under into 1" strips and ironed another section of batting back on. Sprayed that section and quilted it, then did the third section. It really worked well for me. Hope that makes sense.

Hey Ya'll, I'm so tired I can't see straight. Dh & I were at Lowe's Home Improvement Center, yesterday. I mentioned how nice the tile in the bathrooms looks. So we bought some for the kitchen, came home & started tearing up the kitchen floor. There is linoleum under the vinyl tile. We got a lot done yesterday on the first layer till we came to a place that the tile men used double glue. It was like hittin' a brick wall. Well th'smornin' I had an biyearly DR. appointment in Lubbock. (Got a good report & I can make it a yearly appointment now!) We got home around 3:00. I had some errands ta run & DH had other ones ta run. When he was through with his errands he went & bought a Heat Gun. That changed it from an imposable job ta a hard one. We worked for 4 hours this evenin'. I'm so tired I can hardly move! (No insomnia tanight!) I hope we finish tearing it up tamorrow. DH does have ta go ta work tamorrow. :hunf: I guess somebody has ta feed us. I'll work a little at a time & git my DSon ta help in the afternoon.

mirabelle 05-15-2012 06:40 PM

Good luck with the renovations BB, I have renovated 1 house, never want to do it again:mad:

dublb 05-15-2012 07:38 PM

That floor is 19 yrs old. We have plans ta put some really nice floorin' down (ie wood) but haven't found what we both like. For now this will be better than what we have now, & it'll come up easy, when we git ready ta put the other in. There is really a lot of things that my house needs. I guess floorin' is the best place ta start. I'm really headed ta bed now. 3 houres earlier than usual. Nite All.

QuiltE 05-15-2012 07:48 PM

I'll echo JanRN's and GGal's comments!

It is a spectacular quilt,
MiraB. It's just too funny that both our LAQ'ers went with brown thread! There are some of mine where the thread seems to detract ... though when I stand back, and look, I can see how the quilting is giving the block movement.

Ladies ... last stitch on the binding has been sewn!!

JeanieG 05-15-2012 08:42 PM

Congrats to both QuiltE and Mirabelle on the finish of their FWS quilts. Isn't it just the greatest feeling to finally finish up a project of this size? Now onto new projects! That is what is fun, there is always something else to take the place of the one we finish!

mirabelle 05-16-2012 03:56 AM

JeanieG thanks for the info, I did print it off when you explained it on another thread. I have another quilt that needs quilting so might do it on the weekend. 3 sections then the border. We will see how much greyer I get :D

Termi 05-16-2012 07:47 AM

Oh mirabelle, your quilt is gorgeous!!!! The colors are beautiful and I like how you used white in it. Really makes the colors pop. Congratulations on finishing it!

Thanks
JeanieG ... it certainly is a wonderful feeling. As for "new" projects ... I'm trying to NOT do that!!! Focusing on those PUPpies for awhile ... at least till the end of the month when the LQS' UFO Challenge is finished! I certainly won't have all the PUPs done, but there'll be fewer left than there were a month ago!!!! This FWS certainly has been my biggest quilting commitment and finish to date!

Many Many THANKS to
Everyone for being there to cheer me on, and motivate me to keep at it to the end!!! You've been "Friends" beyond belief!

Skirt hangers and a deck railing to the rescue!!!
Until today I'd never thought of this being a good place for photo ops!
To the left my house (walk out basement, so thethe deck behind the quilt is raised, yet attached to the main floor. Immediately to the right there's a narrow path next to the raised deck (storage underneath) and then it immediately slopes as it becomes the bush.
Just one picture here, and I'll post more over on the Completed thread, so you can see more of the detail.

Beautiful QuiltE. Love the green with the tan setting triangles, frames it perfectly.

JeanieG 05-17-2012 06:58 PM

Wow, words do not describe how beautiful that quilt is QuiltE. I just love it! You deserve to be proud of that work of art!

dublb 05-17-2012 07:45 PM

OMGosh, It's beautiful! Words can't describe how wonderful it is. A work o' Art.

wendiq 05-18-2012 06:52 AM

QUILTE Your quilt is just plain "stunning". Your color choices for the setting triangles and cornerstones along with that rich green is the perfect setting for some pretty perfect blocks. And I love your "new" hanging area.....sure sets the green off well.......kind of "back to nature".....:)! I'm sure you have told us, but again please.....the finished size??? Will you use this on a bed or hang it or (heavens)give it away?

oksewglad 05-18-2012 11:01 AM

Perfect setting for a perfect quilt!! Just delightful.

mirabelle 05-18-2012 03:05 PM

What a great idea for the corner blocks, I love your FWS QuiltE. The green was a great choice:thumbup:

QuiltE 05-18-2012 04:51 PM

Thanks Everyone ... for the many kind words! You each played a big part in this quilt, as without you, I know it would not have got it finished. Or at the least, it sure wouldn't have got finished yet and more likely would have been one big UFO project!

WendiQ ... it finished off at 81x105". I would love to hang it, as I think that's how it will show itself best, but sadly my home just has the typical 8ft ceilings. Oh how I wish I had my old farm house to be able to do so. So, yes, likely it'll go on the spare bed for now and hopefully, there'll be some classes at the Fairs this year, that I can enter it.

gardnergal970 05-19-2012 04:40 AM

QuiltE...you could hang it sideways with a couple inches to spare if you have a wall that was 10 feet! :). Entering it in the fair is an awesome idea. Maybe your LQS would display it too. It's s work to be seen by the world.

I've entered in Fairs the last two years. Most of them, I have few classes being that I don't do the quilting myself. Though most have a class for piecing judged, and LAQ by someone else. The wall is a problem ... I think the only wall that I'd have that long without a door/window would be the living room ... and it would look so out of place, unless I redecorated, which would mean new furniture too! :) As for LQS, I'll be asking, but I don't expect a positive, as I've only seen their quilts and samples. I can understand that, for several reasons ... not all of their fabric, not a pattern they are going to be doing with a class ... and probably more so, to not start a stampede of jealousy, "why don't you hang my quilt?" :) So spare bed for now, the fairs ... and I'm trying to think of places it could visit to hang for awhile (as in public places to show it off, where it'd be "safe" from grubby fingers etc.)

I'm hoping for reds .. (In Canada, red is 1st! :))

QuiltE...how about on a local bank, hospital, library, museum..someplace with high ceilings and good lighting?

Thanks GGal ... Good ideas!!!! I had thought about our local Hospice, though I'm not sure there is a space available for it as there's already a Cathedral Windows quilt on display, that was donated to them. It'd be a perfect spot, and I'm not sure if there's anywhere else.

I've been thinking ... and wondering where I might have the connections. So far no great brainwaves! :) The best I've come up with yet, is one friend's home might be a possibility.

Termi 05-19-2012 01:22 PM

Wow, QuiltE, your quilt is just gorgeous!!!!! I can see you winning many blue ribbons. Great idea on how to hang it, works perfectly.

QuiltE 05-19-2012 07:24 PM

Thanks Termi ... though there's a lot of competition. Last year there was a Sylvia's Wedding Quilt at one of the Fairs, though not in a class that I entered. Other than that I haven;t seen any other smaller block samplers shown. However, with their popularity, I wouldn't be surprised if there are several this year. One Fair is the 2nd weekend in June, then none til September. (and reminder, Red for Canada! :))
