Judy's 3rd MYSTERY QUILT train ride

1 Attachment(s)
Are we ready to start our third mystery quilt?

Everyone is welcome, new passengers and returning mystery quilt fans. Our journey will last for eight weeks, with this being the first week and the last clue on Dec. 2nd. Clues will be posted here on the next seven consecutive Saturdays so you can have the weekend to get started on that week’s clue. I will try to post by 9:00 a.m. on Saturday morning. Clues will be posted on this thread, not on separate, new postings. During the last Mystery Train, most of you liked having the clues given weekly but that doesn’t mean you need to work that quickly if you do not have the time. This thread will stay on the Quilting Board long after we are done (forever, I think), and you can refer back here as needed. Just bookmark this first page for ease is locating us every week.

On this journey we will make a lap quilt about 62” x 80”and will use 6 different fabrics. My suggestion is to use small to medium prints rather than large scale prints; choices I will use are pictured below -- a monochromatic scheme, which I’ve never tried before, but I am being adventurous this time. (Real reason: I am “shopping” out of my stash.)

If you are using color schemes, other than monochromatic, A and B should look nice together with good contrast, and C and D should look nice together with good contrast, and of course, all four will go together. In the A-B combination, A will be the lighter fabric. In the C-D combination, C will be the darker.

In the monochromatic color scheme, you will have two light and two darker ( not super dark) fabrics. In the picture, you can see my A is lighter than B, and C is darker than D.

E and F will end up being in a position that draws your eye in, and I haven’t decided at this point which will be E and which F. But they should be strong contrast to your A, B, C and D fabrics. You will understand when we get a little farther along what I mean.

So this week you will be choosing fabrics, and you will need the following:
Colors A, B, C and D - 1-1/3 yards each of the four colors.
Colors E and F - ¾ yard each of the two colors.
These measurements are pretty accurate, with maybe a few extra inches left over.

I’ll be checking in quite often during the week to see if you have any fabric questions.

Now, two final things -- Have fun! And who brought chocolate for the club car?

That Avatar is great Esther, noticed/recognised it yesterday

paintmejudy 10-13-2012 08:12 AM

I know you are rooting around in your stash, and I hear you muttering. Welcome back!

dslone 10-13-2012 08:17 AM

love your color choices my I steal your colors

beckalou 10-13-2012 08:21 AM

I'm definitely on board! Can't wait to get started. Thanks for doing this Judy.

paintmejudy 10-13-2012 08:22 AM

No such thing as "stealing" in quilt - borrow, yes, a much gentler word. LOL

paintmejudy 10-13-2012 08:23 AM

You're welcome, beckalou. Can't wait to see your fabrics. To me, seeing what everyone chooses to use is half the fun.

Oksewnsew 10-13-2012 08:24 AM

Oh boy, now to go 'raid' my stash. That may take a while...:D

SunlitenSmiles 10-13-2012 08:29 AM

Thinking monocromatic and love your purples ( have some of those, ok many of those) but some awsomegreens also so off to the stash.

clevermom3kids 10-13-2012 08:32 AM

Judy,
can you answer if there is any applique in this mystery quilt or not? It will influence my decision to participate. While I know how, it's more time consuming for me and I prefer patchwork. I've been dreaming of this all night!

CajunBear 10-13-2012 08:33 AM

Yes I want to explore my quickly disappearing stash. Might have to go shopping but really want to use what I have.

Hugs

Cajun

paintmejudy 10-13-2012 08:45 AM

Clevermom, nope - no applique. I want to make a mystery that everyone can particiapte in, and many, me included, are not too interested, or very good at, in applique. Well, I do fusible web applique, like my avatar, but no hand work.

Cajun - at small pieces like this, it really isn't a stash buster, is it? Sigh. Oh well, I hope my daughters donate my fabric to a good cause when I am gone :p

everythinghomemade 10-13-2012 08:45 AM

I love the color choices... I have brought French toast casserole for this Saturday morning ride

irishrose 10-13-2012 08:46 AM

I haven't finished my last two, but I'm game to start a third. Colors, Hmmm? It'a apple season and nothing comes to mind in choclolate. How about a fresh apple cake with browned butter/cream cheese frosting?

Judaline Jane 10-13-2012 08:47 AM

Please sign me up. This will be my first mystery quilt.

Judaline Jane

jaba 10-13-2012 08:49 AM

Going to look and see what I can find on my fabric shelves. Should have something.

paintmejudy 10-13-2012 08:55 AM

Oh good grief, Everything, your french toast casserole sounds yummy, and so does the apple cake, Irish. I just got rid of the weight I gained last train ride, and here we go again, LOL.

Judaline, nothing to sign up for. Just show up on this thread. Post your fabrics and let everyone drool over them. Glad you will join us.

OF COURSE you can find something in your stash, jaba!

frustratedquilter40 10-13-2012 08:58 AM

I have recently taken part in 2 other Mysteries and I have enjoyed them very much. I am just finishing piecing the second one so I just went to my stash to pick out fabrics. Last year around my birthday my DH had done some work for friends and was paid in many pieces of fabric! I was thrilled! Here are the ones I picked out. I have yet to go read through the threads of the last two Mystery Quilt train rides. I did see Esther's avatar. Wonderful!

paintmejudy 10-13-2012 09:09 AM

I just had a PM from someone asking if she could do two quilts - thinking quilts for the twin grandkids' beds for Christmas, a boy and a girl, and if she's allowed, she wants to do brown/tan/beige monochromatic for the boy and flowery blue/yellow/green.

Oh my, there is no such thing as "is it allowed?' here - you can do as many quilts and post as many pictures as you want. We love your enthusiasm, and can't wait to see the quilts and your fabric choices.

PokerDiva 10-13-2012 09:11 AM

Whew, I am late. Had to finish something first. This is why I am in the Caboose. 6 different fabrics! Trying to make it hard on me aren't you Judy.

paintmejudy 10-13-2012 09:12 AM

Judith, your choices are gorgeous and will work so nicely. I'm sure you will be pleased with your results. DH was paid in fabric? How wonderful for you!

paintmejudy 10-13-2012 09:14 AM

Florence, I needed to keep you on your toes, but after your last shopping sprees, I know you will have 6 you like! Was wondering where you were, so glad you are ok and got on board before we left the station.

SunlitenSmiles 10-13-2012 09:17 AM

leave the station..hah......there are three guys out there still loading my stash into a boxcar....be a while before we are rolling...plenty of time....

everythinghomemade 10-13-2012 09:17 AM

paintmejudy 10-13-2012 09:27 AM

Totally understand my stash takes up a huge row of shelves in 8 foot closet then the other closet same size has 6 rubber maid huge tubs the ones you can not see in( to hide from hubby). Then there are other boxes with fat quarters and kits and don't forget the cart with all the baskets holding patterns and another rubber made full of scraps. LOL to much to bring along going to travel light this time :D

How about this for lunch? http://www.quiltingboard.com/recipes...k-t202928.html. The recipe is from QuiltE. Just finished canning two big batches of salsa yesterday and lots of onions left. Might make some cheesy biscuits (ala Red Lobster Cheddar Bay Biscuits) to go with it. Nothing like a tummy warming lunch to prepare for the fabric selection.

Nelco 10-13-2012 10:09 AM

greeting fellow travelers. I am new on this train ride and excited to go shopping for my fabric. Also I will bring along my spice pumpkin cake to enjoy.

urgodschild2 10-13-2012 10:17 AM

Wow I see the smoke stack on the train puffing and puffing as it waits for us to board. Well......sigh.......My stash is not very big. I will dig and see what I can come up with but I have a feeling that I will have to go shopping before boarding. (sad, I know, smile) The reason I think of out train being an old time one with modern conveniences of course and a top level view part is because I live near Knotts Berry Farm and I hear the train whistle all the time.
I am so excited to get started. I will have to leave for the month of Nov. to fly to Australia but I am not going to look to see what the end results is. I return on the last day of this train ride. But I will send you all some fantastic australian goodies ...like angel wings and lemmikins. I think that is how it is spelt. Maybe we have some down under quilters joining us and they can set me straight. LOL. Off to check what I have.

SunlitenSmiles 10-13-2012 10:18 AM

welcome aboard Nelda.....this will be a great trip......this message comes to you from inside my box of green and almost green fabrics

paintmejudy 10-13-2012 10:21 AM

Nana, you don't need to rush. Just make sure you let me know when the pumpkin cake comes onboard.

OMG I gotta go eat someting, I can't take it anymore. Need some toast with pumpkin butter. I just finished making batchs of pumpkin butter and apple butter (in the crock pot - burn proof) - both go fabulous with cinnamon raisin toast or bagels, with a little bit of cream cheese smeared on as soon as it comes out of the toaster. Yum.

SheriR 10-13-2012 10:24 AM

Lurking...lurking...lurking. But I lurked at the last one and kicked myself when I saw y'all's end quilts! I love that pattern. So..... RUNNING TO STASH... pieces to small ... Oh NO!! I'm gonna have to SHOP. Does this train hit any fun quilt stores??

SunlitenSmiles 10-13-2012 11:23 AM

*

How about 'Nancy's' in Las Vegas
or 'Monica's' in Palm Springs
or there is always 'Cotton & Choclate' in Thousand Oaks
or the "Cotton Ball" in Morro Bay.

Here is my first pick out of what I have in the stash had a hard time coordinating other choice did not have 1 3/4 yard of 4 fabrics that went well together. And I must shop from the stash so this is my pick for this mystery train ride.

paintmejudy 10-13-2012 11:47 AM

Ooo ooo ooo - frustrated, love that combo! "Lovely to look at, delightful to hold." It's gonna be a beauty!
