Funny what little kids hear. I had been telling her the Jack and the Beanstalk story. Then I heard her telling it to her toy dog. Her words were "Fi Fi Fo THUMB,I smell the BUTT of an Englishman". That nearly did me in...Kids are a hoot!
She also says "Valerina" "beefs" for beets...and "Alum and the Chipmonks" lol!

That is so funny. My son called wash cloths top-tops. I never could figure out how he came up with that.

SueDor 02-13-2011 07:43 AM

My son used to say "mumpkin pie".

Riversong 02-13-2011 07:46 AM

When my 18 yr old son was 4, he came home from tot lot where he he had learned Row Row Row your Boat. As we drove home he was so proud of what he he had learned he just had to sing it to me. He sings it spot on perfect until he got to the Merrily, Merrily, Merrily part. He sang, Merrily Merrily Merrily, life is down the street.

clem55 02-13-2011 08:17 AM

My daughter would say yesternight instead of last night, no matter how much I tried to change it, and one son always said peanuts instead of penis. Little ones say the cutest words, and I bet we are going to hear a bunch with this post. Looking forward to what others share.

And, I'm sure you are so thankful that it wasn't the other way around.
I do love to hear the things that kids say.
I have a friend that told me her little girl asked 'do werewolves live in ware houses"? She answered 'no'. Syd then said 'what are warehouses for then'?

Baby girl, now a pediatrician, used to say:
whoa-whoas for her slippers
la-la for water from the faucet
powwie for her pillow.
It was when she started calling individually wrapped bubblegum, "Cut down bubble gum" that we were really confused. It took years but she finally told us, "You know, Mom, we always bought it in the little roadside store where they were doing the road work and had cut down all those trees." LOL!! :D

Older daughter, now a teacher, used to go with us in Daddy's O-cedes (mercedes) to buy O-fries (french fries). Never have figured that one out. :?

Once my sis was driving on the interstate and said "I wish that guy would get off my tail".
Her son exclaimed "Mommy, I didn't know you had a tail!!! "
I could write pages of the things my boys said. They are etched in my memory :)

My daughter said "lasterday" instead of yesterday! At Halloween time, Sam's Club had a mummy statue thing that had eyes that glowed and it moaned. Heather wanted to go to "Sam's Glove to see the dummy" We still crack up over that one.

You should write them. My 15 yr old still likes to take trips down memory lane with us and hear all the silly things he did or funny words he said.

goldsberry921 02-13-2011 11:28 AM

My eldest granddaughter would say 'bosquito" instead of mosquito.

The youngest would say piggy chips for pork rinds.

Jo M 02-13-2011 11:40 AM

Aren't they cute? My son called bulldozers, "bull-overs" and my daughter was trying to tell us that she was a grown up, called herself a "grown-duck." Needless to say, we still use those little "pearls" in the family. :)

That's a great idea!!! They are in my head but when I'm gone the kids won't know them!
Thanks hon!! :D

tutt 02-13-2011 12:30 PM

Instead of "leave me alone" my youngest son would save "leave me aclone". He stills gets teased about that one.

wolfkitty 02-13-2011 12:45 PM

I have a book of the stuff my son would say when he was little because I didn't want to forget them. He would say gomasses (molasses), nemons and nunch (lemons and lunch), commacated (complicated) and all fisked upt (all fixed up). This is a great post!

Marion Jean 02-13-2011 01:27 PM

My brother, who is 9 years younger than I am, used to call leotards "legaturds" - I always remembered that one.

anicra 02-14-2011 04:18 AM

These little kids are so great. Our 4 year old granddaughter has a beanie baby that she insists is a baby coyote. Makes us laugh every time she brings "Baby Cy" out to play.

obie2 02-14-2011 04:24 AM

Oh! I haven't thought of this in a long time. When my daughter was about 2 yro, we were playing together and she passed gas. I looked at her and asked, "where are your manners". She took me completely by surprise and responded, "I ate 'em". I couldn't hold back, I burst out laughing. Somehow she had bananas in mind.

Yooper32 02-14-2011 04:45 AM

My middle daughter had an even crazier word for "oatmeal". She always called it "op-ee-moy-lee-owe", and no amount of coaching could change her mind. We always wondered why she could take a simple word and make it so complicated.

Karyn 02-14-2011 04:56 AM

A friends son used to call a refrigerator a fritterfrater, and he called fish- phish. Sometimes we use those words today just for a laugh.

smagruder 02-14-2011 05:22 AM

la la for pillow, kee kee for blanket, lalow for yellow, wips for lips, wuv for love, so many more, I can't think of them right now as that was 30 years ago and more. My grandkids are not talking yet but I am sure they will come up with some duzzies.

My son called them bullnozers and the dental hygenist the hygentilest. She was, indeed, very gentle with the kids.

mythreesuns 02-14-2011 05:58 AM

I also love to listen to little kids and how they talk. They are also the most honest people around also. They sometimes can sure make a parents face as red as can be. We had a baby that did not digest his food (because of serious health issues) and he was always gasy and had liquid stools all the time. Sometimes he would have what my husband called a "liquid fart". So our older two sons grew up hearing this all the time. One time we are in the doctors office and a elderly man passed gas, and our oldest son (4 at the time) goes up to him and asked him if he just had a liquid fart? This same child, at age 3... came with me to the airport to drop my mother and her sister off for a trip to California, and we stayed to watch their plane take off and when he saw that he was so excited. It was dead silence in the airport restaurant (very small airport in WI), and it was us and 5 other people... my son at the top of his lungs..hollers out... HOLY BALLS.. 4 of the people laughed until they had tears..one very proper English woman, was totally shocked.

My grandangel would always say "the last day" instead of yesterday and would ask for a bed-night story!

cdobbert40 02-14-2011 08:27 AM

My brother always called a quarter a corner. My son could not say his tr's they were always f's, not a concern until we were at the parade with his great grandmother and all the fire trucks went by. My daughter had problems with l's and said y's instead, so you had cold yips and wore yipstick. My Stepson called ceiling fans, fannywoo, my granddaughter called hotdogs hot ducks, and I have a nephew who called the vacuum cleaner a trac treaner. All words that have lovingly been incorporated into our everyday lives. Except for Michaels fire trucks. Oh yeah and lasanga (sp) is called fusnana.

pad's 02-14-2011 09:03 AM

I have 8 year younger twin brothers, were preemies & identical. they had their own lingo for the first 3-4 years, some of it we never did decipher, but they knew what each was saying....yi-yol..(yellow)for banana....when looking for his brother it was always .. patting chest saying "two-two" .. I know there were years of their lingo but by the time we learned some of it they were speaking grown-up....but these were the ones that always stayed with me. Hard to realize those itty-bitty babies will be 59 this year.

puck116 02-14-2011 09:12 AM

How cute. DS "nonie" for macaroni. DD "gita" for airplane; "Rufie" for Ruthie (her grandmother). I'm sure there were others, they're all grown up now.

hamberger was ham-bigger. Drawer was jor. Shredded Wheat was fwed. We still call it fwed--20 years later.

Diannia 02-14-2011 11:03 AM

Here's a few for ya:

1. When DS#1 was little (about 3 or 4) he told me he wanted to go into the backyard to see the "queer" again. My DSIL's X was in the backyard and I was mortified to think he was calling the guy that name. I asked him to repeat what he said and he said, "The queer...you know up on the wire". He'd seen a SQUIRREL and got the name mixes up.

2. We call our 3 yr old granddaughter "Scooter" sometimes cuz she scooted when she was a baby. We were teasing her one afternoon and her older sister (5 yrs old) wanted to get in on the teasing but couldn't remember "Scooter" so she called her...ready for it???..."Skateboard"...too funny.

3. The 3 yr old loves copying the 5 yr old. Sends the 5 yr old through the roof! She's always yelling...Nana! Mia is coffeeing me!!! I've tried and tried to get that one corrected but she just doesn't seem to hear the difference yet.

4. Other 5 yr old granddaughter came into our life last year when oldest DS got engaged. My name is Diannia (pronounced Diana) and the kids call me Nana...well DGD calls me Nana Fadana. She can say Nana and Diannia seperately but not together. Too cute to correct on that one!

5. One last one for ya...my DB called 7-up Whiskey Pop cuz my dad taught it to him when he was really little. Embarrassed my mom to death when he yelled it out "Mom I want me some Whiskey pop" at the store 1 day. She gave my dad a big chewing out that night!

Diannia

Diannia 02-14-2011 11:04 AM

Ok I lied here's the last one...really!

5 yr old granddaughter says it's night night time (for bedtime) and wakeup night night time (for morning).
