You live in New York, you have a cold, you have a 64 degree house? Oh, my -- you need an airplane ticket to Dallas (where I live)! If I could snap my fingers and make it so, I'd transplant you to my guest room where you could recover at your leisure. Being sick AND cold is the pits. Double pits. Sending warm, warm get well wishes your way.

Being from the same neighborhood I definitely feel your pain!! 20 below zero at my house this morning, slightly warmer in Albany at a balmy -12 ha ha!

There are some nasty bugs going around. Several of my co-workers have been coughing, sniffling, sneezing, and out sick. Hope you feel better soon. I too am a huge baby when it comes to cold. I swear by Alka Seltzer Plus.

We just invested in a pellet stove for our house to help supplement the radiator heat. It is wonderful to cozy up to it when it is going. Try to stay warm and pile up under some quilts! Good time to take up hand quilting. It is nice to snuggle up under one while working at it but if you feel crappy you don't want to do anything, which may be best. I usually end up sleeping my colds off. I can sleep 20 hours when I have a bad one.

I'm so sorry. I am a bear when I don't feel good. It's even harder with a little one. Get all the rest you can and feel better soon.

You could put some vics vapor rub on your feet. The arches. No idea why that works when you are sick but it does. Always makes me feel better when I have a head cold.

Just a quick update

Went to the doc, no strep, no sinus infection, that's a good thing. I have been getting a lot of headaches the last couple weeks so I have to start keeping a headache journal and report back in a few weeks. She thinks they are cluster headaches/migraines...she also gave me a toradol shot in my arm to relieve the massive amounts of pressure between my eyes and showed me some pressure point to push on to help relieve the pain. My headaches were not that bad, but do accure often, so if I do keep getting them she'll order come scans of my sinus's to see what's up.

So thought I would just throw that update out there...also she told me no more cold meds cause of my high blood pressure (which I'm on meds for) so I have nothing to take for the cold now...I must suffer with blocked nasal passages now...

Electric blankets are really wonderful to have in the cold of winter! I couldn't live in a place where my heating system couldn't heat the house above 64! I would have shivered to death the first winter.

Feel better soon.

As counter-intuitive as it sounds, I have read that cold meds and tylenol/ibuprophen make a cold last longer. The reason is that the tylenol/ibuprophen reduce fever, and the higher fever kills the virus, thus shortens a cold. Of course, that info has to be tempered with common sense - a fever of 104+ degrees merits a trip to the dr.

Some hints that I found in "First" magazine that might help:

- Peppermint tea - the scent reduces congestion in 10 minutes and is supposed to reduce headache pain as well as tylenol

- a 20 minute soak in a hot bath triggers a spike in body temperature. A higher body temp will kill heat sensitive virus in your body.

- my personal favorite - tame a cough with a 1 oz serving of dark chocolate. It's supposed to suppress coughing 33 % better than codeine! It has something called theobromine, a plant compound that soothes the cough triggering vagus nerve.

Hope this helps!
