Heads up... I just looked at the book on Amazon and it said only 2 in stock! I ordered one of them.
Wow, we can sure be a force to be reconned with, huh? |
What is everyone doing for fabric/colors. Are you doing all one color scheme to do a large quilt or a few of one color to do smaller projects, or just using scraps for practice blocks???

That sounds nice, I have never used batiks, but I love the look of them. I have no plans yet, better get moving.
|
I thought about batiks, but oohh there is so much to choose from, so I ended up with black with bright yellow, green, and teal accents for my blocks, will see how it turns out.
|
I;m doing batiks in pink, purple, black and green. I'll post pictures when I get my fabric organized.

Jenny Byer borders certainly would be a nice fabric to use. Welcome to join in if you'd like to.

I went through the pages and located some of our fabric choices.

I finally decided on my fabric. Batiks from Hancock's Of Puducah. All on sale. Now I need to really take a good look at the book and see what applique is all about. I'm looking forward to working with this group.

Found my fabric:)

Beautiful colors, I am also thinking about blue fabric.
|
I didn't have a plan but loved the light one when I saw it.
|
Just received my book a few days ago in the mail from Amazon. It looks a little overwhelming, I'm so glad I'm doing this with the support here. Now, if I could just make my mind up with the fabric selection!
|
Sometimes thats all it takes.... just finding that right fabric that speaks to your creative side. Then the rest of it can fall into place naturally! Good choices.... will be fun it watch it bloom.

Very nice fabric Ruth!

here are my fabrics. are they too dark?
|
Interesting. I don't think they are too dark. That said I haven't been able to play out the fabrics in my head with these blocks. It will be a mystery. 8-)
|
No not too dark, I love the zigzag, can't wait to see it used, especially if you miter it.
|
I think you have a nice selection. There are darks, mediums, and lights. You have good variety between lines, prints, and solids.
If you need help seeing the value (dark-med-lite) in your fabrics, print your photo out in black and white. You will instantly see which are dark, medium, and light. hugs, Jupiter

I've been playing in the fabric! I turned everyone's fabric to black and white. I think I may need to change some of my own fabrics..... my choices may be too muddy in the middle.
Anyway, here are the photos. Feel free to download them to your own computer if you want to print them out. They are jpg photos. hugs, Jupiter |
Thanks Jupiter - that is really cool!
I spend way too much money at connectingthreads.com, and they have a feature where if you add your fabrics to your "design table" you can look at them in black and white (among other things). It really helps to see the values. But - I didn't buy these fabrics there so it's nice to see them in B&W! Except now I want to rearrange my fabrics in the picture so that the lights are together... |

ok..I have the book, freezer paper sheets, glue stick, invisible thread...now to get the fabric...wow..that will be the hardest to decide
|
Thanks so much for the black/white pics! I see that I need to get a few more lights and maybe another dark. the pretty blue (my favorite) is on back order and so is the 2nd from the right on top. I need to go somewhere there is a design wall for sure.
I am studying page 11 and trying to understand why we copy to white paper then to freezer paper. Then I'm not sure which we are supposed to cut the "template" from, the copy or freezer paper? I think once I understand the steps, I'll be okay with the designing (at least I hope so). I'm looking forward to this after the Holiday hustle bustle. |
I'm hoping to join in with this project but as yet have not received my book or fabric, both of which I have ordered on-line from overseas. Didn't have the time to go out and search shops here because of my work schedule. I have obviously been caught up in the Christmas mail backlog so here's hoping I can get started with everyone and not have to play catchup.
I don't actually know anything about this technique but after watching the PH video thought it looked interesting enough to give it a try. |
I am glad you are joining us. The January schedule doesn't look too hard, so as long as your order gets to you by mid January, you should have plenty of time.
hugs, Jupiter

Hi Batikqltr and Everyone,
I've been looking at page 11 in the book, to see what you are seeing. I believe what she is having us do is to print the template drawing on white paper. Then iron the freezer paper to the back side of the white paper, so they are stuck together. Then cut them out as one piece. That makes the template a little bit thicker and stronger because it ends up being 2 thicknesses of paper. I bought several sheets of Dritz Clear Plastic Template. I printed the templates out on white paper. Now it is my intension to trace them onto the plastic sheet and cut the templates out of clear plastic. (Not right or wrong, just a different way to handle it... mostly because I didn't read the book first before I bought the template plastic! silly me...) Its getting close to Christmas. Another day or two of "finish up all presents," then clear up the mess in my studio. Between Christmas and New Years, I am dedicating that week to working on a batik quilt I am making. Then when January finally gets here, I should be all set to go on this new project. I still think I may need to get some lighter lights in my fabric selection. Mine are the last set of BW photos on page 10 on this site... the daisys. It is interesting how much a black and white photo can show you about value of fabric color... and how much we tend to go right down the happy middle and avoid the dark-dark and the light-light, both of which add a dynamic touch to a quilt. Good Night for now, Jupiter

I tried to get photos of the fabric selection used in the book. I found most of them, but was unsure about some. Then realized I could get the comparison I wanted to see by using the book cover.... So here it is in color and black and white. I wanted to compare with my own fabrics, how light is light, how dark is dark, and how much middle of the road medium I can get away with!
Then I moved our photos over here. You know we all want to look and compare our fabrics with Penny's. hugs, Jupiter |
