HST's are actually my favorite! I hope I can catch up on these BOM's soon! Miss doing them.

Leslee,
Paper piecing half square triangles and flying geese would put me into a panic. I can never get the angles going in the right direction and then when they finally work, I find that the fabric piece I have just attached is too small for the area I am trying to cover. When paper piecing, I imitate a frog at least 60% of the time that I am sewing the block.

I think it is all a mind set. I would rather practice these two types of patches regular piecing than with paper piecing.

Tell you what, Leslee. You try to do this with regular piecing and I will do it paper piecing, if I can get the pattern to print out at 12 inches. :) :)

Patrice, can you help me out with that?

If you sew a second seam outside the first flying geese seam and cut between them, you have tiny HSTs to use in a later project (like a scrap quilt) and they are already sewed!

I press my squares on the diagonal so I have line to sew down when making HSTs and these corner triangles that make Flying Geese. It is not so hard, except that I have to take the 1/4 inch foot off!

A long time ago, who knows when, someone posted a 'fast flying geese' site.

I followed this method and it does make them so much easier!

I find that if you are careful in the preparations those patches go together easily. It's when we try to go fast or cut corners that we get into trouble. I like the idea of pressing the square on the diagonal to get it accurate. Then if you draw a scant 1/4 inch line on each side of that crease and sew on the line you draw, the half square triangles come out correct.

Patience and preparation is the key. :)

Thanks for the pattern Patrice. Now I have to tackle this as a foundation pieced pattern. Here is where it gets scary for me. But I will try.

Can anyone join in on this at anytime?

ccbear66 02-04-2008 06:34 PM

Of course you may join in. We just do these for fun. If you see one that you want to do go ahead and do it and don't forget to post a pic. We post these twice a month on the first and fiftenth. I'm making the ones that I like and am going to put them with my bday blocks to make a sampler quilt. You can access all of the patterns so far if you go to the home page and click on BOM.
