There are several forms of the Magnolia and it looks like one. It is not a Gardenia. The leaves and seed pod all look like a single form of the Magnolia. Like misspriss said take it to a garden center and they can tell you what you have.

Camellias have leaves with slightly serrated edges.

These images were taken from a Magnolia Little Gem. Do they look like yours?

I Googled gardenia and magnolia, clicked on "images", and it really looks like a magnolia flower to me. Apparently magnolias come in bush form as well as tree form. Scroll down on this website to see:

No it is not a Little Gem Jan. I have one of those trees. These leaves are not as dark green and they are not the brown underneath. There is a garden shop down the street from where I am in Newport News Va. don't know why I did not think to go there.....DUH.......

That is a Gardenia. We have a lot of them in the south. If it smells really good, it is gardenia. If no smell I would say magnolia.
