Does anyone know what causes that to happen?

according to wikipedia FWIW - The white halo formed by condensed water droplets is thought to result from a drop in air pressure around the aircraft at transonic speeds

Actual photos of the sound barrier

This phenomenon only happens at the instant an

And it literally appears like the aircraft goes through a wall.

I hope you find these pictures as fascinating as I did.
Yes, I've seen this many times and everytime I do it brings a smile to my face. My DH is a Ret. Disabled Vet who served in the Air Force. Since we're an Air Force town, the kids when they were in elementary school put on a Tribute to the Military program saluting each of the military. They'd show this film of all the planes at the different bases and you would see this picture along with the sound.. totally awesome!! (I love planes too)
The kids would bring in pictures of their family members who were in the military and they'd be displayed on the walls on the gym (where the program was)
Makes me so very proud to be an American and be married to a Retired Vet.
(sorry, didn't mean to ramble, it's just so dear to my heart)
I feel the same way. When my hubby was flying A6's and EA6b's for the Navy up at Whidbey Island, we called it the sound of freedom. Of course, only visiting jets broke the sound barrier up there! The big horse-fly couldn't quite go that fast! But I loved hearing and seeing the jets go over.
