This is probably not what you had in mind, but I remember years ago, my grandmother and her two daughters would save the empty thread spools and "dress them up" and put on the Christmas tree for decorations. Very easy to do. Take pretty scrap fabric and glue. Use the glue to attach fabric to spool. Gramma used a heavy thread as the hanger to attach the decorated spool on the tree. Now days, pipe cleaners would do just as good or better...

Try these Christmas ornaments. These were posted last Christmas and are just beautiful. They don't look hard to make. I think there are tutorials on them.
