Thank you all for your nice comments on my Sylvia block!
@SulaBug: no, it's not a Rhonda pattern, it's a block from the Jennifer Chiaverini's Sylvia's Bridal Sampler from Elm Creek Quilts. It took quite some time because of all the small pieces. Not to mention me sewing things the wrong way so I had to unsew a few times :( @Judy: yes, I counted 69, I think I never made an 6" block before with that many pieces! |
I'm still waiting for an order of light colored Batiks to get to my house for my current pp project. I called Handcock of Paducah to check on the status and was told their cutters were "very busy" and it won't get mailed out until Monday or Tuesday. The waiting is driving me nuts.
|
Anael, your block is beautiful! I have the book and did a few but have never followed through. Seeing your's makes me want to get my act together and make some more. I think I need to get some organizing done in my life! I have too many irons in the fire!
|
Thank you sunrise. I think you should follow through. Once finished it will be an accomplishment and you'll be happy you did it. Some are really hard to do but most of them are quite easy.
Don't start on organizing, I need to do that too. I have so many projects I keep forgetting some :( |
Okay kristen0112,
You may just have me hooked into doing this...and I thought after I finished all 24 of the NYB blocks and 120 pinwheels on my Christmas Pickle quilt that I was done with those for a looooong time...lol...okay, now I am going to admit something, because it just goes to show you learn something new every day....I posted over on my Christmas Pickle quilt thread about how hard it was to square up my blocks because the paper-pieced part seemed to shrink after I put on the arcs...well, I clicked on your link above on how to make a NYB block...it seems that I should have left the paper on the back of the fabric of the paper-pieced units until I had ALL the arc pieces on...well, I took the paper off as soon as they were pieced, and then added all the arcs!! I am laughing so hard at myself!!! Its a wonder the quilt turned out semi- ok..... So, thank you, thank you, thank you for that link!! Regards, Kif |
I have long wanted to do this, but curved piecing just scares me!@

I just finished a drunkard's path a couple of months ago, and here are my notes on curved piecing:
1. Clipping curves and pinning works great, but takes the most time. Stay stitching was not necessary for these small pieces. 2. Some people can sew the curves without pinning at all. I am not one of them. 3. Creasing opposing parts to mark the centers for pinning was essential. 5. Pinning centers, ends, and the middles worked great for me. 6. Stilettos are essential tools. 7. Your mileage may vary. |

:thumbup: And, as I embarrassingly admitted above...after making 24 NYB blocks for a quilt without doing it....leave the paper on the back of the paper-pieced part until you have the curved pieces on and the whole block finished!! :o

I must confess that I have nine individual blocks done already!! :D When I got started, I just couldn't stop myself, but I will be out of town all of next week so I won't be able to sew any more for now. This block pattern is so addicting!! Thank you Kristen0112 for taking on this project for all of us to share.

I'm in for this. I pp'ed DDWR and have foundations copied for this that I've never used. This one looks like a real challenge. No pictures from me most likely. I haven't got a camera anymore. (long story)
I loved seeing all the example quilts. |
I just printed all the blocks out. I plan to make three of each. I am still working on my Batik Sampler and so far so good!!
|
Welcome Sucia! It will be a fun block to do.
|
Hmmm I think I should join this. Now is it paper pieced or more template pieced?
I printed Ula Lenz's templates out before but my computer/printer prints it just a smidge, 1/16 in., too small. I am not sure how I can remedy that. Any ideas? |
already started......I wish....
I have been knee deep in making jam and applesauce. Now I am getting ready to leave town. DH is out putting the ol' T in the trailer. I will get this organized when I get back. DH is having surgery on his wrist, canning is done. I will fix my machine and get going. |

I was able to just 'pretend' the rest was there when I was doing a test block. But I will probably get legal sized paper to print all the patterns - some print fine other are a little outside the printing page. |
Thanks for the welcome and the tip. I think I will wait for my computer swavy eldest son to help me when he stops in.

I think, I'd like to join too. I do love to PP and NYB is on my bucket list.
|
I ordered Carol Doaks foundation paper from Amazon last night and it has shipped already.

NyGal - love Carol Doaks. |
I have never paper-pieced before. I think this would be a good tome to try. Melody

LOL. You are welcome! It is hard to resist starting early on them and they are so much fun. I am sure everyone would love to see what you've done so far if you want to post pictures.
Thank you everyone for looking, as I am having so much fun making these!! :D :D :D :D |
Sulabug, can't wait to see what the end result is with these blocks! They're luscious!
|
Sulabug they are wonderful! I hope you enjoy our visit.
|
Thank you girls for your kind comments. I can't wait to see them all together myself!! :D I am planning on making each set of four out of a different set of fabric's. Do you think this will go together okay, or should I stick to using one or two of the same color's in each block? I am just not sure what to do here!! But I am having FUN!!
:D :D :D :D |
Sulabug I am sure you get a different answer depending on whom you talk too. I like controlled scrappy and the more fabrics the better so that is what I would say. See what style and color ways you like and do what suits you.

I'm new to this group, and am still finding my way through all the threads. This is a project that I've beeen thinking of doing, so I'm in. I have made one NY Beauty, and it is one of my favorite quilts. I'm looking forward to starting in on a new one. It will be fun to piece along with everyone.

I need to get some legal sized papers and then I am in printing business. I finaly have the size right.
|
I second this ruler. I have both. Take a moment to see how it is used to trim the piece to 1/4 inch before sewing on the next piece. This has taken my paper pieicng to a higher level.

I recommend buying an "Add A Quarter Inch Ruler". I ordered the 6 inch one from connecting threads then ordered the 12 inch one. Here is what it looks like.....

DS is doing an errand into town picking up fertilizer and he will pick up legal sized paper too. Can't wait till he comes back.

Boy, I do not know if I am going to be able to join this or not. Everyone has been soooo helpful to me regarding paper piecing. Here is my first attempt at PP. It is a PP block for the Block of the Month with Quilt Story. It is called Wild Block. WHEW!! I feel like I did enough sewing and unsewing on this that it should be a Queen Size quilt instead of a block. I will have to admit that I probably made every error possible while doing this. It was frustrating but ended up being fun. I like the way it turned out. It is true that you need to practice this PP thing. I will practice a bit more and then decide what to do. Again thanks for all your comments and encourgement. What is the trick to not wasting fabric? Maybe I had my pieces way too large. ?? Any ideas?
|
I have been planning on trying this for a while now.
|
sustraley, I always make an extra copy of the pattern when the pieces have odd shapes. I use that extra copy for cutting templates. It prevents from waisting much fabric. Just make sure to cut the right way or you'll end up with a mirror piece which doesn't fit. Ask how I know :D
Your first block turned out great! |
