Hi, I consider myself a mental midget when it comes to computers and electronic devices; however, I have both a computer and a kindle. I want to download free ebooks (I have the Caliber program installed) but whenever I go to a website to get a free download, I am requested to either a) install a new program so I can download or b) give billing information. I am not comfortable doing either since I am not sure if the new installation will mess up my computer or if the billing information will mess up my bank account. Any help would be greatly appreciated.

I have a Kindle, (not the Fire, but the one with free Wi-Fi and 3 G---it has a tiny keyboard across the bottom), and whenever I "buy" a free book, it just downloads into the Kindle. I get a "Thank you for you purchase" message, both on the Kindle, and in an email on my computer. I don't know what the Caliber program is. Maybe you have the Kindle Fire (?). I know someone with a Fire who has the "Prime" program. Hope someone else can help you. Maybe you can phone customer support.

I have a Kindle Fire and get free books -You can got to Amazon and search for Free Kindle Books or I use bookbub.com - some cost, while others are free - they will download from your purchaser site (like Amazon) but the cost will be 0.00.

I think they all ask for billing information, maybe a credit card.

You can use your Kindle and your public library card to download lots of free books....Google it to find out how...

Go here: http://www.pixelofink.com/ sign up for email notice and get free books everyday. It's easy. No account needed but your Amazon sign up. It's the best sight to keep up with all the free books listed. Also the Amazon Kindle Lending Library you can borrow books that aren't free if you have Amazon Prime.

Ok, here is how to do it. I have the Kindle fire and get as many fee books as I can handle and not from amazon all the time. I use Guetemberg and some other place. If they are free, they will download to your download folder on your hard drive. Then you can open your Calibre and if the books are not a mobi file, calibre will convert them for you to ebup for ipad and mobi for kindle. Calibre will make a folder on your hard drive for the books it converts and all you have to do is hook up your kindle and transfer them to your documents in Kindle.

Now if they are asking you for information, I wouldn't download. Unless of course you are getting it from Amazon, that is ok. Amazon will treat it like a purchase and it will be zero on your account.

I have a Kindle Fire and get all my free books from bookblast. I get an email everyday for the free books of the day, if I want one of them I just click on the book and it takes me to Amazon and it then downloads to my kindle. I also get books from my library, can check them out for 21 days. I have never read so many books as I have the last 2 and half years.

Amazon downloads require your credit card info to be on file even for a free download. If you don't want your credit card on file, buy an Amazon gift card and put it on file. It does not charge you anything. I do that one daily.

Also check out Bookbub. It's a great free book site that I have not seen mentioned above.

I search on Barnes and Noble site for free ebooks for my Nook. Most of them are not particularly recent titles, but that isn't necessarily a bad thing.

Also Baen.com has a free library with a sampling of books by participating authors.

There are other sites as well but don't recall the names. I think you can probably just do a Google search for free ebooks.

Overdrive.com is through your local library. up to 10 books at a time. I do audio books for the most part, but you can get e books also. they come through amazon, but you don't pay anything, it is a library loan.
