Blocks 43 (sort of) & 44

I can't figure out how to join the corner sections to the center; do I have to hand sew it? I asked this before but my post got buried so I'm really needing your help (obviously LOL). Thanks so much for all the help and suggestions-
Peace-Jan

I am hand sewing all of my blocks, BUT this one was a pain! it should not be assembled this way!

if you look closely at the photo in your book you will see that the block was not made to the pattern, it was assembled in four quarters.
the center diamond shape would have to be in four. thereby having need of eight smaller triangles instead of the four larger ones. in addition to the four squares.

does this make any sense?

Love this, where do you get the block of the month from and the past ones, this looks like it could be fun.

AnngelAnne 12-29-2010 07:08 AM

Hi, I have the PP patterns from the Yahoo site and the center square is divided into 4 quarters and each quarter is then added to it's own (color) corner section--so the four # 7 template pieces should become eight additional T # 13--instead of 20 pieces you should cut 28 of them.

Honchey, your block 44 is gorgeous! I think mine is one of those that will be re-done; it is so ugly. I've re-done a few, but may just wait until I see what does not "work" in the finished quilt before I re-make any more.

Anyway, for better or worse, here are my 43 & 44.

Oh, its time for the garden path and the gentleman's fancy...I had fun with this. My husband said he just got married, he did not die, therefore, he could still look... and window shop; I said he could not bring home any samples or sample anywhere else!!It was always a joke in my family; if Granddad failed to see it then Grandma would call his attention to a good looking woman...

Hi Weezie, There's nothing wrong with your blocks ! - a little pressing and trimming would really set them up just fine! Take the extra time to do this before the"photo shoot" and you'll be pleasantly surprised. I hope I don't sound critical -it's not what I intended. Anne

GrannyQ, Many times the PP patterns are assembled differently than how it's diagramed in the book--mostly for the better. It doesn't hurt to look at them before you start the block this way you can piece it the easiest way for yourself.

Thanks, all of you, for the compliments- my head just got bigger  , Anne

All your blocks look great! I didn't stitch block #43 the way it was directed but changed it so I could easily paper piece it.

You don't sound critical, not to worry. I do trim as much as I dare and still ensure that I have a 6-1/2" sq., so some of the block edges don't look as neat as I'd like. The real blocks look much better than their pictures. Ditto with the pressing. I do press and they look pressed until I photograph them, + the camera picks up every little piece of lint and every flaw & the colors are not true. It's a bit annoying!

janRN 12-29-2010 09:41 AM

These are all beautiful. I'm so embarrassed that I couldn't figure out 43. Thanks everyone-back to the sewing room. I'm going to conquer that block!!

Hi Kookie, we came home for the Holidays-we enjoy watching the grandkids ripping off the Christmas wrapping paper. Oh, and yes we got hit with 26" of snow with drifts of 3+ ft. We have 6ft. icicles hanging from the gutters. We're leaving next week to bring some more "stuff" down to NC. It snowed there too!
I'm halfway done with # 43 then try to catch up with the ones I haven't started with. Good to have you back too!. Anne

Hubby trying to knock off the icicles!

look at these fat icicles!!

Wow! What a welcome home! I've never seen such big icicles!

Thanks, Jeanie. What I don't like (especially in block 44) is the fabrics. Last spring, I got a bunch of 2-1/2" strips & a variety of sizes of squares from Keepsake Quilting; most are fabrics that I would NEVER choose to buy. The fabric is good, but some of the patterns & colors really stink. I waste nothing, so I'm trying to use as many of them as I can in this FWS, but some of them are pretty hopeless. They should be fine as part of the finished quilt, though.

RW, I love, love your blocks 43&44! Maybe because they are in the colors I'm doing my quilt...but I thought they were outstanding!

Thank you Jeanie and Nonnie! I'm getting a couple of projects finished so I can get back to these blocks...I'm still a little ahead, but if I don't crack the proverbial whip over my own head that won't be the case very long...

I figured out how to change things with my EQ5 so was able to change #43 (took me all morning- then the duh moment hit) so wouldn't have y-seams... which made these two fun to do. Here are my 3" ones, the 4" will be following soon.
"Thank you" Quilting Nonnie, I love the blacks they are working in well to blend in my bats block.
