I am sure someone out there will think this is funny so I hope you have a good laugh even though it will be at my expense.
I live in a sub division and 2 blocks away starts the propety of a farm. Every year since I have lived here someone shoots off beautiful fireworks on the farm property for the 4th of July. I could lay in the bed and have a ring side seat at the display. I was all ready for them tonight, just waiting for the sun to go down. The weather was beautiful and I turned off the AC and put a fan in the window. Within a few minutes the dogs in the yard next to mine were barking wildly, I didn't know why until.............I went into the bedroom and I was knocked over by you guessed it, the smell of skunk. The barking dogs must have frightened the skunk and it sprayed someplace in my yard. The fan was blowing into the house so the smell was completly through the bedroom. I turned the fan to blow out and shut the door. It has been hours now and the room still smells I can't sleep in it. Needless to say I missed the fireworks. However it is only Friday I am sure the will have them tomorrow and Sunday so I will get to see them then.

I am not laughing. We recently had a similar incident. We never did figure out where the skunk smell was coming from (we think our neighbor's visitor brought the smell onto our street on his car) but it was horrible. It took hours to get the smell out of the house.

Oh I won't laugh! I totally sympathize! We woke up one night to this terrible oily smell. We lived in the country then and our dog had gotten sprayed and was sleeping on the back porch. Our bedroom was on one side of the kitchen and the porch on the other side. I had a leather purse sitting on a chair in the kitchen and it absorbed that smell. Poor Checkers didn't know why we wouldn't let him in the porch for a week!! We doused him in tomato juice and it helped but not entirely!! Seemed to take forever for the smell to wear off. I had to throw the purse away.
I hope you can use some Febreeze or something that will help!! Baking soda in pans wouldn't hurt. Or charcoal. I have used charcoal in a freezer that really smelled bad. I put it in the freezer and shut the door and left it for a few days.

My dogs killed a skunk in our yard. Trust me, I know what you are saying. I'm sorry the stinky kitty ruined your evening.
Honestly though: If it weren't illegal to have a pet skunk in CA - I would have one. I love skunks (just not their badass smell)

I live in the country, and you never can be sure when one may appear and grace you with their "pre-scents". The smell will eventually fade, but just be glad it wasn't a direct hit on your dog, who then came in the house and laid on the carpet or couch, before you could stop them.
My Dad and his cousin used to trap for furs in the early 1920's, as kids. One morning, on the way to school, they had caught a skunk in a trap. It was a one room school, in the winter, and snow on the ground. They had to stay outside and the teacher passed their lessons out to them that day, and my Grandmother made Dad eat his dinner out on the porch, and then burned his clothes. Even tomato juice didn't get rid of the smell on them for days, as that is what we use to kill the odor on country dogs.

Oh, baby skunks make WONDERFUL pets! I had one years ago, whose name was Rosebud, and I bottle fed him until he was weaned. If they are de-scented, they are adorable charmers.

My vet told me this. A man let his labrador out and when he let the dog back in he thought it had been sprayed, but no, the skunk was IN the dog's mouth. The skunk sprayed right in the man's living room! I told the vet I would burn the house and deal with the insurance later.
Hubby caught one in a live trap in the barn a couple of years ago it smelled like a chemical factory exploded in there.
I soak the dogs in tomato juice for 15 minutes then rub baking soda in, let that sit awhile, wash with Dawn diswashing liquid. All of this works pretty good, but far from perfect.

Here's a way to get rid of the odor on your pet:
It's really not necessary to burn your clothes if they get "skunked," or sprayed with the horrific smelling chemicals a skunk uses as self-defense. If you have hydrogen peroxide, baking soda (not powder), and dish soap handy, you can mix up a bath that neutralizes the smell. An easy to remember recipe of one pint of hydrogen peroxide, one small box of baking soda, and a couple of squirts of any dish washing liquid mixed in a gallon of water makes an effective, scientifically based antidote. Those ingredients, in their separate packages, are easy to store in a plastic bucket with camping equipment or on the back porch to be handy when they're needed. The recipe must be mixed up and used quickly; it loses its effectiveness within about an hour, and it will explode if it's kept in a covered container. CAUTION: hydrogen peroxide can blind your pet if it gets into their eyes.
Apply a small strip of eye lubricant (such as Puralube) or 1-2 drops of mineral oil to your dog's eyes. This will help protect the eyes in case any of the solution splashes or drips in.
All these ingredients are safe to use around pets, animals or humans; the "explosive" effect when the mixed solution is covered comes from a release of oxygen. There is the possibility that it will bleach what it touches through oxidation, so it might turn a black dog brown or grey until the natural color of hair grows back out.
If the skunk's victim is a pet, work the solution into the coat thoroughly, let it sit about five minutes, then rinse it out. The skunk smell will be gone!
The solution also works as an effective rinse for clothing.
