Default layer cake pre-cut

How many 10" squares are in a layer cake package? Saw a pretty pre-cut pkg on MSQC and thought it only had 10 squares but thought there was usually more. Just wondering.

The Moda layer cake contains 40 squares, and the junior layer cake contains 20. Other manufacturers sometimes use the term "layer cake", sometimes with different contents.

You probably saw 10" Layer Cake in the title...of course the 10" refers to the size of the fabric square block. Most layer cakes have 40 squares.

Thank you for the info. I thought that a Layer Cake had more than 10 squares in it. lindaschipper-I looked and looked to see if the package had mentioned 10" squares but never did see the inches given. Anyway-thank you so much and I am not going crazy-that there are more than 10 squares in the pkg I saw. Just got back from 3 weeks (7500 miles) traveling across the country so I am a bit tired and things are registering completely!! I know that is no excuse but that is all I have!!

I love MSQC daily deals and I always look for layer cakes! Great deal to get at 40-50% off. Usually they are all 40 squares.

Most layer cakes contain 42 10" squares, whereas jelly rolls contain 40 strips.

I read that the layer cakes "generally have 42 but the actual number may vary." I wonder why Moda doesn't always make them 42? Seems a company should be consistent. I'm sure some fabrics cost them more, but obviously they're not losing money overall.

It depends on the line. Some seem to only have a few, some may have 2 or 4 of each different fabric, so you might have 40 squares but only 10 different prints. I've seen them with 52, 24, and 15.
Always best to check the details/ description to see exactly what you are getting. All of them I've seen in quilt shops tell you how many there are on the paper around them. Then I look to see if they are repeats.
If looking on line and you don't find the information in the description I would either call or email and ask.
one reason they are not consistent is because precuts are generally a ( sampling ) of a specific fabric line. There may be 15 different fabrics in the line, or 27; maybe only 7-10. Different lines have different varieties/ prints. Then when creating the precut collections the company decides what may sell best. If a collection only has a few fabrics they may decide to do 2,3,or 4 repeats to make a sellable collection. If it is a large line there may be only one or 2 of each fabric.

Be very careful when reading any package. A friend once bought a precut, it was a 2.5" roll, that said pattern included, what it didn't say was that it took two sets to make the quilt. She brought it to me figure out why she couldn't understand the pattern. She bought it because it was on sale and a bargain. She couldn't find another like it so it turned out to be a waste of money.

I buy from Missouri Star a lot. Layer cakes will tell you in the description how many are in each pack.
