Default I know I'm a hand quilting novice but.....

Is it normal to use a whole spool, 400 yds of thread on the first half of a quilt?

Hand quilting can eat up more thread than you might think! Depends on how dense your quilting is and how large your quilt. If you were to put a tape measure to a line of quilting, then multiply that times how many times you made that line (easier with a grid or other straight line design), you'd be surprised. Plus, all the waste from tying off, etc.

I normally use 2 spools for a fair-size quilt.

.......... though you are doing Jane, and she has a LOT of stitching!

Plus, I know you well enough, that you are putting in a lot more stitches than many would ever think about.
Your Jane must be looking awesome ...................

Is it normal....? Yep.
Enjoy the process; can't wait to see the finished quilt.

I always buy more thread than I think I will ever use,so it will match. I work so slowly on hand quilting, I don't want any surprises.
