On the good side though, I have spent the day sewing my block, Rosellen's Cross. I have to say that I did not particularly like the pic of Penny H's block in the book, but after seeing Obsessed's different choice of fabrics and thinking about my choices, I have now decided it wasn't the block as much as Penny's choice of fabrics that didn't appeal. Here is my Rosellen's Cross. I have to agree with you about the fabrics used for the block in the book. Looks a little jumbly - hard to tell what's what! |
DeeCee, Your block is very, very pretty!
|
Oh DC that is so striking, I love the choices you made with yiour fabric. Wow.
|
Thanks everyone.
I must say my 6" block has so many layers it could stand upright on its own and there isn't much useable fabric that you can cut out. That's where Jupiter's 12" blocks have the advantage over the 6". Looking forward to seeing more fabric choices for this one. |

I haven't started actually sewing my blocks yet (decided to cut a number of them out first), but I was afraid this would happen. I really want to trim the excess, but now I'm wondering if I will be able to. Have a Blessed Day! Marcia |
Marcia, I don't think you will have a problem actually trimming the excess out but what comes out would be mainly small and odd shapes - not very useable apart from a few larger pieces. (Though I suppose useable depends on what size scraps you save and use.)
I also wonder if they would press up nice and flat if I had lots of little sections cut out of the back on multiple layers. There are quite a few blocks that are made up of anywhere between 20 - 37 pieces. If anyone has trimmed out Rosellen's Cross or any of the blocks which have more layers and smaller pieces, I would welcome their feedback. |

Interested to hear your trimming results, Obsessed.
I have to admit I have been too chicken to trim as yet. Put scissors in my hand and I'm a danger to anything nearby. I have a compulsion to trim, then trim a bit more..... |

as in little pieces. For one thing, once I have used a fabric/fabrics in a quilt I don't like using them in another quilt. (I don't like watching a movie or a TV show more than once either :D ). I guess I'm odd, but it wouldn't bother me at all to trim the excess and do away with it. (I can already hear some of you screaming at your computer screen reading this - so sorry  ! Have a Blessed Day! Marcia |

Mine is done for the week. It's rather busy and I am not fond of the creamy yellow pieces. Light blue would have been a better choice. But I'm happy with how it went together.
|
I think it is very pretty keelybird.

Here is my Rosellens Cross. Somehow, it ended up off center but I went with it. Other curious things seem to be happening as well. I think I kind of like it.
|
Irene - that's putting your own stamp on the pattern and I kinda like it too.
|
Irene, I like it, too.
|
I like it too! Very cool and rustic looking.

There appeared to be heaps of folks interested in doing these blocks at the beginning who purchased PH's book.
There seems to be about 6 or 7 posting pics of blocks. Are you all out there quietly glueing, stitching and soaking? Or have I missed some posts and need to go back through the thread and pay better attention this time? |

Hi All, Well here are my 6" and 12" blocks for this week. I reworked the 12" block to make it better for me. I'll post those directions in the next post.

I made the horrible mistake of cutting through the top fabric while removing paper templates. To repair it, I clipped the zz stitching all around the damaged area. I trimmed out all of that piece of fabric, put a fresh piece behind the block, then sewed zz around that section. From the backside, of course, you can see my mess. From the front side, even I can't tell which diamond was replaced. sweet!

12" Rosellen's Cross: done my way. At the 12" size, it seemed silly to have all that wasted fabric from mulitple layers. I determined that a 10" circle would fit nicely on the 12.5" foundation. I drew that circle directly onto the foundation fabric.
Enlarge Template A to 200%. Measure 2.5" from the skinny end and cut it off. That 2.5" end is the new Template A. On a piece of paper, draw a 10" diameter circle. Draw lines through the circle to make it into 4 equal pie shapes. Mark those spots on the circle. Draw a straight line between 2 spots, making a 7" line. Cut out the whole circle. Now fold on the 7" line. Cut around the arc of the circle. You now have a 7" long football shape, which is your Template B. Place the fabric covered Template B's directly on the foundation fabric, aligning it up with the pre-drawn circle. Slide Template A's under the Template B's, bringing their tips to where they just touch. Be sure these are spaced equally in, so that your center square (which is foundation fabric showing through) is truly centered. If you want a different fabric in your center square, slide it under the Template A pieces before you zz them down. I hope this makes sense to you. If you have questions, be sure to ask. hugs, Jupiter |
Jupiter - both of your blocks came out beautifully! I love the little daisy peeking out of the middle on your big block. Great save on the cut! My heart would have stopped if I had done that. I don't know whether I would have been calm enough to fix it like that.
|
Jupiter - you coped with that little "Oops" like a hero. Great job.
Great blocks also. Blue is my favourite colour but I sure love that brown/green fabric. |
Jupiter, your blocks are fantastic. Great save on the yellow and blue block.

So far those of us that have posted pics are following quite different colour schemes/fabric choices and that makes it very interesting to see the variety in the completed blocks.
I would really love to see any others that are out there as well. |
You just have to remember that it is only a little piece of fabric. Deep sigh, then start taking out stitches! lol

Love seeing the different blocks. I have a huge wedding today with out of state and out of country guests. Most will be leaving tomorrow so I can have my sewing room back and my "serene routine" as my friends call my retirement life. ;-)
I have one done and have some thoughts on the next, so won't be long before I catch up. |
Can't wait to see your blocks Linda!
|
March 6th is our next "Catch Up" week. I think we should each post one photo that has all of our blocks together. THAT would be fun to see!

Hi Cuddly Quilter - I also started out behind as I was waiting for my fabric and book to come from the U.S. but once you get started it won't take long to catch up.
Jupiter's schedule includes catch up weeks which will be of help to you also. I am hand appliquing and find between cutting, glueing and stitching I can get a lot of this done of an evening while watching T.V. with DH. You can also familiarise yourself with the process and the block patterns as you have the book now so you are ready to go when your fabric arrives. I look forward to seeing pics of your fabrics when you receive them. P.S. Just love your avatar - it looks like an Aussie gecko to me. |

OK - Sunday is almost over and here's the SHOCKER.... I don't have my block done yet! I've got the pieces cut, but I've had other things on my plate this week, so I'll be stitching as the week goes on.
Just wanted to say hi, and wish you all a happy weekend - even though it's almost over... |
Just wanted to stop by and tell you all how awesome you are doing. Your blocks are all beautiful. I have my computer fixed now and will be able to post pictures again soon. I have to figure out how to use my new system....(may take a few days) not the brightest when it comes to these things.
Keep up the great work everyone. |
