A while back I saw a news item that said there's a new syndrome going around called "computer lap" or some such thing. So many people put the laptop in their lap (duh!), that the doctors are seeing more and more people with roughened skin on their upper legs from the heat.

You should not have your laptop directly on your lap, especially in summer. Your computer cannot cool itself it you block the vents on the bottom & the computer will overheat. I have a tray that my laptop sits in perfectly with about 1 1/2" estra on the side that can hold a pen/pencil.

They have pads specifically for lap tops. Look in Office Depot, Staples, Target, WallyWorld, RadioShack...anywhere they sell lap tops. Best Buy, KMart, etc.

Laptops have to have airflow. The best thing I've found to sit mine on (in the lab, at a desk, etc.) is a baker's cooling rack that sits on top of something else. If I'm sitting at the couch, I usually just have it sitting on a large cookie sheet because I'm not that terribly inventive. It isn't pretty but I never really care about that kind of stuff if it works.

I have a Swissgear from Wenger. It has two small fans and connects to the computer for power. It keeps the computer cool. There are some other just like it around $17.00. We found ours at a big franchise computer store. But if you suffer from hot flashes, these fans on your laptop will not cool you down :)

I would be careful of lap use as some machine can over heat. That's why they sell the underlaptop fan unitis.

You need to rest the laptop on something other than fabric - reason is, the heat coming from it has to dissipate, and fabric will prevent that.

It is possible to purchase computer pad with a fan to keep your computer from overheating. They are just great
