Hand quilting can eat up more thread than you might think! Depends on how dense your quilting is and how large your quilt. If you were to put a tape measure to a line of quilting, then multiply that times how many times you made that line (easier with a grid or other straight line design), you'd be surprised. Plus, all the waste from tying off, etc.
