I do wool applique and primitive stitch is what I was told was like a "tacking" stitch which was used in tailoring of clothing. It is just a small stitch to hold the edges down not as visible as a buttonhole stitch.

I am pretty sure the blanket stitch would be considered 'primitive'. Like Sandygirl said..do the stitch that appeals to you! Also, you may want to check this site..I absolutely love it!
