I am running behind on my blocks. I only have one of #1 done so far. But October is not over yet. I spent twice as much time trying to choose my materials so the colors blend well. I really like how my first #1 block looks. I just hope my overall works well. I stopped by my Wal-mart to look for some flannel for another WIP and found some pretty stuff on sale. So I bought a few more yards of material I hope will blend well with what I have. Fun times ya'll! I will try to take and post pictures when I have finished my #1 blocks. I have enjoyed seeing the ones that have posted so far.

Hi all. Well it took me the better part of today to work on my blocks. I took the suggestion of 'someone' previously in this thread and for block #1, I cut out enough to make 5 blocks. Good thing too, because one of em is wonkie! I am simply thrilled that I am up to date on this, yea! Pictures to come after I tackle that learning curve..... :)

I love the greens and browns in your block! Are you taking these colors all through the quilt?

My block1 of NYB
1 Attachment(s)
Today was a laid back rainy day! I brought my sewing machine, iron, and fabrics into the kitchen using the breakfast bar for sewing so I could enjoy the fireplace.
I had a few of my basket blocks to catch up in for another BOM. After doing those I brought out my NYB. You should of seen DH's face when I had all the counters covered with fabrics. I put this combination with that one and back and forth before I made my decision. Teal was the color for this block. I have attached the photo, this is Block 1, and the only one I have finished. I was amazed at how complex it was and was intimidated. I went into Ripit ripit mode twice. The first time was because I did not put right sides together, the second was smoothing out the curve. The curve gets me everytime. I still messed up where I wanted which fabrics on the points but if I don't tell, you won't know, right? Even though there is more piecing in this block I did it! 3 more to go. Time to run, time to cook up some comfort food for dinner. |

thanks for the compliments. You have no idea how much i appreciate them. So Thank you, thank you. I remember PP'ing a block many years ago and could not understand it. Now I find that PP'ing the sections with all the points are the easiest. Those curves still get the best of me. This is my first PP'ing project and I think I have it now. I have wanted to make a NYB forever. |
Oh i forgot to say, no laughing ok. I needed some green fabric in the stash for this project.
I headed to check out DH's shirts. He is no longer working and they are taking up room. I found the perfect green to go with my NYB fabrics, 100% cotton too~ |

Getting there! Man oh man is this a challenge. But then, maybe it's what I'm supposed to be doing - to stretch and challenge myself as a quilter. Will I ever enter this quilt into a show??? Heck no! Maybe show this at my guild meeting? Yes, provided they don't look too closely. lol I will persevere!!! I will not let this get the best of me. I will conquer this project. OK. I feet better. Thank you for letting me vent. As you can see from my first attempt at the #1 block, I lost (sacrificed, chopped off, etc) one of my points. Please see the previous sentence. . . . I'm coming up with new curse words. Who wouldn've thought it??? I can do this. I can do this. I can do this. . . . . How is everyone else??? Jane |
I get the point! :) As I see it, all the points are perfect.
Great choice of fabrics too. The scrappy look is fantastic in these blocks. I think my favorite is block1 |
I'm so glad to see more photos. Everyone has different colours, but they have chosen fabrics which co-ordinate so well. Love everyone's blocks.

I had begun a Batik paper pieced Sampler before I signed up to do the NYB here. I just finished these four
blocks so take a peek. I really enjoy paper piecing. I still plan to do the blocks that were posted here for the NYB. |

These are the blocks I have made so far. I'm quite happy with block 0 but not block 1. Is there a secret to getting the circles to sit nicely I undid this one sooo many times I wore a hole in the fabric. I think I've got the hang of the points. Do you square these blocks up ? Any advise gladly accepted. Thank you. |
QA, the circles are a challenge for me too. I finally tore the paper off, and used my sewing skills. If you have ever sewn a blouse/shirt, think "set in sleeves".
I did square up my blocks when I finished each one. sometimes When I quilt, I don't square them up until I sew them together though. No excuses, it is just the way I do it. Nice colors, I love the scrappy thing you have going. I am trying to get scrappier..... |
Oh such pretty blocks. I love paper piecing and am dying to start this. I am finishing up my 50 fabulous paper pieced stars project on here. I have the quilt together and need to make a back and finish the matching wall hanging. I have a picture posted on that thread. I am really happy with how it came out. I did it scrappy with matching background fabric. I plan on doing this totally scrappy. My stash has gotten totally out of control. I need to use some of it up. I will use batiks. I have tons of it. Can't wait to start this has been on my buchet list for a long time.

All of these new blocks are looking fabulous!! :D I have already finished & shared the first two block sets with everyone earlier in this thread. Now I have started the two blocks for November & have three of the first set done. Hopefully I will get the fourth one done soon & start on the second block set. When they are all finished, i will post a picture & share with everyone. Keep up the great work ladies, you are doing so good!!
:D :D :D :D |
I love seeing what people are doing with these great patterns!
My first Mariners Compass was a bit over a year into my quilting career when a quilty friend's DH, who was terminal with cancer said he had always wanted one. I Had a terrible time with the background for my next several MCs. Now I cut the pattern using an Xray film template and do as was suggested earlier, pinning the center only and sewing from there to the sides. As I saw on a Simply Quilts show years ago, the background is on top, held loosely elevated, shifting as I go. I'll have to start a bit later as I have several "have to's" to get out of the way first. |
i still plan on joining in. I added a twin size quilt to my list of things i needed to accomplish first. It is on the frame and have only three borders left to quilt. The queen size has blocks sewn together waiting on the borders. Soon as I get it on the frame (hopefully next week),i'll be able to sit back and do NYB. Plan on using only black and white fabrics but may throw in a dash of color if i feel it is needed. will post again once I actually start sewing these NYB blocks.
|
TIP: Cut the "outer piece" as one piece instead of 2. This might take a little more fabric, but I like that I skip the extra seam. I have both taped em together (don't like to iron with tape) and have re-copied the piece. Hope this is helpful to someone.

Sorry guys, didn't mean to make the phots so large.
|
Your blocks are stunning.
I am plugging away at mine, but life got in the way of quilting, so I'm going to use December to catch up a bit (I have some time off work then). No one has posted for a long time, and I was wondering if people were still working on them. I was so glad to see your post, and I personally don't think your photos are too large. Love your colours. amh |

Wonder contrast in those blocks, efayard! I am glad your pictures are not small, so don't change them.
I am working on these blocks also, 2 done. I think it might take more than December to be all caught up. I needed to leave some time for my Christmas sewing too. Keep those photos coming, I love the scrappy look with these. |

Wow such gorgeous blocks. Still haven't started yet, but I am very anxious to start. Keep up the good work. My 50 fabulous paper pieced star quilt is all sewn together and now I am working on the back. I blew one of the stars up 300% and am putting it on the back.
