Chiropractors and neurologists - valuable medical practioners

The hospital in my town has a residency program for osteopathic doctors and they DO teach them manipulation. I have spoken to some of the residents and they tell me that they don't plan to do much manipulation when they are in their own practice. Mostly because of the time it takes in relation to what insurance pays them to do it. Programs may be different in different parts of the country but here in Oklahoma they are still teaching it.
I believe Eastern medicine, Western medicine, alternative medicine, complementary medicine, chiropractic medicine, etc. all have their place. What is right for one may not be right for another. And what is right for one today, may not be right tomorrow or next year. I just try to keep an open mind. The biggest problem I see where I am is that being in a rural area we don't have the option to see different practitioners of alternative therapies. I have been reading about energy medicine and tried to find an energy medicine practitioner and couldn't even find one in the state of Oklahoma that was certified.
Interesting discussion. Thanks.

So if you find a good doc stick with them. I have a great family doc and a great neurologist.
Ask around people will tell you before you go what they think of a dr or recommend a good dr.

I smile as I read over the comments of everyone here. It is my belief , that whoever one chooses as their method of treatment is a personal one. Making assumptions or stating that one is better than another is one mans opinion verses anothers. Each professional has undergone extensive medical study and treat many, so in deciding who is better than the other is purely hypothetical, as each will have different opinions. What works is what matters most.
My best wishes for good health to each and everyone.

I have one more good point for Chiropractors to add. Have you ever seen a tiny baby with colic screaming in pain?? Not a pretty sight is it? I have seen first hand how a chiropractor took a screaming infant in her arms and had her quieted with a very minor manipulation using her thumbs only. I was surprised and pleased to see how quickly the treatment was and how it caused no discomfort to the baby. She only needed to go back 2 more times and she didn't have a recurrence of the colic.... say what you will, but I witnessed it and it just enforced my high regard for Chiropractors.
I have been going to them since I was 9 because of various injuries and work related problems. My chiro never uses hand manipulations on my neck, I have insisted on her using the ACTIVATOR (pogo like tool that someone else mentioned) and it works wonders. I have serious lung disease and cough so hard that I actually dislodge my ribs from my sternum and the activator works great to put them back where they belong without too much discomfort to me.

What it all comes down to is "Do you feel you can trust the individual specialist?" whatever field he or she was trained in.
If at all possible ask your friends who they know that has been to that individual and what their results were. Word of mouth is by far the best way to find out who the good ones are.
I don't care how impressive a person's creditenials (sp?) are, if they aren't effective at what they do, I don't want to waste my time.
Sometimes too there are people who may have less book learning, but more 'healing touch' who just have a knack for it...whatever the discipline.

Joanne, I agree with you about chiroprators. I have a wonderful one who is upfront if he cannot help me and will suggest that I see my GP. I go once a month (out of my pocket) for adjustments to stay flexible. He also gives me exercise for my back.
