I was checking my son Jacob's social studies homework and found out there is another ocean-instead of the 4 I learned about in school now there's 5-the Southern Ocean. How do you just create another ocean?!

Here's a site of them all and a few facts.

(You're missing the Artic from the list.)

I think it's a plot to force the schools to buy new books--LOL! BTW--Wouldn't it make more sense to name their new ocean Antarctic Ocean or change the name of the Arctic Ocean to Northern Ocean? Obviously this society needs more work to do if they have to add another ocean and then give it a name that doesn't really relate to any of the others. Maybe that's what their next big announcement will be.

I learned about Artic, Indian, Atlantic, and Pacific oceans. The Southern Ocean is news to me-I'm a little slow on the uptake apparently-I googled it and it was named in 2000.

Well if they can take away a whole planet (Pluto) they can give us another ocean. :P

That is a sea. Used to be seven seas but when I googled it there are a lot more. Red Sea, Baltic sea, Carribean, Sea of Japan and a bunch more.

Wait until he goes to college. Each professor requires class to use the text book written by GUESS WHO? The teaching professor, cost is out outrageous.

The Mediterranean is a Sea. I homeschool and none of my maps list the Southern Ocean. They were all bought after 2000 so it should have been on it. So far, none of the books we have used mention it either. (I buy new yearly & they are supposed to be the most up-to-date printed.) I learned about it on the internet.

    Huh. I didn't know that I didn't know that.
Might have been happier in my ignorance, too; not so happy when new things get by me - makes me feel OLD!
