inner border block, make 12, don't worry, they all don't have to be made this month, work on them over the next few months!

My version of block with folded rosebuds, I did yellow roses in memory of my Mother, her favorite flower.

Here is a tute on how to make a folded rosebud.

Attach the rosebud to the background fabric inside of the calyx placement

closeup

drawn a circle on fabric, in our case I drew a 3" circle

cut out on drawn line

fold circle in half

fold in one side to middle, align lower edge

fold in other side, overlapping a bit

close to lower edge, take a couple of tacking stitches.

Tack the rosebud down along the bottom and inside of the folds of the bud, opening up the folds to hide the stitches

place calyx over folded rose & stitch in place, tucking the fabric around the rosebud.

Thanks so much Peg. I just can't wait to try the rosebuds. Happy Mother's Day.

Beautiful! Great tutorial.

Happy Mother's Day

gal288 05-08-2011 08:39 AM

They are really fun to do, enjoy!

BonniFeltz 05-08-2011 08:51 AM

I'll have to try this and see how it comes out. LOL. It always looks easier when you explain it! My fumble fingers...well doing them is another matter. I'll keep trying though.

gal288,
Thank you so much for getting the May BOM out on the QB today! You gave me a Mother's Day project to do and I love the interruption from my LAQ projects (only 2 left to go!).

Here is my May block, I will get the border done during my Tuesday "NO NCIS" nites.

Peg,
The May block is really pretty. I may have to make mine in yellow too in memory of my MIL. Yellow roses were her favorite. Thanks so much for all your work.

Last Grandma, Love your quilt so far, it's really pretty. Great job.

Surfergirl 05-09-2011 04:26 AM

Thanks Peg! Love the folded rosebud! I'm doing machine applique' so probably won't be able to use that technique.

LindaR 05-09-2011 04:53 AM

Abby'smom 05-09-2011 07:22 AM

Thank you -- have enjoyed doing the blocks

cut the border block background 6-1/2" square, we will trim it to the correct size when we are ready to assemble top.

I got it to work on the home computer Peg. It could have been something with my work computer. Silly thing probably thought I should have been working. :)

Thanks for double checking it.

janetter 05-09-2011 03:45 PM

Also, love the rose bud

linmid 05-09-2011 04:55 PM

I am unable to download the EQ version. The others downloaded just fine. Any suggestions on what to do?

Caro 05-09-2011 08:45 PM

I just finished a block from Elly Seikewinz's (bad spelling, huh?) book. Wish I had had this tutorial before making the rosebuds. Yours look really great! And have personality. The directions in Elly's book were lacking.

capucine 05-09-2011 09:59 PM

Does the The inner blocks have to be the same color flowers all 12 of them? Sorry if this is a silly questions just wondering if they would look ok in different colors:)

LAQUITA 05-09-2011 10:09 PM

AWESOMW~ I LOVE the colors!
Can't wait to see the finished quilt :)

I was wondering the same thing. I thought they probably should be the same color as the 4 small inner corner blocks we just finished last month.

I have all her books, and she is great, but I agree, her books are written for the advanced appliquer, & sometimes lack enough instruction.

I took her method and adapted it to make it easier to do.

Thanks for you nice comments and hope you try it on another quilt.

I plan on making each side match, but not each block.

I think it will look pretty anyway you want to do the colors.

Have fun and mix & match.

I think you can still do the folded rosebud, adapted.

Make the rosebud and tack it in place. Now Make the calyx for fusible, leaving the top section without the fusible stuff on the back. Add the folding seam allowance to the top section.

Lightly press under the top of the calyx, use a little glue to hold in place. Now tack the bottom of the calyx in place.
Now do whatever stitch you use to sew in place.

To get the puffiness of the rose bud, I would hand stitch the top edge of the calyx across the rosebud. But if you can't, go ahead and stitch with the machine.

Hope this works for you.

I went back and looked at the larger version and found what I was missing  I had made a copy of the 60" one and of course didn't show the inner border so I'm up to speed (I think) I really must get busy.

Hey SurferGirl, I am doing machine applique, and I think if you do a little handwork on the buds you can tack the inside down first, then turn down the top edge of the calyx and stitch it down, then lay it over the bud part and stitch around the outside of the calyx. I think that will work.

Now that my kids & grandkids have come & gone I can get back to work and catch up to you all!! I am so happy to be quilting again after spending 2 weeks cleaning and being mom/grandma!!!

Go ahead and give it a try Calla. You never know if you can do something until you try. Fusible isn't too bad to do. If you just want to see about putting on the shapes but not exactly looking forward to stitching around them once they are on....use a heavier fusible and don't stitch around the pieces.

I didn't think I could do these either but found out that I can. It was a surprise to me. Each block and piece I think I get a little better at. Go ahead and try. I have had some methods that I tired, even on here, that I didn't like how it turned out so didn't use. But I didn't give up on other ways to do it. I've learned how to do different methods from watching this board also.

This is a great support group where you won't be laughed at for your efforts.
