Pony Club Thread 3
Here is where we will continue our chat/sharing of blocks from the Pony Club and other FW books. Our previous thread, https://www.quiltingboard.com/blocks...ml#post8395253, got too big for our moderators to manage. So the previous thread will be closed and we will continue here.
Hope everyone finds us here and "subscribes" to this thread, just like the old ones. Thanks! Carry on! |
Post a hello when you find us!
Hi there everyone!!! I am here, love you guys!!!
Hello! Carrie from Iowa here. :) Glad I reconnected a couple weeks ago so I didn't miss that there was a new thread!! I have so enjoy getting to know you ladies over the years. Miss seeing some familiar names from the PC time...like Honchey, QuiltE and JanRN...anyone know what they are up to these days/if they are still on the boards?
For those who might have missed it in the other thread, here is the link for the new FW Medallion Quilt Along BOTW starting in July: https://www.quiltingboard.com/blocks...w-t311407.html |
! I'm so glad that we can still continue to talk here! Ya'll are such an important part of my life!
Carrie, I recognize all those names you mentioned. I believe I swapped with all of them. Honchey's last post looks like it was in mid March this year, but I think she also participates in a quilting group on Facebook? Anyway, a long time ago she invited me to join her on a Facebook group, but I don't do FB. QuiltE posted today. JanRN posted last week. Looks like you could send any of them a pm to catch up. :-)
Hello from Iowa...thanks SBG for the renewal notice.
Hi, Friends! Remember me? I still follow along and hope I'm still welcome. Love looking at all your projects--all beautiful and very inspiring. Peace!
Hi Jan, we've missed you!! So glad you've found your way back. Just jump in and chat, or work along on whatever FW quilt project you have unfinished. So good to see you posting again.
Thanks, SBG, for starting PC#3 for us to continue to chat together. Yes, I found it and hope to finish the 1930s top, its started on piecing it together, so its a 'maybe' in finishing up this summer. Meanwhile, to find the new thread and follow it.
Hello Jan! Good to "see" you again. :) I still look at our block swap quilts and think of each of you who participated.
So...I am working on cutting patterns for the new FW Medallion quilt and like to pre-measure for cutting my fabrics for the paper piecing. It has been so long since I have done this and I can't remember...when cutting HST, do you add 1/2" or is it more than that?? Ex...the finished triangle measures 3" on the 2 short sides....so do I cut the square 3 1/2" or is it 4"?? Thanks for any help. :) |
I believe you add 7/8" for cutting HSTs...
SBG--thanks! I don't know why I couldn't remember, then I tried looking it up and different websites said different things...still going on little sleep so my brain seems fuzzy most days. The last meds I was taking for migraines caused insomnia and even though I have been off them a couple weeks now it hasn't gone away! :(
Good to see a bunch of old folks...haha..show up!
I'm no help. I usually use scraps for paper piecing, and can't seem to get the hang of figuring out how to put the fabric upside down, inside out, mirror image, backwards, or whatever it is! :-o I've done so many mistakes with paper piecing, you wouldn't believe it! I add an inch on all sides to be safe, but can still goof up. The finished blocks are superb, though.

Here's a pic of the PC blocks I've made previously. I am looking forward to adding to them.
I had to look up how to do paper piecing online! After all the 1930's blocks, I had forgotten!
SBG--I remember a couple of those blocks! It's great that you are working on the PC blocks again! I need to pull out my 30s block but want to get my center done for the FW Medallion quilt first. RR round is done for the month, so that is next on my list.
It is so great to *want to* sew again!! Seems like the migraine meds are working...it is just one injection/month so hopefully it lasts all month long. |
Carrie, your RR round turned out great.
I take a monthly injection to control hives! |

I like the size of the block, it's not so small with 50 itsy-bitsy pieces like the FW30s blocks, and it's not the usual 12" size which seems so big after you do 6" patterns. It's just a comfortable size in the middle.
I love the 8.5" size too!
Jeanie, the book gives both templates for traditional piecing and also for pp. I would use the pp templates if I was doing pp... and look up a refresher online on how to pp. I wouldn't add anything to the regular templates. ...Unless I misunderstood your question! |

I have both the PPing and the templates printed for the center square. I have also pulled a lot of fabric. There are tons of video's on YouTube on PPing! Quite amazing! |
I just my book, and I am excited. Now to download the blocks and see if I can be successful there. I did subscribe to Pony3 and that thread is working. Maybe the new one will work too, nothing on it yet that has come through for me.

What I meant was can you enlarge the templates by a small amount and use them to cut out your fabric pieces for PPing?
I'm glad there are so many pp videos out there. I became quite adept at the process while making my 1930's blocks, and now I'm a rank beginner again. It's been a while! |

Ohhhhhh... what a smart idea! I have never thought of that or tried it. You can be our guinea pig and let us know how well it works.

I think I will try it and let you know. Maybe if I just do a small one, then expand if it does not work. I'm like you, have not done any PP since the FM 30's journey, and even then I preferred to just use the templates. These blocks look more complicated. |
PC or fwhmq, JeanieG? I thought the new latter one would be easy????Ha! No, I am not making all of them, some look really hard to do. If ist not going together right, I will skip it. Time will tell.
They look frightfully hard to me.
Reminds me of what she has designed in the the past. An improvement is the pp blocks match the piecing this time. She did not change to lettering or number them differently. Not all blocks have pp instructions or need to be pp. Now I am trying to understand what are 6" and what are 8" blocks.

I have been working on this all day it seems.
I printed out the templates and the layout for the templates a couple of days ago. They are labeled A - G (only 7 templates in the whole 16" block. I colored in the layout with the colors I am using. I then printed out the paper piecing layout and sheets on newsprint. I realized that I had to color the paper piecing layout also, as the numbering series does not jive with the regular piecing layout. Regular has letters A - G, Paper Piecing has A1, A2 etc. After I colored the PP layout in, I took the paper piecing newsprint sheets and put the color I am using in each box as well as the template number. I have attached a picture of a pp sheet showing this (if anyone is interested). I then decided to try using the templates for cutting the PP pieces, instead of just chunks of fabric like I had done in the past. I had cut the templates out including the 1/4" margin, I traced around the templates, and I eyeballed another 1/4" when cutting them out. That worked well, but are a little too big, I think. I'm going to cut it down some with the next piece I do. I have attached my first piece, it has all the colors I am using except a medium brown and light pink. The only good thing about this block is that it is the only one that is going to take us forever, all the others are 6" or 8". |
Well done, SBG. Lovely blocks, well balanced, just about perfect! Enjoyed seeing them and remembering doing them.
SBG--great blocks!! I am looking forward to getting back to working on my FW 30s blocks in the next couple of weeks.
Jeanie, It looks great! All those little calicos, it reminds me of the 70's. I think that carriem would like to see your pictures in her FWMedallion thread? :-) She was wondering how people were getting along. That's the FWM center, isn't it?
Whoo hoo, SBG, you rock. |
Jeanie--great start! I have the papers cut and colored and fabrics picked. Planning to cut fabrics this week and start sewing the center block. :) Still waiting on some of my yardage but I have plenty of FQs to get me started.
Since I found the 1/4" cut around the templates was too much, I changed that to 1/8". I just eyeball that amount. They are coming out real good,. Soooo, if you want to print the templates (only 7 in this big block), you can trace around them on the back of your fabric, then add about 1/8th inch when you cut them out, and you will have a great size for your pping. I think it will save a lot of fabric that is wasted the old way. Also I print my templates on cardstock. Both the cardstock and the newsprint that I use for the PP patterns have gone through several different printers that I have used. I buy the cardstock and newsprint in 8 1/2 X 11 ($4.41 a ream for newsprint) online at Blick https://www.dickblick.com/items/10204-1085/
Jeanie, Thanks for sharing your experiment. It sounds like a good way to waste less fabric, which is one of my complaints for pping--- although it doesn't matter so much if I waste some as I have plenty, plenty of fabric! It's just the 'waste not, want not' feeling I get that makes me want to conserve. So you trace on the back of the fabric? Does that mean the pattern piece is right side up, or wrong side up? Do you get the cardboard from Blick too? I think Blick is a great place to shop-- such a diversity of nice products there. It must not be thick cardboard if it goes through a printer?
When I PP I use freezer paper. I always print out each pattern twice & iron, the one I have chosen for the fabric pattern, on the back of the fabric. I buy FP that is in 8.5" X 11" sheets & can go through the printer.

The paper I use for the templates is called Card Stock. I found this at officesupply.com: Neenah Paper Exact Index Card Stock, Smooth, 110lb, 94 Bright, 8 1/2 x 11, White, 250 Sheets. This was $8.30, which looked like a great price compared to some I googled. I have had mine for years, same specifications as this one. |
