My aluminum cake pan and cookie sheet have become discolored from washing them in my dishwasher. What can I do short of buying new ones, to bring the shine back?

If you want to keep new pans shinny, always use parchment paper to line them for baking and then all you have to do is rinse with hot water and dry the pans. I never run out of parchment paper, it's as essential to me as toilet paper!

Wash them by hand, the chemicals in the dishwasher degertant will discolor them too.

Use a little vinegar or lemon juice and rub them all over. The acid removes the oxidation and you'll get a shinny pan.

Put the whole pan in boiling water and cream of tartar.
Aluminum and dishwashers to not mix.

4/0 steel wool and elbow grease - lots of elbow grease may polish the metal. If it doesn't shine up like new that's OK as far as cooking. The pan will still bake brownies.
