Default Hemming/Shortening Pants and/or Slacks

If the legs are tapered/narrowed towards the bottom and I need to shorten them - I like to pin them first to see if I need to open the inseam or outside seam so that there won't be a "gather/pucker" where the hem is stitched down.

When the legs are tapered, the part towards the foot is narrower than the part towards the waist - so I have to get some more fabric on the narrow part - so I "steal" it from the seam allowances.

I've never thought of that, thanks.

I'm 4'10" and have to shorten everything. I like using Nancy Siemens method of shortening jeans which keeps the bottom hem. It's only supposed to work on straight leg jeans, but I've tried it on tapered legs too.

If the top section has an 15 inch circumference, and the lower section has a 14 inch circumference, how do you make it work properly?

That is exactly what I do. In fact, just finished this with some friend's DH's pants. Because I sew I get everyone's tailoring for the 3 towns surrounding us, lol!

I've seen that technique before. I guess I'm in the minority in that I don't care if the original hem is there or not. I figure who is going to look at the hems of my jeans? And if they do and don't like them or judge me on them, its not my problem.
