This is how all the laundry jugs I have ever had worked. I also will rinse it if needed while my top loader is filling.

I've been making mine a bunch of years with Zote soap (I saw the flakes but it said don't use in HE washers - but maybe mixed with the other ingredients it is okay) washing soda and borax. I don't add oxi clean to the mixture but add it to some washes. I don't add scent. I've been very happy with it. I use the food processor first to grate the Zote and then put the other blade in and whirl it around to make tiny beads. When I add the other ingredients and whirl it all turns into powdered laundry detergent. I usually make a double batch and only have to do it about 3 -4 times a year. Just the two of us. I wonder if the "harsh"'feeling had to do with the water. I'm about to make some dryer balls with aluminum foil and wool roving which is supposed to eliminate the need for softener although I never have to use softener. Just an experiment I guess.

With the new top loader, I have to toss the cup in the washer. I cannot rinse it as the washer won't start until the lid is locked.

wow, I will have to buy a new washer and dryer soon. so many things to think about. I stopped using fabric softener liquid in my old washer because after awhile it began to gunk up the cup on top of the agitator. Ick! got it cleaned and couldn't clip it back on successfully so i ordered a new cup and then it worked fine. but only use fabric sheets in dryer when i remember. When I am ready to purchase, I will be back in here reading!!

I now only use liquid detergent. Powdered detergent doesn't always dissolve and can cause problems clogging up drains, etc. Also can cause lots of problems if you have a septic tank.
Our lightly soiled clothing does not require a lot of detergent.

When you're done with the cup and after rinsing the cup just put it back on no messes.
When I had a top loader, I did that, too. But now in my new home, I have a front loader and can't do that.
