There is a groundhog in Pennsylvania that predicts the weather. On Feb 2 he comes out of his den and if it is sunny he sees his shadow and gets frightened back into his hole for 6 more weeks. If it is cloudy he stays out and an early spring is to be had.

Not sure when or how it got started, but if a ground hog,(a big fat furry animal that burrows (do a Google for a picture)), see's his shadow early in the morning, we will have 6 more weeks of winter. Silly, I know.

We have Jimmy. He predicts an early spring. Last year the previous Jimmy tried to bite the mayor, so this year Jimmy had to do his predicting from his cage.

In 1887 in Punxsutawney, PA, the first Groundhog Day was celebrated.

Trevor Noah did a pretty funny bit on the Daily Show, about how weird it is that Americans use a rodent to predict the weather. He says in Africa (where he's from) they use this weird thing called "satellite data".

It doesn't sound funny when I typed it out, but I found it to be quite amusing the way he presented it.
