My husband has always had a thing about tools. If he needs to borrow any scissors he knows what the need is for. I keep sewing scissors in the sewing room. Paper scissors are in the office. They are all labeled. he just went around and put tags on them. If they get misplaced for any reason, the tag states the use. Any hand embroidery projects always have the little shears in the Ziploc. He has sewn also and knows what can happen.

I didn't now why we guard our fabric scissors so zealously until I read the following response to that question by Marilyn vos Savant in Parade magazine. Here's her answer:
"Paper typically contains hard minerals that aren't found in fabric, so cutting even ordinary paper will dull blades more than cutting fabric. Wrapping paper is worse, and holiday wrap with all its foil and sparkly accents may be the most damaging of all. Fabric shears are quickly dulled by using them for household purposes, so hide those shears from the rest of the family! Cutting fabric (and hair, etc.) requires very sharp scissors because the fibers bend and slip away from the blades so easily."

about 30 years ago i got 4 wonderful pairs of scissors --- dressmakers, small embroidery, hair cutting, and kitchen shears. Get this .... i saved box tops from some cereal and then paid maybe 8 dollars. Not sure where the kitchen shears are but the sewing ones are hidden away with my sewing stuff and the hair cutting with the hair clippers. They've never been sharpened and they are still wonderful. I've read about the posts that the new ones aren't as good so I guard them more than ever.
