One thing I do is use a rotary cutter with a fancy blade so if you learn how to make the jackets you might want to cut the girls with a wave or scallop blade and the boys with a pinking blade or a regular straight edge. I use the decorative blade to cut the lines that will show and a straight edge to cut the lines that will be sewn together.
