Default Need advice re: repair

Has anyone done this type of repair? My husband has 2 pairs of pants that have this issue. The little metal bar that the hook slides into has either broken or fallen off. There is nothing else wrong with the pants, so I'd like to repair them, hopefully in a way that looks nice so he won't refuse to wear them.

Yes, unfortunately it has happened to me. You can take a piece of bias tape, fold and sew layers so it is strong and thinner, and zigzag the ends on top and bottom of torn section (I would also zigzag or something to the place where it was, to reinforce area). Just make sure the metal piece hooks over it, don't make it too thick. Hope I described it well enough to visualize. You could also crochet a piece with strong string, but it might not work for men's pants. Good luck!

Pants are to small! You can get repair kits at the fabric shops. You need to reinforce the outside. You could take the remaining hook off and put a button hole and button on, or Velcro on.

I had to deal with this same repair several times (on different pants ) I tucked a small square of fusible stabilizer and a small square of double sided fusible web into the hole, tucking in all the edges & clipping off all the frayed bits. Then I ironed it down & sewed on a new bar. Because the bar is hidden when the pants are closed, it looked alright, & it held together pretty well through washing & wearing. It might hold even better if you added a line of stitching across or around your little patch - keeping your stitches inside the area covered by the flap on the hook side.

Repair the hole and look for the little metal bars available to hand sew on. They look like a little flat straight piece with 2 holes at each end (if they still make them?) You might find them on the sewing store shelf with the metal snaps and other fasteners.
