I have an antique vanity - the mirror is not glass like today - it has the black behind it.

If I use windex to clean it - it streaks and doesn't look clean. I've used viniger and newspaper and that seems to be the same effect.

Do you just have to polish them clean or is there a trick I'm missing?

this is what is going on, the silver on the back has gone bad, this happens with old mirrors, the only thing you can do is replace the mirror, we do that with a lot of antiques we buy, nothing else you can do if you want to use it.

If it's just not cleaning good (and the mirror itself or the backing is not to blame), try cleaning with dish soap and water, and dry with a dishtowel. Works for glasses!

You can have a mirror re-silvered if keeping it is worth it to you.

It is worth it to me to keep - how much does it goes to have it re-silvered?
