my biggest question is whether all of the window's based programs I cherish will work with Linux.

So did you just have to buy Zorin or did you buy Linux, too? We have some old PC laptops that have slowed to the point of being practically unusable, so this might be an interesting option...

Please don't pay for a Linux distribution! Find the home page of the version you're looking at and download their copy.
Ebay sellers should not be selling something that's available for free!

I've never used the distribution you're talking about, but here's their site:
http://zorin-os.com/free.html

I use Ubuntu on both desktops and servers, it's extremely friendly and it's got a great support forum and lots of bloggers out there write about it: http://www.ubuntu.com/

As to whether your Windows software will work on it, short answer is no but there are equivalent packages that are available often even as part of the CD you install the operating system from.

Longer answer is: Some may work if you want to play with some of the emulation software, or "Wine" and try to get your software running that way. It's not the easiest and it's not something I'd suggest someone just learning to use Linux do but if you have a computer and preferably Linux savvy friend/relation it might be doable.

What Linux definitely has going for it for the casual user is that installed correctly (Ubuntu does by default), it's very difficult to get your machine messed up by viruses or malware and other unfriendlies from the Internet.

My hubs has been a die hard linux fan for ever (as long as we have been
together and even longer). He has pretty much been able to get ALL of
the programs he uses to work on linux minus a few.

I have Win. 7 Ultimate on my pc laptop only for my 6D Embroidery. Otherwise I use my MacBook for everything else and I will not run Win. on it even though it is capable of doing so...
